CBS ignored Ron Paul at debate, now shoves competitor to get a shot

By Michelle Fields - The Daily Caller

Seems like CBS is having a change of heart since Saturdays debate.
Three days ago CBS hosted an hour-long foreign policy debate during which Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul had a mere 90 seconds of air time. Less than a week later, the network is muscling competitors out of the way just to get a camera shot of the Texas congressman.

Bloomberg’s latest poll numbers show Paul in a statistical tie for the lead in Iowa, causing even the not-so-Ron-Paul-friendly CBS to declare that his candidacy has moved into the “top tier.”

Today during Rep. Paul’s appearance at a Cato Institute conference, one CBS cameraman was so determined to get a shot of the GOP candidate that he shoved Daily Caller videographer Direna Cousins. Paul stopped his interview to tell the CBS reporter to stop behaving so aggressively

Following Iowa Surge, Ron Paul Polls Second In New Hampshire

Congressman also only GOP candidate to lead Obama among Independent voters

Steve Watson
November 16, 2011

Following Tuesdays revelation that Ron Paul is tied for first place In Iowa, it has also emerged that the Congressman is now polling in second place in New Hampshire, another of the key early voting states.
A separate poll also reveals that Paul is the only Republican candidate leading President Obama among independents.

A Bloomberg News New Hampshire poll released Wednesday shows Paul in second place with 17 percent, beating former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and pizza pusher Herman Cain, who scored 11 percent and 7 percent respectively.
Mitt Romney still holds a strong lead with 40 percent of the votes.

Given that Romney is so strong in New Hampshire, and has made it the focal point of his campaign, a second place finish for Paul in the primary, scheduled for January 10, would be an extremely strong showing.

The Bloomberg article on the poll also highlights:
Paul’s contact rate with voters is the only one that matches Romney’s, at 52 percent in New Hampshire. The rate at which his campaign is able to bring those likely voters into the fold is 22 percent, half that of Romney at 44 percent.

“A lot of people aren’t giving him the press that he needs,” said Kristine Haase, 26, a customer service representative in rural New Hampshire. “There’s more people supporting him then they really know.”
As we reported yesterday, despite being given just 89 seconds of speaking time during Saturday’s Republican debate, Ron Paul is in a dead heat with fellow top tier candidates Cain, Romney and Gingrich for the highly influential Iowa caucuses. Paul placed second, just one percentage point behind Cain, according to another Bloomberg News poll.

The poll shows Cain at 20 percent, Paul at 19 percent, Romney at 18 percent and Gingrich at 17 percent.

Paul is undoubtedly in the strongest position going into the race, because his support is “more solidified than his rivals,” a key factor given that 60 per cent of respondents in the poll said they could still be persuaded to change their vote.

32 per cent of Paul’s backers say they are sticking with the Congressman, whereas only 25 per cent of Romney supporters and 17 per cent of Gingrich voters say the same.

In another newly released poll, from Public Policy Polling, Paul leads President Obama 48 to 39 percent among independent voters in a hypothetical match up.

The poll also indicates that Paul is the only GOP candidate to better Obama where independent voters are concerned.

“This is yet another poll that clearly shows how competitive Ron Paul is against the sitting President,” said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton. “Dr. Paul is making strides not just among Republicans, but independent voters as well. This broad base of increasing support proves that the American people are looking for conviction instead of the typical status quo rhetoric being offered by establishment candidates.”

Paul’s campaign team have been pushing hard in the early states, setting aside a $2 million advertising buy, while the Congressman has made many visits to the states over the past few months.

Paul has by far the most loyal grass roots support out of all the candidates In Iowa, registering the most campaign donations out of all the potential GOP nominees.

Federal Elections Commission data filed in mid-October shows that Paul has received over $77,000 in contributions from Iowa so far this election cycle, a full $10,000 more than Mitt Romney.

Indeed, the only candidate to have raised more in Iowa is the incumbent President, who has hit almost $200,000 in contributions.

Paul sits well ahead of the rest of the GOP field, having raised more than double the contributions of his next closet rival – Michelle Bachmann.

In August Paul came a close second in the Iowa GOP straw poll, capturing a commanding 44% of the over 6000 votes cast.
The tussle for New Hampshire may ultimately be decided by funding. While Romney has the distinct advantage, Paul raised $8 million in the 3rd Quarter, $5 million more than Herman Cain.

The Congressman himself has said that he feels he needs to win one of the three early primaries and place second in one of them for his campaign to continue with momentum.

“I would be disappointed with third.” Paul recently told Fox News, adding “If I come in third I’m still alive, but I think I better do first or second in a couple of those. I have to do well in January.”

On Tuesday, Ron Paul appeared on CNBC’s The Kudlow Report to discuss, amongst other things, his recent strong showing in the latest poll out of Iowa.

Ron Paul Leads Obama Among Independents New Poll Shows

Paul only candidate in GOP field to best the President

Nov. 16, 2011, 10:52 a.m. EST

LAKE JACKSON, Texas, Nov 16, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- In a new Public Policy Poll, 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul bests President Obama 48 to 39 percent among independent voters. The poll also showed Paul as the only Republican candidate leading President Obama among independents.

"This is yet another poll that clearly shows how competitive Ron Paul is against the sitting President," said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton. "Dr. Paul is making strides not just among Republicans, but independent voters as well. This broad base of increasing support proves that the American people are looking for conviction instead of the typical status quo rhetoric being offered by establishment candidates."

These results follow an earlier Bloomberg News poll showing Paul in a statistical first place finish in Iowa, a key early voting state. Furthermore, a late October CNN/Time poll showed him in the top three in the key states of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina.

