American Apparel executive talking about illegal immigrants

Last night I was watching this infomercial for American Apparel that they've been playing on a TV in the display window of their clothing store. It features one of the companies big-wigs giving a speech at some kind of convention. He talks about the workers in their big factory in Los Angeles, and he mentions that almost all of the blue-collar workers in Los Angeles are illegal immigrants. "Most of the workers, the majority of the workers in Los Angeles are undocumented." He also says for $100 bucks you can go to McArthur Park and buy a phoney green card. And that all the businesses in Los Angeles accept this, even though everyone knows its phoney. He calls this "the great hypocricy," because everyone -- businesses, politicians, welfare workers, etc -- knows this is going on but they all look the other way. THe big-wig is joking about all this, as if its the funniest, most ironic thing he's ever heard. His solution, of course, is "a border-less world." THis is his idea of the great emerging future for whats left of America. Watching this guy, this weasel, in action, giving his "witty" speech, I couldn't help thinking; "We have met the enemy, and it is HIM!"

The guy in the infomercial is Dov Charney, the CEO of American Apparel. He's one of those "hip" executive types. Theres a clip of Charney being interviewed on the Lou Dobbs show (which I haven't been able to see) thats on their website: http://www.americanapparel.net From what I can make of Charney's schtick its sort of: "Isn't it great that we're setting up factories here in America for American workers instead of sending all the jobs overseas. Of course we're shipping all these illegal immigrants over to America to work in our American factories, and isn't this just great?" Forgive me for being under-impressed.

The Americanconsumer pays more for American mae clothing only the clothing workers are illegal. The whole American claim is just so that Charney does not have to work south of the border. Any of ALIPAC's many Mexican American supporters care to start a new clothing company "named Honestly Mexican" and hire some relatives where they are legally authorized to work? Tiajuana Hermosillo etc.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

I walk by the American Apparel store every night, and I can't help watching the promotional video that plays non-stop in their display window; corporate CEO Dov Charney laughing, as if its the funniest, the whackiest thing in the world, that "most of the workers, the majority of the workers in Los Angeles are undocumented." And that for $100 you can easily buy a phony Green Card in McCarthur Park. And that all the local businesses, government, welfare agencies, and police in Los Angeles KNOW this is going on, and yet actively condone it and support it.

And I wonder if the average American is even aware of this. That one of the biggest and most inflluential cities in America -- Los Angeles -- is no longer an American city. That it is now an occupied city. That its been taken over by a foreign government.

I can think of a worse solution, but I won't go there.

    http://www.americanapparel.net/mission/index.html

    Mission

American Apparel is a vertically integrated manufacturer, distributor and retailer of T-shirts and related products. All of our garments are cut and sewn at our 800,000-square-foot facility in downtown Los Angeles.

We are trying to rediscover the essence of classic products like the basic T-shirt, once an icon of Western culture and freedom. Our goal is to make garments that people love to wear without having to rely on cheap labor.

Every aspect of the production of our garments, from the knitting of the fabric to the photography of the product, is done in-house. By consolidating this entire process, we are able to pursue efficiencies that other companies cannot because of their overreliance on outsourcing.

Our downtown Los Angeles factory, now considered the largest sewn-products facility in the United States, is a design lab where creative ideas, efficient manufacturing techniques, and concepts for designing and selling T-shirts are developed and put to the test. The challenge for companies like American Apparel is to establish new ways of doing business that are efficient and profitable without exploiting workers.

While apparel is a universal necessity that transcends almost all cultural and socioeconomic boundaries, most garments are made in exploitative settings. We hope to break this paradigm.
Sounds all good until you get to know more about it. What a Shame. By the way, if I remember correctly, they also buy material from outside the USA from what I understand. You wont find them on our web site.

It's outrageous!!! Just outrageous. If he is hiring illegals, then he needs to be prosecuted and sent to jail. I'll be CERTAIN not to purchase any of his T-Shirts. I had to laugh at his big speel about all that goes into a T-Shirt....as if making a T-Shirt is some kind of big deal. For the garment industry, this is the easiest thing to sew. American Workers used to sew these, jeans, suits, dresses, blouses, real shirts, pants, coats, etc., etc., and if you've ever had the opportunity to be in one of these "real garment" facilities, the speed, skill and quality of the workmanship would literally blow your mind!! They could sew it faster than your eyes could keep up with the garment. Hundreds of thousands of American Women made some of the most beautiful perfectly stitched fine clothing ever made.

You don't like the clothes you buy for one reason or another?

It's because of the sewing. The American Sewers were the Best, they made good wages, had good benefits, and loved their work and fellow employees.
