PHOTOS: Unrest in Ferguson spurs police militarization

    M D
    August 12, 2014
    Latest News

Following the police-involved shooting of unarmed teenager Michael Brown, unrest has gripped a St. Louis suburb as protesters and police have clashed for two days straight. The looting and violence that occurred after the tragic shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, resulted not only in multiple arrests, but also a stronger police response.

That brings us to the seemingly glossed over aspect of the unrest in Ferguson: the startling militarization of local police forces.
Some of the photos coming out of Ferguson more closely resemble a war zone than a suburban community in Missouri.
Officers — some riding in military vehicles — responded to the unrest wearing full-camo riot gear, combat boots and armed with “short-barreled 5.56-mm rifles based on the military M4 carbine, with scopes that can accurately hit a target out to 500 meters,” according to Business Insider’s Paul Szoldra.

Szoldra, who served on a U.S. Marine on patrol in Afghanistan, brings a unique perspective to the police situation in Ferguson:

While serving as a U.S. Marine on patrol in Afghanistan, we wore desert camouflage to blend in with our surroundings, carried rifles to shoot back when under enemy attack, and drove around in armored vehicles to ward off roadside bombs.
We looked intimidating, but all of our vehicles and equipment had a clear purpose for combat against enemy forces. So why is this same gear being used on our city streets?
    [...]
Their uniform would be mistaken for a soldier’s if it weren’t for their “Police” patches. They wear green tops, and pants fashioned after the U.S. Marine Corps MARPAT camouflage pattern. And they stand in front of a massive uparmored truck called a Bearcat, similar in look to a mine-resistant ambush protected vehicle, or as the troops who rode in them call it, the MRAP.
“Why do these cops need MARPAT camo pants again,” I asked on Twitter this morning. One of the most interesting responses came from a follower who says he served in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division: “We rolled lighter than that in an actual warzone.”

Ferguson As America: "There Is A Brewing Problem... And It's Extremely Dangerous"

Submitted by Tyler Durden on 08/12/2014 23:51 -0400

Submitted by Martin Armstrong of Armstrong Economics,

Riots are have erupted with hundreds of protesters gathering at a suburban St. Louis police station on Monday demanding murder charges against an officer who shot to death an unarmed black teenager over the weekend. Looting just went nuts like the ’60s. While this is being painted as a race issue, there is yet another issue that is not being addressed – that is the militarization of the civil police forces around the country.

Ever since 911, there has been a trend moving toward much harsher local police.
Here is a photo of how the Boston Police have militarized to the point it looks like war against the people. Even small towns are geared up for war.
The small town of Medford, Oregon with a population of 76,462 has spent millions of dollars to militarize their police. They have their own Swat Teams, yet no incident in history of some major shooting of such a nature to warrant a Swat Team. The entire reason where there was the Second Amendment was to eliminate this very threat of standing armies. We are seeing the abuse of force at every level. Medford Police bought a new vehicle that some say could survive a so-called the apocalypse. They used their Swat Team to go after a mere carjacker.
Medford, New Jersey with a population of just 23,033 also has a Swat Team. They rushed in and held two white kids on the ground at gun-point for shooting potatoes into a lake setting hair spray as the propellant.

The whole thing about standing armies has been their historical use out of boredom.
It is a shame to pay for something and then not use it. Police use to be friendly as shown in Normal Rockwell’s classic painting. Sure there are a few good souls still left. But the attitudes have shifted to being just mean and nasty as they look at the civilian population as evil.

This is a problem that is brewing and is extremely dangerous to say the least. Examples of police abuse are all over the internet. There has been a loss of respect for the people and there seems to be no way to reverse this process.

They sprayed protesters in the eyes during Occupy Wall Street movements everywhere. The conduct has been outrageous. This killing of this black teen is not simply racism. The problems are much deeper. Claiming this is just racism deflects the entire issue and makes it simply black-v-white. This is something far more serious for it is impacting our entire society.

The protests over land was yet another example. The police showed up with weapons and told the people they would shoot to kill. The police are being transformed from protecting the public into protecting government from the public. Most do not even see what transformation they have gone through.

    * * *

Michael Snyder has a different persepctive...

