    (Natural News) A Hong Kong-based consumer watchdog group is sounding the alarm about the threat of heavy metals and pesticide contamination in goji berries, a popular food item in the Far East and a “superfood” remedy used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
    The Consumer Council tested 27 samples of dried goji berries, discovering that many of them contain heavy metals such as lead – and at concentrations close to the local limit in two different batches.
    Another goji berry threat involves the use of pesticides, which were identified in a shocking 70 percent of the samples tested. The only silver lining is that pesticide levels were all within local and European standards – but this does not necessarily mean they are safe to consume even at these levels.
    Traditional Chinese cooking utilizes goji berries in many dishes, including those involving steamed chicken and stewed soups.
    “The council urges the industry to reduce the use of pesticides and other chemical pest control methods to cut risks to humans and the environment,” said Nora Tam Fung-yee, chairwoman of the council’s research and testing committee.

    As for the various heavy metals detected in the dried goji berry samples, all of them tested positive, with 21 of them showing lead levels ranging from 0.018 mg to 0.29 mg per kilogram. There were also trace levels of cadmium, arsenic, and chromium detected in some of the samples.
    Because cadmium, arsenic, and chromium can damage the lungs and respiratory system when consumed heavily, the council is basically warning people to perhaps not consume as many goji berries as usual because of the elevated risks involved with doing so.
    Two particular samples, Premier Food’s Instant Ningxia Wolfberry and Yu Pin King’s Wolfberry Fruit, were the worst offenders in terms of lead contamination at 0.284 mg/kg and 0.29 mg/kg, respectively. These are very close to the upper limit of lead allowed by the Hong Kong Food Adulteration (Metallic Contamination) Regulations.
    Concerning these two brands, the council referred its results to the Centre for Food Safety for a follow-up. That group tested the same two samples and arrived at different numbers: 0.01 mg/kg of lead in Premier Food and 0 mg/kg of lead in Yu Pin King.
    How the results from the two groups came to be this disparate remains unknown, but perhaps the government-run Centre for Food Safety does not want to find any contamination, while the Consumer Council, an independent group, is actually trying to protect consumers from contamination.
    This is just speculation, of course, but it would appear as though something is amiss in terms of the two groups’ testing protocols. The Centre for Food Safety did say that heavy metals exist in the “natural environment,” the suggestion being that it is normal for them to occur in some foods.
    In 19 of the samples, the council identified 14 different types of pesticides, noting that many farmers spray their goji berries with these chemicals to protect against infestation.
    One sample had seven different types of detectable pesticides, while four contained five or more types.
    “Two samples had 0.062 mg/kg of chlorfenapyr and 0.071 mg/kg of chlorothalonil respectively, which exceeded maximum residue limits set by the European Food Safety Authority, but were lower than the requirements under Hong Kong’s Pesticide Residues in Food Regulation,” reported the South China Morning Post, a Chinese state-run media outlet.
    “… a 60kg (132lbs) adult would have to consume more than 29kg or 17kg of the two foods in question per day respectively for them to pose a health risk.”
    To help remove harmful residue from the surface of goji berries, the council recommends first soaking them in cold drinking water for 15 to 20 minutes before eating them.

    (Natural News) The American Association for the Advancement of Science has released new research showing that tomatoes, a popular fruit-“vegetable,” have feelings, too.
    Much to the horror of vegans everywhere, tomatoes are a lot like meat animals in that they get stressed and even make noises demonstrative of pain when in difficult situations.
    Israeli researchers, publishing their findings in the journal Cell on March 30, explain that tomato and tobacco plants that are stressed, either from dehydration or having their stems severed, emit sounds “that are comparable in volume to normal human conversation.”
    To the human ear, these noises are non-detectable because they are so high-pitched that a person is unable to hear them – but they still occur. Insects, other plants, and possibly even other mammals besides humans can hear them cry out in pain when they lose a “limb” or become dehydrated.
    “Even in a quiet field, there are actually sounds that we don’t hear, and those sounds carry information,” says senior author Lilach Hadany, an evolutionary biologist and theoretician at Tel Aviv University.
    “There are animals that can hear these sounds, so there is the possibility that a lot of acoustic interaction is occurring.”

