Off-grid cooking: Prepare for the next blackout by practicing how to cook without power

    08/25/2025 // Evangelyn Rodriguez // 200 Views

Tags: Collapse, disaster, electricity, Gear, homesteading, off grid, off grid cooking, power, power grid, preparedness, prepper, prepping, SHTF, survival, survival gear, survival skills, tips

    • Power outages from storms, cyberattacks or grid failures can leave families unable to cook, boil water or maintain basic comforts. A diversified off-grid cooking strategy is essential.
    • Many preppers hoard gear but never use it, rendering tools useless in emergencies. Hands-on training builds muscle memory and troubleshooting skills.
    • The four core off-grid cooking methods you should master include solar ovens, rocket stoves, electric appliances and traditional fuels. Redundancy ensures backup options if one fails.
    • Safety is non-negotiable — carbon monoxide poisoning (from indoor flames), fire hazards and improper fuel storage can turn cooking into a deadly risk. Never leave open flames unattended.
    • Seasoned preppers urge weekly practice to make alternatives second nature. Master at least two unrelated methods for resilience.

Preppers, homesteaders and even urban families are increasingly recognizing that reliance on the electrical grid is a vulnerability. Power outages from storms, cyberattacks or grid failures can leave households without a way to prepare meals, boil water and maintain basic comforts. The answer? A diversified approach to off-grid cooking — one that doesn't depend on a single fuel source or method.
Why practice matters more than stockpiling

Many preparedness enthusiasts admit to a common mistake: hoarding gear without ever using it. Preppers typically want to have every new survival gadget but fail to recognize the importance of learning how to use them. Without mastery of these tools, they are rendered useless when disaster strikes. (Related: Health Ranger Report: Marjory Wildcraft explains why off-grid survival skills are important.)
The solution is hands-on practice. Families who regularly test their off-grid cooking methods — whether through backyard campouts, weekly "no-power nights" or emergency drills — develop muscle memory and learn to troubleshoot issues before they become critical. A solar oven that works perfectly in July may need adjustments in winter. A rocket stove that burns efficiently with dry twigs might sputter with damp wood. Without prior experience, these challenges can turn a manageable situation into a frustration—or worse, a safety hazard.
Four-step plan for reliable off-grid cooking

Experts recommend a layered approach, ensuring redundancy in case one method fails. (h/t to TheSurvivalMom.com)
    Fuel-free cooking: The solar oven

A solar oven requires only sunlight — no propane, wood or electricity. Some models can reach temperatures of 350 F or higher, sufficient for baking, roasting and slow-cooking. Even in partially shaded areas, repositioning the oven (such as on a patio roof or driveway) can maximize exposure.

    • Best for: Slow-cooked meals, baking and dehydrating
    • Limitations: Requires sunlight; ineffective in prolonged overcast conditions or at night

Ultra-efficient fuel use: The rocket stove

Rocket stoves burn small sticks, pinecones or other biomass with remarkable efficiency. A handful of twigs can boil water in minutes. DIY versions can be made from metal cans, while commercial models offer durability.

    • Best for: Quick boiling, frying or heating small meals
    • Limitations: Primarily outdoor use (indoor use requires ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide buildup)

Indoor safe cooking: Electric appliances and power stations

For people with a generator, solar power station or vehicle inverter, small electric appliances like a portable slow cooker or an electric skillet can be lifesavers. These devices allow indoor cooking without open flames.

    • Best for: Heating leftovers, cooking rice or simmering soups
    • Limitations: Requires a power source; battery drain must be managed

Traditional fuel backups: Propane, charcoal and wood

Dual-fuel models can run on gasoline, while charcoal grills or fire pits (with a grill grate) offer versatility for grilling and Dutch oven cooking. (Related: Survival cooking basics: Essential gear and fuel for every scenario.)

