AmericanE, It is spreading like the plague. Here all the Californians move in to get away from the mess and gangs that are there. They want to get away from the big city life I here it all the time but you know what the first thing they do is? There is not enough shopping we need a Wal-Mart on every corner. Gee you guys don’t have a Home depot Boy just can't live with out that. Now the Dreadford city council is using MURA to rebuild the down town with Tax payer dollars but Guess what Lithia Motors is going to be in the heart of the rebuild with there brand new offices. They are going to be the core anchor. MURA (Medford Urban Renewal Agency) is threatening emanate domain to seize property for the project. SO you have a government agency stealing Private property for a fortune 500 company. This is wrong on so many levels yet no one seems to give a hoot. Ok my little rant I need to get back focused on the real Issue here. Sorry for the side track. I do like people from California by the way. I don't mean to sound like I don't. Just don't try to make Medford LA.

And, the driver's license thing - almost killed me last winter.
Some people actually expect to drive around under bad road conditions (ice over snow), with lots of hills, driving a big old 2WD pickup with bald tires, no chains nor studded tires of course, and w/no weight in back end - eg. no traction.... and an inexperienced driver to boot and... geeez, one big disaster waiting to happen. Glad I was able to get out of the way in time!!!
Hee Hee. It must have been tough to tell who was driving with the truck bed empty. Sometimes you can tell who is driving by the way it is overloaded and the manor in which it is loaded.

American_made, they have been coming up here, but the ones we're getting up here are the yuppy hippies.

They talk of urban renewal, green building, whole living, urban growth boundaries and sustainable living. They buy their foods from upscale health food stores and harp at those of us who do not (more like cannot because of prices).

They freak out if they see someone in an old beater car (like people really want to drive nasty old cars they just do not have a choice) that is a gas guzzler, they sit at corner cafe's and coffee stores and talk about foreign films and their meanings. These people also choose not to have children as they feel they do not want to contribute to the worlds overpopulation (good, who wants them to breed anyways!) and enviromental decimation.

When these couples do have children the mother chooses to stay home with the child so their child can be "hand raised" (WOW!! What a concept, millions of mothers worldwide past and present have been so trendy and they did not even know it).

Yes, this is what Portland has been getting. What did we do up here to deserve these people?

AE, so you are getting all the gold spoon club. Yup we have them too. They are more concerned about our county commissioners opening up PRIVIATE CITIZENS LAND so they can sub divide it into 10 to 20 acre parcels then they are about government taking private citizen’s land to enhance a private business.

Of course, you never know what can happen.

Remember Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and his merry band of lunatics who took over the town of Antelope in the 80's? Peace, love, 93 Rolls Royces and attempted murder of the Bhagwan's doctor.

Plus, in 1984, they conducted a bioterrorist attack involving salmonella typhimurium contamination in the salad bars of the 10 restaurants at The Dalles, Oregon.

We experienced a bit of the same thing.

We complain that the illegals don't assimilate - but sometimes Americans don't. We tend to forget that within America there are many different cultures and ways of living. While we all complain from time to time, if we want something changed, we usually do it. We really don't want or need someone to move to the area and immediately begin making demands for this services or that serivce or new roads, etc.

Take you time, get the lay of the land, maybe you'll like the lifestyle - even with bad roads and no Starbuck's and biscotti.

Trixie, I like old bumpy roads and homemade coffee. I like greasy spoon diners out in the high desert, those places usually have the nicest people.

Thank goodness that most of the yuppies find those places uninteresting. We are pretty fed up with things over in this area, it has gotten out of hand with all these big box stores popping up everywhere and all the local small businesses unable to compete for prices going out of business.

I miss the era when hardly no one came to Oregon, they thought it was too backwoods and stayed in their states. That is when Oregon was nice, friendly and you could still find small farms right in the middle of town (I kid you not, there were little farms still all over Portland not long ago), now those are all gone and condo's are built in their place.

Now the people who keep chickens within the city limits do it to have "natural" pest control for their gardens, and since they are vegans they do not eat the chickens or the eggs.

No one keeps horses in town anymore, or cows, like they used to.

I suppose I should clarify that we have two new types of people here, the yuppie hippies and the consumerists, both foreign to Oregon.

Has my vote but I am not allowed to eat at the greasy spoons any more. To much comfort food (Bacon).