Even though the economy has somewhat stabilized (at least for the moment), levels of anger and frustration have continued to grow in this country. We have been taught to hate one another and to blame one another for our problems, and so now the U.S. is more divided than at any other point in recent memory. For much more on this, please see my previous article entitled "America The Divided: Everyone Knows We Have Problems But There Is Very Little Agreement On Solutions".

We live at a time when things are so tense that even a small spark can light an absolutely huge fire. America has become a tinderbox. Next time it might not be a racially-charged shooting. Next time it might be an Ebola outbreak that sparks looting and panic. Or it might be some sort of financial collapse. We just don't know.

But what we do know is that there are lots and lots of people that are willing to riot and loot and commit unspeakable crimes given the right circumstances.

Decades of social decay have gotten us to the point where the thin veneer of civilization that we all take for granted every single day is wearing dangerously thin.

The truth is that it is not going to take much to push this nation over the edge.

If this kind of rioting can take place in a community with just over 20,000 people, what would a full-blown riot look like in a city with millions of people?

That is a very sobering thing to think about.

Once upon a time in America, you could leave your doors unlocked at night and you could let your kids play in the streets without ever having to worry.

But now we are a sick, decaying nation that has millions of people ready to riot and loot at the drop of a hat.

Is there any hope for us?

Today has been peaceful so far but this stunning picture seems to sum it all up

BREAKING: Source in Ferguson Claims Martial Law Underway Tonight – Flash Grenades, Rubber Bullets, Tear Gas, Military Forces Being Used Against Civilians

    By Eric Odom
    10:49 pm August 13, 2014

We’re going to preface this update by saying we will never defend or side with criminals, looters and/or those looking to do harm to others. There certainly appears to be a credible element of wrongdoing on the side of multiple suspects in the Ferguson area and that simply cannot ever be left unchecked or unpunished.
That said, the Ferguson situation provokes some very difficult questions with some profound and freighting answers. One of the most important questions being the following… at what point does a crime committed by one person immediately void the constitution and the rights guaranteed/protected for innocent Americans?
A source/citizen journalist currently trapped in Ferguson is telling us that Martial Law has been indirectly declared. Militant police state forces have shut down the entire area and removed all constitutionally protected rights, according to the source. We’re told tear gas, rubber bullets, flash grenades and other high-tech riot control weaponry is being used against all citizens, not just those potentially committing crimes.
Two reporters were arrested earlier this evening. Another was hit in the side with a rubber bullet and multiple journalists are dealing with heavy tear gas inhalation.
Many peaceful citizens in the area are completely trapped in their streets. They are being told to “shelter in place” and not allowed to move freely from their homes to places of safety. 1st, 2nd and 4th Amendment rights are reportedly being blatantly violated at every turn.
Again, we’re not suggesting there shouldn’t be justice for those committing crimes in the Ferguson area. But, at what point does the crime of one individual void the constitution for everyone else?
    Inquiring minds want to know.

    UPDATE
: Reporter Joe Biggs says police are specifically targeting journalists and trying to force them out of area.

BREAKING: St. Louis Police Shoot Rioter as Heavily Armed Men Wearing Ski Masks Roam Streets in Middle of Night

    By Eric Odom
    10:27 am August 13, 2014

Keep in mind, folks… this is happening in the heartland of America.
At about 1 a.m., a St. Louis County Police officer shot and critically wounded a man who police said pointed a handgun at the officer near the intersection of West Florissant and Chambers Road.
The shooting happened near Chambers and Sheffingdell Court, not far from the site of protests against police over the fatal shooting of Michael Brown. The location is less than a mile from the QuikTrip on West Florissant that was looted and burned Sunday night.
Police said they received a call reporting about four to five men in the area armed with shotguns and wearing ski masks. They also got reports of shots fired in the area. Police officers arrived and saw “multiple subjects running,” said police spokesman Officer Brian Schellman.
An officer approached one of the men and he pulled a handgun on the officer who then fired, Schellman said.
We’re a little behind on the Missouri riots story due to our time with the Border Convoy. That said, we will be providing significant updates throughout the day as the tense situation unfolds.
