GREENSBORO -- A Winston-Salem man accused of assaulting four women in Forsyth County earlier this year now faces additional charges in connection with three attacks in Greensboro.

Police have charged Gilberto Hernandez, 24, of 385 Camden Ridge Drive, with first-degree rape, attempted rape and first-degree burglary in the Greensboro incidents.

Police announced the new charges Tuesday. Hernandez remains in the Forsyth County Jail on $1.5 million bond.

Attacks in Greensboro date to May 2004, when a 20-year-old woman was raped in her Brice Street home following a pre-dawn break-in.

Detectives believe the same person attacked a 22-year-old Woodstream Lane woman in January in a second invasion, which took place about 1:30 a.m.

Three weeks later, a man tried to rape a 19-year-old woman on Mayflower Drive.

The attacker appears to have shifted his focus to the west following his third Greensboro attack. Four Winston-Salem women had their homes broken into in February and were sexually assaulted.

Police said Hernandez, who worked at North State Flexibles, a printing and lamination company in Greensboro, faces four counts of first-degree rape in the Winston-Salem attacks.

Winston-Salem investigators caught a break in the case in August when Hernandez was named as a suspect in an attempted break-in at a townhouse community inside the city. It was unclear Tuesday how officers identified him.

"His general physical description matched the general physical description of the person wanted in the assaults," Lt. Bill Cobb of Winston-Salem police said. "He was identified as a suspect. DNA was obtained and sent off."

Police have eliminated Hernandez as a suspect in a series of high-profile sexual assaults around the UNCG campus between December 2002 and May 2003.

Officials said Tuesday the DNA collected from the UNCG victims differs from the sample drawn from Hernandez.

While no firearm was used in Greensboro, three of the Winston-Salem victims told police their attacker brandished a gun.

They all gave police similar descriptions: the man spoke with a Spanish accent and kept his face covered.

The assault investigations involved four agencies: Winston-Salem and Greensboro police, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and the State Bureau of Investigation.

"We pooled our resources and shared information," said Greensboro police Capt. Gary Hastings, who heads his department's detectives division. "Typically, serial rapists only stop when they're arrested."

Man charged in more assaults in Greensboro

A Winston-Salem man who was arrested Friday night in connection with four sexual assaults here in February was charged yesterday in connection with three other sexual assaults in Greensboro.

The Greensboro attacks linked by DNA to Gilberto Cruz Hernandez, 24, happened in May 2004 and in January and February of this year, police said.

Hernandez, of 385 Camden Ridge Drive in Winston-Salem, is being held in the Forsyth County Jail with bond set at $1.5 million.

The string of assaults put women in both ci-ties on edge and prompted warnings from police about a serial rapist.

Two of the victims were students at Wake Fo-rest University who lived off campus. After the four sexual assaults in Winston-Salem in February, police said they thought that the attacker may be the same man who was assaulting women in Greensboro.

By the end of March, evidence sent to the state crime lab had linked six of the cases. But police didn't have a suspect until Friday, when the crime lab notified them that DNA evidence from a town-house break-in Aug. 5 on Motor Road matched DNA from the sex assaults.

The town house was not occupied.

Police said that the seven home invasions linked to Hernandez are:

• The rape of a woman May 8, 2004, on Brice Street in Greensboro.

• The rape of a woman Jan. 14 at an apartment on Woodstream Lane in Greensboro.

• The attempted rape of a woman Feb. 1 at a house on Mayflower Drive in Greensboro.

• The rape of a woman Feb. 1 on Penner Street in Winston-Salem.

• The rape of a woman Feb. 5 at an apartment on Polo Road in Winston-Salem.

• The rape of a woman Feb. 17 at an apartment on Bethabara Hills Court in Winston-Salem.

• The first-degree sexual offense against a woman Feb. 22 at an apartment on Commercial Plaza Drive in Winston-Salem.

There were several similarities in the assaults.

The attacker covered his face and spoke with a Hispanic accent. In many cases, he displayed a gun, often getting into the apartments and homes in the early morning hours through unlocked doors and windows.

Investigators are still looking into at least one other sexual assault that occurred about the same time in which no one has been charged.

That case was at an apartment on Crowne Oaks Circle in Winston-Salem.

It happened the same morning as the attack on Polo Road.

A series of highly-publicized sexual assaults in late 2002 and early 2003 near the campus of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro remains unsolved.

There are a couple of statements in this article that raise my suspicion. The man is 24 years old and the victims describe him as speaking with a Spanish accent.

I have contacted the three reporters who have written the three articles I've posted and I hope I can determine whether this man was here illegally. If I don't hear from them today with an ANSWER, I will try to contact the police department and see if they will tell me.

Another idea--I know we do have some law enforcement officers or some retired ones at least on ALIPAC. Would some of you be willing to contact either the Winston-Salem Police Dept. or the Greensboro Police Dept.? They might be more apt to give that information to one of you than to me.

I will keep pursuing it because I am VERY DISTURBED about a serial rapist in our community no matter WHAT their status.

Somehow or another!! I just don't have a good feeling about this one. I don't understand why no reporter has touched that issue. They were sure all over it when Scott Gardner was killed by the drunk driver so I'm going to make sure that we get the pertinent information about this serial RAPIST in our neighborhood.

They might be concealing it for fear the Mexicans will come rescue him. Then he could filter back in through our porous border and commence a new wave of rape, pillage and plunder.