Ron Paul Continues Iowa Surge

New poll puts Paul within striking distance of lead

LAKE JACKSON, Texas - In a new Iowa State University/Gazette/ KCRG poll, 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul remains within striking distance of the lead among likely Iowa caucus voters. Paul takes 20.4 percent of the vote, within the margin of error of pizza baron Herman Cain who is tentatively holding the lead at 24.5 percent.

“These numbers are a confirmation of Congressman Paul’s principled message,” said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton. “The American people are ready for real change in the way things are done in Washington, and Ron Paul is the only candidate who will fundamentally change the status quo, by offering serious cuts in spending, bringing our troops home, and restoring our economy to bring prosperity back to America.”

This latest Iowa poll comes on the heels of a Bloomberg News poll showing Paul in a statistical tie for first place in Iowa and a strong second place in New Hampshire, and a Public Policy Poll in which he was the only Republican candidate to best Obama among independent voters (48 to 39 percent). The Iowa State University poll also notes that Paul gets nearly twice as much support as the rest of the field from those in the lower income brackets.

Pat Buchanan on Iran, the GOP and Ron Paul

Pat Buchanan writes
:

Is a vote for the Republican Party in 2012 a vote for war?

Is a vote for Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich a vote for yet another unfunded war of choice, this time with a nation, Iran, three times as large and populous as Iraq?

Mitt says that if elected he will move carriers into the Persian Gulf and “prepare for war.” Newt is even more hawkish. America should continue “taking out” Iran’s nuclear scientists — i.e., assassinating them — but military action will probably be needed.
Newt is talking up uber-hawk John Bolton for secretary of state…

And where is the hard evidence Iran is acquiring nukes?

The U.S. intelligence community declared in December 2007, with “high confidence,” that Iran was no longer seeking nuclear weapons. It has never rescinded that declaration.

And there is no conclusive evidence in that media-hyped report last week from the International Atomic Energy Agency that Iran is for certain building nuclear weapons. Indeed, that report was exposed as the work of incompetents within hours…
Are we being lied and stampeded into yet another war by the same propagandists who gave us the yellow-cake-from-Niger forgeries?

Ahmadinejad is a lame duck with less than two years left in his term… Told that the IAEA said Iran was actively pursuing nuclear weapons, Ahmadinejad laughed: “The Iranian nation is wise. It won’t build two bombs against 20,000 (nuclear) bombs you (Americans) have.”

Does he not have a point? How would an Iranian bomb secure Iran, when Israel’s nuclear arsenal would be put on a hair trigger, and Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Egypt would then rush to get their own bombs?

In that South Carolina debate, Ron Paul, the one person there proven right on Iraq, was given less than 90 seconds to speak.
Under the Constitution, said Paul, no president has the right to launch an unprovoked attack on Iran without congressional authorization.

Before America goes to war with Iran, let Congress, whose members are forever expressing their love for the Constitution, follow it, and vote on war with Iran. And before we go to the polls in 2012, let’s find out if the GOP is becoming again the same old War Party that bankrupted the nation.

Does Ron Paul Have the Strongest Ground Game in Iowa?

by admin on November 17, 2011

A Bloomberg poll out Tuesday put Ron Paul in a statistical dead heat with Herman Cain, Rick Perry, and Newt Gingrich among likely Iowa caucus goers. But in an indication of Ron Paul's organizational strength, the survey also found that two-thirds of those surveyed said they had been contacted by the Ron Paul campaign through email, direct mail, telephone, door knocking, or by meeting the candidate in person.

Less than half said they had been contacted by the campaigns of other frontrunners in the state -- only 46 percent had been contacted by Romney, 41 percent by Cain, and 29 percent by Gingrich.

"The Ron Paul organization has not stopped working for the last four years," observes Trudy Caviness, who is a member of the Iowa Republican State Central Committee. "We've got five people on our state central committee that are Ron Paul supporters."

By contrast, she says, "The Mitt Romney staff has changed from who they were four years ago whereas the Ron Paul staff, the leadership, is the same. His people have continued to work. And they work a lot with young people."

The Ron Paul campaign does not have the highest number of paid staffers in Iowa -- there are six -- but the campaign's strength can be better understood by the legions of "dedicated" volunteers, as described by one top Republican in the state who declined to call that dedication "organizational" strength.

Ron Paul's Deputy National Campaign Manager, Dimitri Kesari, can't give an exact figure on the number of volunteers in Iowa, but says that compared to Ron Paul's 2008 run, "It's more professional this time. The whole team national on down has more campaign, structured experience, more knowledge and know-how." Furthermore, he says, they're focused on doing well in the Hawkeye State.

A new Iowa State University/Gazette/KCRG poll of 1,256 registered Iowa voters, out Thursday, has Paul once again near the front of the pack at 20.5 percent, second to Cain at 24.5 percent. Romney trails in third place at 16.3 percent.

"Iowa is a big grassroots state," says Kesari. "Iowans like to see the candidates up close and personal. It's not the biggest TV market -- they want to meet their candidates, their volunteers. Our strategy is to have lots of volunteers. Ron Paul has been traveling across the state meeting people in places big and small."

Ron Paul has spent 34 days in Iowa, behind Herman Cain's 35 days, Gingrich's 47, Bachmann's 56, and Santorum's 74.
Kesari scoffs when asked whether Paul has an upper limit of support in the Hawkeye state.

"Back when Reagan was running against Jimmy Carter, they said he's too conservative, he's from California. One of the biggest things said was that he can't win. There is a similar dynamic here. People say Ron's too conservative, he can't win, he has an upper limit. We're running against Barack Obama. This could be a history making race again."