    While unstressed tomato plants rarely make any noises at all, their stressed counterparts cry out in their own frequencies for help. The sounds they make resemble pops or clicks, and stressed plants can emit anywhere from 3-50 clicks per hour, seemingly at random intervals.
    Unstressed plants, conversely, emit far fewer sounds, if any at all, as they are happy as clams growing in well-lit, well-watered, pest-free conditions.
    “When tomatoes are not stressed at all, they are very quiet,” Hadany added.
    This is really bad news for vegans, who often denigrate meat eaters for hurting animals that have to undergo slaughtering and processing. As sad as this is for the animals in question, the same is technically true of plants, which undergo similar stress upon being pruned or harvested.
    Ben Bartee of PJ Media joked about this from the perspective of smug vegans who are constantly blasting meat eaters for inflicting “cruelty” on the animals from which their dinner plates are derived.
    “The next time you sit down for a meal with a vegan activist, assuming you have the poor fortune to have vegan social acquaintances, and he smugly dives headfirst into a salad full of ripe, juicy tomatoes, remind him of the absolute suffering that his delicious tomatoes cost,” Bartee writes.
    “The tomatoes popping their sweet juice between his molars, remind him that the appendages of a living plant that died screaming to toss his precious salad were ripped unceremoniously from their plant’s embrace, tortured, and killed for his personal satisfaction.”
    In a Study Finds report on the study, it is further revealed that other plants besides tomatoes seem to cry out as well when they undergo stressors.
    “We found that many plants – corn, wheat, grape, and cactus plants, for example – emit sounds when they are stressed,” Hadany is quoted as saying.
    It remains unknown precisely why these plants make such noises, and admittedly it could have to do with the formation and bursting of air bubbles in the plants’ vascular systems, a process known as cavitation.
    “It’s possible that other organisms could have evolved to hear and respond to these sounds,” Hadany adds. “For example, a moth that intends to lay eggs on a plant or an animal that intends to eat a plant could use the sounds to help guide their decision.”

    Lutein acts as a type of shield to protect your eyes against blue light damage, which is becoming even more of a problem as cities replace their orange-tinted street lights with blue light-emitting LEDs, which are white-looking, bright, and heavily straining on the eyes.

    “The outer plexiform layer of the fovea, where the majority of axons of rod and cone photoreceptor cells are located, is the retinal layer having the highest density of macular carotenoids including lutein. Hence the photoreceptors are protected against photo-oxidative damages from blue light.”
    Another thing lutein does is protect the brain against dementia and other forms of degradation. It likewise suppresses the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor, or VEGF, which stimulates the formation of blood vessels that are capable of being upregulated in many types of cancerous tumors.
    “As inflammation and abnormal angiogenesis in retinal vasculature are major pathogenic mechanisms of many ocular diseases, lutein’s functions in suppressing inflammatory response and VEGF expression make it effective in reducing the severity of these diseases,” the aforementioned research team further noted in their research.
    The moral of the story, here, is to eat more carrots, dark leafy greens, pastured eggs, and other carotenoid-rich foods, which may help to protect your eyesight, not to mention the protective effects it offers in cancer prevention.

    But… How Do You Prepare to Treat Cancer?

    How To Easily Prepare Your Own Homemade Ginger Extract

    All you need is a bit of ginger, a neutral cooking oil, such as olive or sunflower oil, and a bit of heat for the extraction process.

    #1. Wash it off


    Freshly Harvested Vermont Grown Ginger
    Start by thoroughly washing and drying your ginger root. Allow the root to dry for at least a few hours or overnight to ensure it’s completely dry before you begin. Grate or thinly slice the ginger into a heat safe container, such as a small baking pan, enameled cast iron or mason jar. I’ve used an enameled cast iron because it allows me to make small batches, and cover a single layer of ginger with just a think layer of oil. The cast iron helps to moderate the heat, and keep the ginger extracting at a constant low temperature.

    #2. Peel and grate



    Peeling the ginger first helps it taste better, but it’s not necessary as the peel also contains medicinal compounds. In a survival situation, I would want to make use of every scrap of ginger, and I wouldn’t waste the peel.

    #3. Cover with oil




    Cover the ginger completely with your neutral cooking oil. In this case, I’ve used sesame oil because I want to incorporate the ginger oil into my cooking and sauces, and the flavor of sesame complements ginger. Sesame oil also has its own cancer fighting properties, and is showing promise as a treatment for colon cancer.
    #4. Extract the essentials

    Place the heat-safe container in the oven on its lowest setting, usually around 150 to 170 degrees. Extract the oil for 2 to 4 hours.
    In a pinch, placing your extract near the wood stove also works to provide heat, but avoid placing it in direct contact with the stove as that will deep fry your oil rather than gently extract.