    • Best for: Grilling, boiling large pots or baking with a Dutch oven
    • Limitations: Fuel storage (propane, charcoal or firewood) must be maintained; outdoor use is safest

    Additional methods for versatility

Beyond the core four mentioned above, other off-grid cooking options include:

    • Butane stoves - compact and efficient, but requires butane canisters
    • Kelly kettles - boils water rapidly using twigs; doubles as a heater
    • HERC ovens - uses tea lights for slow cooking or keeping food warm
    • Dutch ovens over a campfire - ideal for baking bread or stews
    • Wonder ovens (hot boxes) - retains heat to cook food slowly without additional fuel

    Critical tools and safety considerations

No off-grid cooking setup is complete without:

    • Manual kitchen tools - Hand-crank can openers, grain mills and mortar-and-pestle sets
    • Fire safety gear - Fire extinguishers, fire blankets and carbon monoxide detectors (essential for indoor cooking)
    • Lighting - Solar lanterns or battery-powered LEDs for cooking after dark
    • Fuel storage - Properly stored propane, charcoal or firewood in dry, ventilated areas

Safety warning: Using open flames indoors pose serious risks. Even small stoves should be used near a vented window and never left unattended. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a silent killer — symptoms (dizziness, nausea) can be mistaken for flu before it's too late.
Spring and summer are ideal seasons for testing off-grid cooking methods. Pick one night a week to cook entirely off-grid. Try a new recipe in your solar oven, and teach your kids how to use a rocket stove.
The goal isn't just survival — it's normalizing off-grid cooking so that when the power grid fails, the transition is seamless. Families who treat these methods as part of regular life rather than emergency-only tools build confidence and resilience.
At minimum, experts suggest learning two unrelated off-grid cooking methods, such as how to use a solar oven (no fuel) and a propane stove (fuel-dependent). But the more redundancy, the better.
The next major blackout isn't a question of if, but when. For people who've already mastered off-grid cooking, it will just simply be an inconvenience. But for those who haven't, it could mean cold meals, wasted food—or worse.
The message from seasoned preppers is clear: Stop stockpiling. Start practicing. The time to learn is now — before the lights go out.

Sub 4lb 9mm Takedown Carbine under $1k? TNW Delivers — SHOT Show 2023

    in SHOT Show 2023
Published On: January 19, 2023 Updated: January 19, 2023 BY Levi Sim

TNW Firearm’s new Aero Survival Rifle LTE weighs less than 4 lbs and takes down.
We’ve seen TNW’s Aero Survival Rifle in a few different iterations over the last few years. But the LTE is a significant change from its beefier big brother. The LTE weighs in under 4 lbs.

Like the originals, the LTE’s barrel completely detaches for easy carry in a backpack, or probably the console of your truck. TNW uses a patented design to lock the barrel back in place.
SEE ALSO: GunsAmerica’s 12 Days of SHOT Giveaway — $50K in Guns & Gear!

There is a long distance between where the barrel meets the chamber (with a keyed connection) and where the barrel nut locks onto the receiver which reduces any room for wiggle. Coupled with their cone-shaped coupler, they say this gun holds zero with an optic.
This patented barrel mount helps the rifle keep zero even after takedown.
The ejection port can be set to either side of the gun.
The direct blowback action has a reciprocating charging handle that can be mounted for right- or left-handed operation. The safety can also be set to either side.
Most interestingly, the ejection port can also be set to eject from either side.
The LTE takes Glock mags and AR grips and stocks.
Ports on both sides, the vented top Picatinny rail, the m-Lok slots (at 3, 6, 9), and the pencil-profile (threaded) barrel all make this gun a lot lighter than the originals. Oh, and it takes Glock mags.
    M-Lok slots at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock.
The LTE has a FAL-style trigger with just three parts that also weighs in at about 4 lbs. The steel parts are parkerized, while the aluminum receivers are hard anodized. It comes with a Mission First Tactical stock and Kriss grip but is compatible with any AR stock and grips.
TNW’s new Aero Survival Rifle LTE will be available this summer for $899.
