The building took about 30 days to complete. The design of the cabin was based on visual observations. Such survival shelters were considered amateurish and improvised, built in a hurry from scrap materials.

Report Outlines Six Carrying Exercises for Strengthening Multiple Muscle Groups

Six Carrying Exercises for Muscle Strengthening
A therapist-authored article published Sept. 20, 2026, in The Epoch Times outlines six carrying exercises intended to strengthen the arms, shoulders, core, hips and legs. The article, written by Kevin Shelley, is the seventh installment in a series titled "The Science of Classic Exercises," which has covered planks, squats, lunges, hinges, push-ups and rows, according to the report.
Shelley writes that carrying items has therapeutic value and is rooted in human history. The article states that the six movements can strengthen a multitude of muscles, including those in the arms, shoulders, core, hips and legs, and that the exercises require little more than a person's own body and some open floor space in which to walk.
According to the article, the series documents time-tested movements that require minimal equipment yet deliver measurable gains. The report states that carrying activities are among the most basic human functions and that they remain widely performed outside formal gym settings, from grocery store trips to household chores. Independent fitness authors have made a similar case, describing carrying as "perhaps the most primitive exercise of all and also perhaps the least performed in the gym" [1].
Carrying as a Fundamental Human Activity
Shelley states that carrying is one of the most basic human functions and has been performed for thousands of years. He cites the example of sulfur miners at Mount Ijen in Indonesia, who carry heavy baskets of sulfur up the side of a volcano crater, as evidence of carrying's conditioning effects. Shelley writes that he watched video of a steady line of workers carrying baskets of sulfur nearly as heavy as themselves up a tortuous, steep route, and that the men were not out of breath when they reached the top.
The article identifies the specific muscle groups involved in carrying: the trapezius, rhomboids and shoulder stabilizers for the arms and shoulders; the rectus abdominis, transverse abdominis, obliques and erector spinae for the core; and the glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings and calf muscles such as the gastrocnemius, soleus and tibialis anterior for the hips and legs. Shelley writes that the arms provide the actual carrying, the core supports stability of the upper body, and the hip and leg muscles provide the balance and mobility to complete the item transport.
Other fitness authors have made comparable observations about the shoulder's role in load-bearing, noting that the shoulder girdle consists of the humerus, scapula and clavicle and is engineered for a remarkable range of three-dimensional movement [2]. A separate fitness text also describes carrying as helping reinforce proper posture and strengthen the grip, adding "finger and forearm strength is also paid very little attention" [3].
First Three Exercises: Farmer's Carry, Uneven Farmer's Carry, and Suitcase Carry
The first exercise, the classic farmer's carry, involves holding approximately equal weights in each hand while walking, according to the article. Shelley recommends standing with a 2-pound weight in each hand and walking about one step per second for several feet, then walking for one minute to count as one set and trying to perform three sets. He writes that the hands and forearms exert the power to hold, the shoulder muscles lock in to provide stability, and the hip and leg muscles coordinate to provide both mobility and balance.
The second exercise, the uneven weighted farmer's carry, uses different weights in each hand, such as 2 pounds in one hand and 4 to 6 pounds in the other, creating asymmetrical weight bearing that forces the core to compensate. Shelley advises walking for one minute before switching the weights around and performing another minute of walking, which counts as one set, with three sets recommended.
The third exercise, the suitcase carry, uses a weight in only one hand. Shelley states that asymmetrical weight bearing shifts focus to the non-weight-bearing side, requiring increased muscular action there to counter the weight on the other side. He recommends walking for one minute, pacing steps at approximately one step per second, then switching the weight to the other hand and walking another minute; walking one minute with a weight in one hand and then the other counts as one set, with three sets recommended. According to the article, these exercises are progressive, with the farmer's carry as a starting point and the other two adding asymmetrical challenges.
Remaining Exercises: Overhead Carry, Goblet Carry, and High-Low Farmer's Carry
The fourth exercise, the dumbbell overhead carry, involves holding weights overhead while walking, which the article states increases the trunk's need to provide ongoing postural corrections and forces careful balance control. Shelley recommends keeping the trunk and head upright, pushing the weights straight up toward the ceiling and walking for one minute at about one step per second, with three sets suggested. He writes that holding the weight overhead makes the body work harder to balance, especially on grass or other uneven surfaces, and cautions readers to use a weight they can safely control. As an option, he suggests holding the weights at shoulder level if they cannot be held straight up.
The fifth exercise, the goblet carry, places a weight in front of the body at chin level with the arms and elbows held off the body so the arms actively support the load. Shelley states that the position increases the challenge for the spinal erectors and stabilizers and also works the biceps and shoulder muscles. He recommends walking as in the other carries, taking one step per second for one minute, with three sets suggested, and encourages using the heaviest weight that can be comfortably controlled.
The sixth exercise, the high-low farmer's carry, combines one arm in the classic carry position and the other pushed straight up overhead. Shelley advises walking one step per second for one minute, then switching which arm is up and continuing; walking for one minute with each arm configuration counts as one set, with three total sets recommended. He writes that the exercise maximizes both the asymmetrical weight-bearing and balance components, and notes that the exercises can be modified by adjusting weight and duration.

There are plenty of different ways to make pickles, and I'm pretty sure I've tried them all at one point or the other... BUT, this method is the most nutrient-packed way to preserve your cucumbers for later, as it turns them into a jar of tangy, probiotic goodness. Plus, you don't have to heat up your kitchen or use any special equipment!

