Getting organized
There are numerous Hispanic organizations in Waukegan. If I walked in would I be denied? Here's the latest. And this was on our local newspaper's front page today. If this guy is going door to door how does he know if they are legal or not?
Campaign to register new citizens to vote

With the slogan "Today we march, tomorrow we vote" an immigrant coalition plans to register thousands of new voters this summer. It hopes to build on the momentum of recent massive rallies in favor of immigration reform while Congress is debating what to do with the nation's 11 to 12 million undocumented immigrants.
By the November election, the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights plans to register 15,000 new voters and mobilize about 50,000 people to go to the polls. They are hoping to motivate potential voters among naturalized citizens and the U.S.-born children of immigrants.
"We're trying to instill the vote in parents so they'll start it and continue with their children," said Germain Castellanos, coordinator of the New Americans Initiative Democracy Project in Waukegan.
He is going door to door asking residents to register to vote in neighborhoods with large immigrant populations. He's also asking businesses that see a lot of Latino clients to participate by providing clients with information about how to register to vote.
"We're trying to have people register to vote where they wouldn't think about registering. We'll have volunteers outside of grocery stores, volunteers outside the bank to remind them a little bit to vote," Castellanos said. "I'm trying to plant the seed to get people involved in civic engagement."
Nationwide, the percentage of Latinos registered to vote — about 58 percent — lags behind the national average of 72 percent of the adult citizen population, according to a recent report from the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. Only 42 percent of Latino children of immigrants, aged 18 to 24, registered to vote.
The Democracy Project is part of the New Americans Initiative which focuses on registering the estimated 404,000 immigrants eligible to become naturalized citizens in Illinois. In Waukegan there are 7,833 legal permanent residents who are eligible to become naturalized citizens.
"This is really going to affect Waukegan elections if it goes well," said Castellanos.
The recent marches have inspired many more immigrants like Rosa Medina of Waukegan to vote. Originally from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, she became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1983 when she was a teenager, but registered to vote for the first time last week.
"All the marches that we see taking place here and in Washington made me realize it really affects the people, the way we are living here. We need to vote to make changes," Medina said.
In the weeks prior to the November elections volunteers will call registered voters to remind them to vote. The project is also taking place in other suburban areas in the Chicago area that have large immigrant populations including Elgin, Joliet and Aurora.
Some of the barriers to becoming a citizen are limited English skills, attachment to home countries and the $400 application fee for low-income residents, said Catherine Salgado, a spokesperson with Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.
"What we're trying to promote is the importance of changing immigration laws. Right now they are hurting the immigrant community and the only way to change that is to vote," Salgado said.
For more information about registering to vote if you are a U.S. citizen, 18 years old or older, who lives in Lake County, visit the county clerk's office at 18 N. County St., Waukegan, or call (847) 377-2410. Citizens may also apply to register to vote by mailing in an application which can be downloaded from www.co.lake.il.us/cntyclk.

Chicano,
To understand the correct interpretation of the 14th Amendment we need to understand what the co-author of the amendment wrote about the Amendment. In 1866, Senator Jacob Howard wrote, "This will not, of course, include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors, or foreign ministers accredited to the Government of the United States, but will include every other class of persons." Senator Howard wrote the addition phrase specifically because he wanted to make it clear that the simple accident of birth in the US is not sufficient to justify citizenship.
The US Supreme Court recognized this when they ruled in 1873 that the phrase (and subject to the jurisdiction thereof) excluded "children of ministers, consuls, and citizens of foreign states born within the United States."

Packing? And go where?
Unless your progenitors got in on one of the multiple amnesties previously perpetrated against the citizens of this country, you have ZERO right to be here.
Like I said, when Plyler v. Doe gets overturned, I pray it's retroactive.

You're banned. Stay off our boards. You can't discuss a topic without hurling insults. Very typical of your side. I am continually impressed with the lack of rational thought and emotional defamatory attacks coming from your side of the issue.
We have to defeat you, otherwise our country will be filled with people that share your lack of values and your lack of civility.
You should try a little harder to assimilate the good things about America and Americans that make you want to come here instead of trying to impose your aggressive and insulting style of attacks to try and get your way.
Our people have work to do designed to defeat you and what you stand for Chicano.
You are banned for not following the rules regarding insulting other users that took their time to discuss this with you.
If you would like to e-mail me an apology, I will post it for the board in your absence.
