THE CANADA EFFECT: Ron Paul Does 135% Better In Northern Border States

    Jordan Teicher|Feb. 13, 2012, 12:41 PM

Ron Paul may be a southern politician, but he performs best in the north. Anywhere near Canada to be exact.

Smart Politics' Eric Ostermeier reports that of the 61 Republican state primaries and caucuses conducted during the 2008 and 2012 presidential election cycles, Paul received a 135 percent higher vote percentage in the 13 states bordering Canada than the rest of the country.

His national vote average was 7.2 percent, while his vote average of the 18 northern border contests was 16.9 percent.
So why does Paul do so well near Canada?

    Ostermeier offers this humorous explanation:

Perhaps the rugged, independent, and often geographically isolated electorate in many of these northern border states finds kinship with a candidate who often finds himself alone in the wilderness in his own party.

Paul, in other words, has the lone wolf vote. His nomination, it seems, is now all but certain.

Ron Paul Is Secretly Taking Over The GOP — And It's Driving People Insane

    Grace Wyler|Feb. 15, 2012, 4:55 PM

By now, it is clear that the Maine caucuses were a complete mess.
Evidence is mounting that Mitt Romney's 194-vote victory over Ron Paul was prematurely announced, if not totally wrong. Washington County canceled their caucus on Saturday on account of three inches of snow (hardly a blizzard by Maine standards), and other towns that scheduled their caucuses for this week have been left out of the vote count. Now, it looks like caucuses that did take place before Feb. 11 have also been left out of final tally.

As the full extent of the chaos unfolds, sources close to the Paul campaign tell Business Insider that it is looking increasingly like Romney's team might have a hand in denying Paul votes, noting that Romney has some admirably ruthless operatives on his side and a powerful incentive to avoid a fifth caucus loss this month.

According to the Paul campaign, the Maine Republican Party is severely under-reporting Paul's results — and Romney isn't getting the same treatment. For example, nearly all the towns in Waldo County — a Ron Paul stronghold – held their caucuses on Feb. 4, but the state GOP reported no results for those towns. In Waterville, a college town in Central Maine, results were reported but not included in the party vote count. Paul beat Romney 21-5 there, according to the Kennebec County GOP.

"It's too common," senior advisor Doug Wead told Business Insider. "If it was chaos, we would expect strong Romney counties to be unreported, and that's not what's happening."

The Maine Republican Party won't decide which votes it will count until the executive committee meets next month. But Wead points out that even if Mitt Romney holds on to his slim lead, it will be a Pyrrhic victory.

"He will have disenfranchised all of these people," Wead said. "It could be a costly victory — it is a mistake."

The (alleged) bias against Paul may also be the product of an organic opposition to the libertarian Congressman and his army of ardent fans. Paul volunteers tend to be young and relatively new to party politics, and their presence has many state GOP stalwarts feeling territorial.

"People feel threatened — they don't want to see a bunch of kids who may have voted for Barack Obama take over," Wead said. "They feel a sense of ownership over the party — but there has to be an accommodation."

But state party machinations are already starting to backfire. The Paul campaign believes it has won the majority of Maine's delegates — and the perceived election fraud has galvanized Paul supporters to demand their votes be counted in the state's straw poll 'beauty contest.'

Caucus chaos has also proved to be fertile ground for Paul's quiet takeover of the Republican Party. Since 2008, the campaign and Paul's Campaign for Liberty PAC have made a concerted effort to get Paul sympathists involved in the political process. Now, tumult in state party organizations has allowed these supporters to rise up the ranks.

"We like strong party leadership when it comes from us," Paul campaign chair Jesse Benton told Business Insider. "Our people work very hard to make sure that their voice is heard."

The fruits of this labor are evident in Iowa, where Paul's former state campaign co-chair A.J. Spiker was just elected as the new chairman of the Iowa Republican Party. Spiker replaces Matt Strawn, who stepped down over this year's Iowa caucus dustup. In Nevada, the state chair has also resigned over caucus disaster, and several Ron Paul supporters are well-positioned to step up to fill the void. These new leaders not only expand Paul's influence at the state level, but also help protect Paul and his hard-won delegates from state party machinations as the delegate-selection process moves to district and state conventions, and eventually the Republican National Convention this summer.