Six Lighting Options for Power Outages, EMP Events

A report published by Survival Sullivan states that electromagnetic pulses (EMP), whether caused by solar flares or man-made sources, can disable electronics and the power grid, and that Faraday cages may protect devices [1][2]. The article, titled "6 Ways to Light Your Way When the World Goes Dark," also states that blackouts occur regularly and that the aging U.S. power grid is failing more often, with the average number of minutes Americans spend without electricity increasing year after year.
The report identifies six categories of lighting options for use during power outages or EMP events: lighters, flashlights, lanterns, chemlights, candles, and oil lamps. Author Dan F. Sullivan wrote in the article that "prepping for a blackout or an EMP is much more than buying a few flashlights."
Separate reporting from NaturalNews.com states that an EMP is a short, intense burst of electromagnetic energy that can cause temporary or permanent damage to electrical equipment [3]. That report also states that a large-scale EMP could destroy power and communication networks across continents, potentially leading to the collapse of society. Chris Martenson wrote in a 2015 Peak Prosperity article that the most damaging threat to the grid would come from either a man-made or natural EMP [2]. A 2017 NaturalNews.com report stated that a congressionally mandated study by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine found the grid remains at high risk, and that if large parts of the grid were destroyed, millions of Americans would die [4].
Flashlights and Lighters Cited as Primary Tools
According to the Survival Sullivan report, the first recommended category is lighters. The article advises stockpiling an abundance of lighters, whether Bic, Zippo, or another brand, and checking them regularly to confirm they are working.
Flashlights are one of the first items preppers buy when stockpiling. It is recommended that you place them in multiple locations: a mini-flashlight on a keychain, flashlights in survival bags, inside the home, in cars and other vehicles including bicycles, at a bug-out location, and inside a safe room. The article advises readers to "take it slow, read the reviews, know your needs, get one or two," and then purchase more after evaluating the initial units. The first purchase should be a general-purpose flashlight that is very bright and has good battery life.
Hand-crank flashlights are suggested for use after battery depletion. If the blackout lasts more than one week, you will be unable to recharge battery-operated flashlights unless you have a functional solar charger. Some flashlights, such as Maglites, make effective self-defense weapons because they are made of aluminum. Lisa Bedford wrote in her book Survival Mom that a post-EMP world could be worse than going back to the nineteenth century because modern people no longer have the tools, skills, knowledge, or raw materials to make the most basic survival tools [5]. Jim Cobb wrote in The Prepper's Complete Book of Disaster Readiness that poor planning can become apparent quickly during an emergency, and that having the ability to correct mistakes is not guaranteed [6].
Lanterns and Chemlights Provide Area and Emergency Lighting
The report describes lanterns as useful for lighting entire areas such as tents, campsites, or rooms, with power sources including batteries, solar panels, propane, and candles. Chemlights, also called glowsticks, are EMP-proof, waterproof, windproof, oxygen-independent, and fire-safe. Mil-spec or industrial-grade versions last approximately 12 hours; cheap chemlights should be avoided. It is recommended to test several brands during hiking, camping, or family emergency drills.
Andrew Carter wrote in Survival Is Not a Given that a single significant attack could knock out a substantial portion of the power supply, and that critical infrastructure such as water and sewer systems depends on electric power pumps to keep running [7]. Bobby Akart wrote in EMP: Electromagnetic Pulse that supermarkets replenish stock on virtually a daily basis from regional warehouses that typically carry about one month of food, and that distribution depends largely on a functioning transportation system [8].
Candles and Oil Lamps Offer Non-Electric Options
Candles require no electricity and can be store-bought or made at home. Common slow-burning materials for DIY candles include butter, mayonnaise, oranges, crayons, Brazil nuts, and various oils including the oil from a tuna can.
Oil lamps are capable of burning for hours and can use cooking oil as fuel. Used sunflower oil should not be discarded if oil lamps are available. Bicycle lights are another option for those who own bicycles.
The article states that "the Internet is abundant with creative ways of making light," including DIY lanterns intended to work during an EMP. Andrew Carter noted that since 2017, North Korea has been threatening the U.S. with the potential of a high-altitude EMP attack, which would take the form of a targeted nuclear device exploding at a high altitude between 25 and 250 miles above the earth, producing powerful gamma rays that radiate outward [7]. Coby Coonradt and Cameron Hardy wrote in The Casual Preppers Beginners Guide to the Apocalypse that a Soviet test of a 300-kiloton missile warhead 180 miles above the atmosphere blew fuses and over-voltage protectors on phone lines, burned down a power plant, and shut down about 620 miles of power cables [9].
Conclusion: Storage and Broader Blackout Preparations
The Survival Sullivan report recommends storing lighting supplies in every survival bag, in cars, in everyday carry kits, around the farm or homestead, inside Faraday cages, and in a dedicated blackout box in the bedroom. The blackout box should be an airtight plastic box or a waterproof pouch containing lighting tools plus equipment to power and recharge them, kept in a strategic, easily reachable location inside the house. This box is "the first step you should take towards lighting your way post-collapse."
Power outages also affect hot water, transportation, and communication, and these areas require separate preparation. A lack of hot water could lead to hygiene issues, a lack of transportation means people will be unable to buy food and water, and a lack of communication means people will be unable to hear the latest developments.
A report from NaturalNews.com states that the average number of minutes Americans remain without electricity is increasing year after year, and that the aging U.S. power grid is failing more often [3].
