I have read many reports that conditions for the chinese and vietnamese citizens have improved. They have definitely become more "westernized", some would argue that is improvement.

But your question is backwards. How many times have trade sanctions helped overthrow a dictator and improved the lives of citizens in those countries?

We had trade sanctions against Iraq for years (Saddam still managed to live it up).
We have had trade sanctions against Cuba for even longer (Castro does not go without whatever he wants)
We have had trade sanctions against N. Korea for a long time (Kim Jong-il seems to be getting by just fine.)

Whereas the trade sanctions have arguably kept the citizens of those countries impoverished.
I don't know much about trade and sanction policies however I respect Jonathon Hoenig very much. He was on Fox today saying that our trade with China is a good thing, and their interest in American business is a plus for both countries. For what that's worth. Trade imbalance and tariffs aside.

I don't see how our trade policies with China is good for America. Maybe it is good for American business, but not America. American business includes businesses that simply have home offices here, but all their work is done elsewhere. It is good for their bottom line, but I think it is disastrous for America.

How can a country survive whose largest employer is a discount retail store that sells imported, shoddy, poorly made merchandise. That can't be good.

We make very little we use today. If China decided to not sell to us for just a short period of time, we would be up the creek.

    I see nothing good there.

Yes, let's let the rest of the world take care of themselves. The industrialized nations have at least as good an economy as we do and some probably better. Let them defend themselves and Europe.

So we defend Saudia Arabia so they can, in turn, hold us up on oil prices. That makes a lot of sense.

We trade with China and we are directly responsible for their being the powerhouse they are and growing everyday. Yet, we feel we have to maintain some presence in the ME because we think they might decide to take over some country - with the money we have sent them. Does that make sense?

WE take a lot of Russian refugees and Russian immigrants to help them and we have given Russia a lot of foreign aid. Yet, we must keep a military presense in the ME because they might take over. That makes a lot of sense.

We have to stop listening to the mantra of the government and the war manufacturers and begin to put things in perspective.

We have to start thinking America FIRST, we are the engine of the world so if America is Healthy the world will be also and they would be able to take care of themselves.
We have to build our industrial park again. The big corporations dismanteled that for greed not for America's interess.
Back to a real money, our tax dollars to beefit our country, honor for Americans-no more torture prisioners, no more invasions of other countries to put money into the pockets of corrupts politicians, sovereignty for America, no more goverment dictating our private life.

The "current" trade policies with China are NOT good. Bush is letting them walk all over us due to currency manipulation, unfair tarriffs, etc.

Free trade itself is not bad----and the US will NOT survive unless we have trade. However, it needs to be FAIR trade policies.

It should NOT be advantageous for US companies to pick up and move to foreign countries or let our markets be flooded with foreign goods due to:

    --Currency manipulation

    --Tarrif manipulation

    --Decreased regulations

    --Tax advantages