"We are always trying to bring people into the party," Benton said. "I think that is a very positive thing for Republicans. Ron is the person who can build the Republican base, bring new blood into the party. That's how you build the party."

In Maine, the caucus disaster has made the state GOP prime for a Ron Paul takeover. And that means that Paul's hard-won delegates will be protected as the delegate selection process

"We are taking over the party," Wead told BI. "That's the important thing — and that is what we are doing in Maine."

Poll: Ron Paul Most Favorable Republican Candidate

Most likeable candidate among key voting blocs

LAKE JACKSON, Texas -- 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul is the most-liked GOP candidate according to a new CNN/ORC International poll.

Paul has a net favorability of +8 compared to rivals Santorum, Romney, and Gingrich who have net favorability ratings of - 6, -20, and -38 respectively.

Notably, Congressman Paul also has the highest favorability among non-white voters, men, women, voters under 50, and independent voters compared to his GOP challengers.

“Ron Paul has a consistent record of being a true conservative and standing up to big government,” said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton. “Voters are looking for someone who is willing to be honest with them and it should come as no surprise that the only politician who has been speaking the truth for the past 30 years is well liked.”

The results are based on a telephone survey conducted February 10th through the 13th with a random sample of 1,026 American adults.

The full results of the poll can be found here.

This comes on the heels of a PPP poll which showed Ron Paul the most competitive GOP contender among independent voters.

Ron Paul gets his wish: A recount in Maine

Ron Paul took second in the Maine straw polls, but argued he could have won if all the votes were included. (AP photo)

Under severe pressure from Ron Paul’s supporters and other grassroots Republicans, the Maine State Republican Party reversed course and is planning to “reconfirm” the results from the state’s Feb. 11 caucus.

After receiving criticism regarding votes not included in the original tally, the Executive Committee met Thursday and agreed to confirm the vote counts with town chairmen and update the totals. The committee also voted unanimously to include results from the Washington County caucus, which was postponed for a week because of snowfall.

In past presidential election cycles, Maine has received little attention. This year, however, the state’s caucuses drew national interest as Ron Paul looked to the Pine Tree State for his first win and Mitt Romney looked to end a three-state losing streak.

When Romney edged out Paul in the vote by only 194 votes in the official announcement last Saturday evening, Paul and his supporters pointed to the Washington County postponement, as the Texas congressman expected to do well there. Many of his supporters suggested the postponement was intentional, arguing that 3 to 4 inches of snow is not a big deal for Maine and the local county chairman supports Romney.

Once town chairmen confirm the vote counts, the totals will be updated on the Maine Republican Party website.

Gary Howard, Paul’s national press secretary, suggested the Texas representative isn’t concerned about winning a majority of the straw poll votes, and instead expects to win delegates.

“Whatever the outcome, Congressman Paul is confident that he will have the Maine delegation going into the Tampa convention,” he said.

Ron Paul Endorsed By Missouri State Rep. Paul Curtman

Poised to introduce Dr. Paul tonight, Rep. Curtman cites prolife stance, protection of liberty, and ‘Plan to Restore America’ as inspiration for endorsement

LAKE JACKSON, Texas– 2012 Republican Presidential candidate was endorsed today by Missouri State Representative Paul Curtman of the 105th Legislative District, comprising parts of Franklin, Jefferson, and St. Louis counties.

Rep. Curtman, a rising star in the conservative political establishment, will introduce Dr. Paul tonight at a campaign rally the 12-term Congressman from Texas will hold in Kansas City.
In making his public endorsement, Rep. Curtman issued the following statement:

“Missouri is a prolife state, and if we handle the abortion issue at the state level like Ron Paul says, then we could end the practice of abortion in Missouri.

“Political office is reserved as a position of service, not a position of status. The fact that Ron Paul hasn’t applied for congressional benefits tells me that he is a public servant determined to protect my liberty.

“I find great value in Ron Paul’s principled stand for protecting personal freedom and sound financial principles. Blind loyalty to political figures has done nothing but expand the size of government, and it creates budget deficits that will take generations to pay off. Ron Paul has a plan to cut a trillion dollars of spending his first year, and he has consistently fought for personal freedom throughout his time in Congress.”

