Brian503a--Good Posts!! I find it humorous that they are claiming they haven't increased capacity because of "low profits" when they've had record earnings sufficient to buy each other out, but can't invest in some swamp land to build a new site. I could find them each 3 a piece in 90 days. So could anyone in their "real estate departments". But, guess what....most of them eliminated their "real estate departments". They outsourced to....brokers and consultants who don't have the level of expertise required to deal with all the complexities.

This will allow the free market to play....and perhaps create a long-over due exploration into new forms of fuel and energy. When there is money to be made, American entrepreneurs will rise to the occasion.

AND, consider this....when there is a refinery shortage such as was discussed in the articles, it means they can't refine it fast enough. Have you seen a station that DIDN'T HAVE ANY GAS? So, even with the "shortage", there is still adequate capacity to get it to the pump by the time you've needed it. It cost the same.....to get it there.....so why the price hikes? Increase in demand, not a shortage of supply.

There is also another major "shortage". Shortage of companies. There used to be 6 major companies...Exxon, Mobile, Chevron, Texaco, Phillips, and Conoco....all competing against each other for our business.

    NOW:

    Exxon and Mobile are ONE.

    Chevron and Texaco are ONE.

    Phillips and Conoco are ONE.

    1 + 1 + 1 = 3

    3/6 = .50 = 50% reduction in COMPETITION!!

    Hello.....Monopoly!!

Monopoly = Higher Prices and Consumer Abuse.

These mergers should have never been approved under Anti-Trust Laws.

That only leaves SUNOCO and BP and some of Amoco I believe.

5 to 6 major companies is not enough competition in the US to avoid monopolistic action and consumer abuse.

Fill your tank half-full and when you fill, fill it the next morning instead of that night. Sure it's a pain to only fill it half full...and fill it twice as aften...I mean.....it takes all of 5 minutes!!

Try it and watch those pump prices slide....have some fun, you deserve it!!

BP took over Amoco. And Shell is owned by a Dutch firm if I remember correctly.

Steve, a revolt in China is a long shot. The government there has become increasingly repressive. Remember Tianamen Square? They killed some 5,000 to 6,000 protestors (which they deny) and they have incarcerated some 50-60,000 or more for political reasons. They are brutally repressing all religions and philosophies other than the brand of Marxism they espouse.

The leaders of China are becoming super rich and super powerful. They saw the Soviet Union collapse and Russia's subesquent economic woes and they have no intention of going that way. They are putting one face toward the world, a face which looks like a benign, developing country. Underneath, they are planning for eventual world domination. They are threatening Taiwan and us with it. Taiwan, by the way, produces 85% of the computer chips in the world. Do you want that to go to China?

They are making rapid advances in technology. They will soon outstip us economically and then they will exceed us militarily. By the 2010's they will have more strategic nuclear weapons than we. They will have a sophisticated missle defense system. They will then threaten the world and we will be relatively powerless if things continue on the current path.

They provided us their war plan for taking Taiwan. It includes sinking U.S. carriers and destroying U.S. bases in Asia if we interfere. Most chillingly, it also includes destroying several U.S. cities with nuclear weapons. They believe we will back down and it won't come to that. They think we will fold and let Taiwan go. We cannot afford to let Taiwan go. Their technology and wealth (over $300,000,000 in hard currency) will only further stoke the Chinese war machine.

You must read Constantine Menges book, China, The Gathering Threat. I am in the process of reading it now and it is chilling. Menges is an international relations scholar and former government official. He warned of the rise of an Islamic Iran before it happened and he was ignored. Guess what, he was right. His arguments about China put together a lot of pieces and are logical and forthright. Read it.

BTW, Mexico cannot compete with China, nor can anyone else. They have slave labor, strict government control of currency, and other unnatural advantages. The normal laws of supply and demand don't work quite the same. Their people may begin to demand more freedom, but their people have never known freedom and their culture is not like ours. They believe in the superiority of the Han Chinese and they believe they deserve to have hegemony over the rest of the world. To the majority, that is more important than freedom or democracy, at least it appears to be.

This is greatest external threat this country has ever faced in its entire history. With illegal immigration destroying us from within and the rise of a hostile, powerful country bent on world domination without, the future could be very bleak indeed. That is why what we are doing is so important. We must continue and expand the fight. The future of our children and grandchildren depends on it.

    BOYCOTT EVERYTHING CHINESE!!!

Constantine Menges talks about it and quotes it a lot in his book.

Here is the latest example of the Chinese government's brutality...from Sky News...

    SIX DIE IN RURAL PROTEST
Shocking footage of crowd control 'Chinese-style' has been obtained by Sky News.

The film shows dozens of hired thugs running amok in a village just 60 miles from the capital Beijing.

Villagers are shown being beaten with long canes while gunfire can be heard in the background.

Six villagers are reported to have died while 50 were injured.

It is the worst footage of violence to emerge from the secretive country since the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989.

The trouble broke out after the hired hands, some wearing helmuts and khakis, moved in to clear land needed by a nearby power station.

Villagers had built trenches and erected tents to protect their land.

The blurred footage shows hand-to-hand fighting between the assailants and the villagers.

At least one person is seen being shot dead.

Gunfire and explosions can be heard and seen on film

The three-minute footage ends when the state's enforcers realise they are being filmed and chase the cameraman.

Dominic Waghorn, Sky's Asia correspondent, said: "These are the pictures China does its best to stop the rest of the world from seeing.

"But this time they have got out.

"It looks like a medieval battle but this is Chinese protest control in the 21st century."

The battle happened last Saturday in the village of Shengyou.

Villagers are reported to have overrun the local headquarters of the Community Party in protest.

Power station bosses are reported to have been negotiating with villagers to buy their land since 2003.

Local governments can chose to take the land and pay minimal compensation if the buyout is considered to be in the public interest.

Hey Berk, your a member over at USP right?

I HIGHLY recommend reading Sun Tzu's Art of War.
Along with that book, Read: 5 Rings by Miyamotto Musashi.

This is a very long article, 7 seven pages.

Thanks, Valis. I read both articles. They are very different and both were informative.

We can't push the panic button, but we had better start making some changes, and soon. Free trade with China is mostly a one way street and our government needs to look past the multinational lobbyist and look at what's in the long term interests of this country.

And we don't need to let up militarily. That would be a huge mistake. If we show weakness in any area, you can be sure they will take advantage of it. They already have....

    Thanks, Valis.
    No problem scarecrow.

China compromised the Clinton Whitehouse, and his presidency. How many of our politicians are now on the take as a result?

FYI. China owns the Panama Canal, and has about 200,000 chinese currently living in Panama.

This bites majorly. However, the good news is, our troops are a lot closer than their troops. If we need it back, we can take it. That goes for the port in the Bahamas as well. At least for now....
