`Change N.C. law'? No, don't cater to illegals
In response to "Change N.C. law" (Nov. 29 editorial):Have you gone mad? Have you not noticed the huge cultural and economic changes affecting the U.S.? Illegals are stealing our jobs and burdening our institutions, especially medicine (free emergency room care), education (free public schools) and law enforcement (high crime rates). They receive much of their income in cash, which goes unreported and untaxed and winds up back in their country of origin rather than being reinvested in the U.S.

Offering them in-state tuition rates will make North Carolina a magnet for illegals. What a bad deal for law-abiding citizens who have poured taxes and gifts into our public colleges.

What you really want to teach them is that our laws don't really matter: Not only will we not prosecute them, but also we will give them a discount to attend our schools. Is this the Observer's idea of how to deter more of them from coming here illegally?

This is the response I received from the governor's office regarding my e-mail. Notice how the Governor of NC, Mike Easley, is running from the issue, hiding in the closet and showing no backbone or leadership whatsoever. A true jellyfish, libidiot politician.


Thank you for your email about the NC Community College System and the admission of undocumented individuals.

The November 7, 2007, memo to all community college presidents was issued from the office of the NC Community College System President Martin Lancaster. Since this was a decision made solely by the Community College System, you should direct your concerns to President Lancaster at LANCASTER@ncccs.cc.nc.us or by calling 919.807.6950.

The letter that has been reported and referenced by the Community College System Office as their basis for their most recent decision was written in the office of the Attorney General in 1997 and had nothing to do with immigration but instead dealt with the issue of whether or not a convicted felon could attend a community college when ordered by the court to do so.