Today an ardent student of history and outspoken defender of the U.S. Constitution, Paul R. Curtman graduated from Pacific High School in 1999. He subsequently enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served his country as an infantryman with Golf Co. 2nd Battalion 3rd Marines. As a Sergeant in the Marines, Paul deployed to the Middle East in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
After leaving active duty, Paul continued his service as a Marines Reservist for six years. During that time, Paul attended the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where he earned a bachelors’ degree in Political Science. Upon graduation, he became licensed as a Series 7 Investment Representative and employed at a major investment firm.

Paul is the fourth of five children with two brothers and two sisters. His father, Dr. C.R. Curtman, has pastored a Baptist church for nearly 35 years with the support of his wife, Paul’s mother. Paul’s brothers and sisters include a biologist, accountant, police officer, and businessman.

In addition to his endorsement as a lawmaker in the Show-Me State, as a function of this announcement Rep. Curtman also joins the national advisory board of “Veterans for Ron Paul,” in particular its Missouri steering committee.

Providing a strong boost to Ron Paul’s Missouri state organization, such endorsements present Ron Paul as the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney. They also demonstrate that the 12-term Congressman from Texas has the only campaign organization capable of maintaining a 50-state competition with the moderate-establishment Romney.

Details of Ron Paul’s event to be held tonight are as follows. Time is Central.

Why Paul is the Most Electable Against Obama

That one must build coalitions to win elections is politics 101. The Republican presidential nominee must appeal to independents and disaffected Democrats to be successful. Ronald Reagan did this handily. Barack Obama also did well with independents and disaffected Republicans.

For Reagan in 1980, much of his success was backlash against Jimmy Carter and Reagan capitalized on it. For Obama in 2008, much of his success was backlash against George W. Bush and Obama capitalized on it.

Iowa was a perfect example of Obama benefiting from anti-Bush sentiment. In 2004, Bush barely bested John Kerry, 50% to 49%. Bush was not exactly Mr. Popular in 2004, but Kerry was also a weak candidate. By 2008, America was pretty fed up with Bush and the Republicans and Iowa was a microcosm of this, giving Obama a decisive 54% to 44% victory over John McCain.

In an election where Americans are now just as fed up with Obama as they were with Bush in 2008, where do Iowans stand? Reports The Washington Post:
A new Des Moines Register poll shows Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) would best President Obama in the Hawkeye State if the general election were held today.

In the Iowa Poll, which surveyed 611 likely Iowa voters over Feb. 12-15 and had a margin of error of 4 percentage points, Paul would take 49 percent to Obama’s 42 percent.

He is the only one of the GOP White House hopefuls who would defeat Obama in Iowa if the election were held today, according to the survey.

Former senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) would be in a dead heat with Obama, taking 48 percent to Obama’s 44 percent, as would former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney (R), who would take 46 percent to 44 percent for Obama. Both candidates are within the margin of error in a potential matchup with Obama.

The poll shows Obama with a wide lead over former House speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.). Obama would take 51 percent to Gingrich’s 37 percent in Iowa if the election were held today…

Obama is going to campaign against the Republican nominee as a George W. Bush redo. Few if any Americans want to return to the big spending and endless wars of the Bush era. The problem for Obama is, few if any Americans want to remain in the current era of big spending and endless wars.

Only Paul represents a rejection of the bipartisan status quo. Only Ron Paul can change our government and politics in a substantive way that majorities of voters hungered for in the last election and continue to crave in 2012. Americans still want the “change” they were promised. This recent Iowa poll is but a small glimpse of this.

Paul supporters pack Union Station for Republican hopeful

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - - Ron Paul walked out in front of an energetic crowd of around 1,500 people at Union Station on Saturday Night to chants of popular Ron Paul sayings like "end the fed."

He said his campaign is gaining momentum.

"Our numbers are growing and we expect that the other individuals will not necessarily keep up at the top," said Paul.

Paul is in Kansas City to try to gain support for the caucus' that will be held in March in both Kansas and Missouri.

Paul's speech focused on his key themes of smaller government and protecting personal freedoms.

"We need more individual liberty we want understanding of private property rights and we need sound money, we need to bring the troops home and save a lot of money," said Paul.

His supporters wore colorful shirts with "Ron Paul Revolution" on the front. Sarah Rieger likes his idea of making government small and protecting the middle class.

"We are spending too much money overseas but were not spending money here taking care of our own people," said Rieger.

Paul wouldn't speculate on how well he will do in Missouri. His next campaign stop will be next week in North Dakota.
