N.C.: College students protest illegal immigrant ban
College students protest illegal immigrant ban
More than 350 across N.C. rally against bill to block undocumented residents from college.

About 40 UNC Charlotte students gathered at the Belk Tower on campus Tuesday to protest a state bill that would prohibit illegal immigrants from attending community colleges.
They called for support of a federal bill that would allow undocumented students to earn citizenship after going to college or serving in the military.
They joined more than 350 students from N.C. State, UNC Asheville, UNC Chapel Hill and North Carolina A&T State University who participated in demonstrations organized by the Coalition for College Access, a student group formed in Chapel Hill.

Since the Charlotte Observer is owned by The McClatchy Co. of Sacramento, Calif., which also owns The Raleigh News & Observer, I'm not surprised to see this passed off as news. They joined more than 350 students from N.C. 04-01-2009, 11:29 AM #4There we go with wanting or demanding more! by the way, what an excuse for dropping out of schools. And that is exactly what it is,an excuse. Actually even if they go to college it is still against the law to hire them if they are illegals!Maritza Garcia, 19, said she knows students who dropped out of school because they didn't see a future if they couldn't go to college. She wants the federal government to put an end to the debate by passing the Dream Act, which would allow undocumented immigrants a chance to earn citizenship after going to college.

Just a question? Where do they get funds for college when they just pick fruits and vege's for us? And may I add driving these big gas guzzling SUV's (Cdillac Escalades) and trucks? Maybe from loans from Bank of America? Maybe we should all go to Mexico and see if we get those same priveleges because that would be more then some Americans have right here and now!

hi anti-immigrant folks!
I don't have the honor of visiting this website much... you know, life priorities, like avoiding hateful commentary I've heard a million times.
I'd be happy to give a more qualified student my spot and funding. That's kind of the entire point of a competitive admissions process. So the only thing I can conclude is that you all are afraid that undocumented kids are the most intelligent in NC and will overrun our public universities. If that's the case, you all should probably pool all your wealth and invest in researching the intelligence gene to combat the entrance of a population of geniuses into our society. If these kids are as smart as you think, you might be better off letting them become educated, allowing them to find this intelligence gene for you, and then stealing it from them. (I know, I know, you all would never steal, since that's what undocumented immigrants do ... oh wait, a UC Irvine study showed that all immigrant populations have LOWER crime rates than native-born Americans --- look it up.) OH NO these immigrants are not only more intelligent, they are also better, less criminally inclined people who cross an extremely dangerous border and deal with psychos who will go unnamed to provide for their families!!!!!!!!!! IMPLOSION OF THE UNIVERSE!!!!
However, the reality is that more educated kids --> expanding economy --> better tax base --> more funding for education. So little Johnny whose main talent appears to be ranting against immigrants as good ol' mom/dad taught him DOES have a chance at getting into college, despite the genius undocumented kids who would otherwise fill all the UNC system seats.
So RELAX
Now maybe you can continue on with your life instead of wasting your time freaking out over an imaginary threat. (Yes, I realize I'm being optimistic.)
MW: While I agree 350 isn't huge, ALIPAC (which is state-wide) has had MUCH smaller protests: http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/1113058.html ---- I'm pretty sure you wouldn't argue that YOUR event was undeserving of press attention....
And for the record, most college students work --> pay taxes (including myself). As someone who now has a full time job, I am just as much a taxpayer as you all. So please stop with the lame "you'll understand when you pay taxes" argument. It really just gives me another reason to wonder what parallel reality you inhabit.
Now, I'm just wondering how long it will take before I get banned from this lovely website. Don't worry, I understand. What WOULD you all discuss if legitimate studies were discussed instead of, say, the upbringing of the girl who was quoted by the N&O. Jesus, the threatening newcomers abound.

Re: hi anti-immigrant folks!
These are not "immigrants" you speak of. They are illegal invaders who have no right to be in this country. I suppose you will be crying that your beloved illegals deserve the right to work in this country once they earn that college degree.

If you want to give up your spot to someone who shouldn't be here then that's your business. But don't expect the rest of America to share your misguided enthusiam.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
