Three suspects arrested, are jailed without bail

HOLLYWOOD -- A woman who fell asleep on Hollywood beach was awakened by three attackers who beat and raped her early Wednesday, police said.

The woman, identified only as being in her 30s, fought back by punching the men and slashing them with a broken bottle, deeply gashing the face of one of her attackers.

"She was certainly courageous," Police Capt. Tony Rode said. "Needless to say, she was no match for these three punks."

The news of Wednesday's rape was especially jarring to many Hollywood officials who have spent millions trying to convert the beach into a tourist and family destination.

"I am still shaking after hearing about this," said City Commissioner Cathy Anderson, whose district covers the beach. "This thing does not happen in our beach."

Police said that at the time of the 3:30 a.m. attack, the beach is normally patrolled only by officers who drive in their cruisers along the Broadwalk.

The woman told police she left her home and was sitting in the sand along the shoreline. She then inadvertently fell asleep. It is the same beach where two of the men used to sleep after their evening shifts as dishwashers, their employer said on Thursday.

Police arrested Armando Moncadaramos, who turned 20 the day of the attack, Hever Ramos, 21, and Cesar Amador, 21. They are each listed as living above a popular beachside restaurant less than a mile from the crime scene.

According to police, the woman said she woke to find that Amador had pinned her down while Ramos tried to sexually assault her.

She grabbed a broken bottle and hacked at Ramos, cutting his face and chest, Rode said. While Ramos stepped away wounded, Rode said, Moncadaramos told her to calm down. But then he, too, began sexually assaulting her, striking the woman repeatedly on her mouth, according to a police report.

Crying and still trying to fend off her attackers, the woman managed to escape and flag down a couple walking along the Broadwalk. A police dog later found Amador hiding near the 300 block of Fillmore Street, police said.

On the beach near Virginia Street, Ramos ran into the water and started swimming, but soon turned around as another officer with a dog approached him. The dogs that found the men did not attack them, Rode said.

The victim and Ramos were treated at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood. In his police mug shot, Ramos has what appear to be several cuts on his forehead and both cheeks.

Police arrested Moncadaramos late Wednesday afternoon at the tiny apartment he shared with Ramos above the Sushi-Thai on the Beach restaurant. The two men worked there as dishwashers.

"The police kept coming here asking for [Moncadaramos]. They said they wanted to talk to him about his car," said the restaurant's sushi chef, Nu Boonkua. "When he got here, they were all over him."

The woman positively identified the three men, according to an arrest report. All three were denied bail on first-degree sexual battery charges during a hearing on Thursday. The Broward County Public Defender's office is representing them.

Records show only Amador has a criminal background. He was arrested by the Seminole Tribe Police Department on March 2005 and charged with lewd and lascivious behavior with a 16-year-old and indecent exposure. He was sentenced in May 2005 to two months and 17 days in jail after pleading no contest.

Boonkua, the chef, said Moncadaramos began working as a dishwasher a year ago and was a dependable worker, toiling each day on the 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. shift.

Boonkua said he thinks Moncadaramos initially lived in Hialeah with a cousin.

About six months ago, Moncadaramos introduced Ramos to the restaurant's management as a brother who arrived recently from Honduras, said owner Sarasern Mongkolsindhu.

"He sounded like he really needed the work," the owner said on Thursday.

The two men used to commute to work from Hialeah in Moncadaramos' late-model Chevrolet, which had mechanical problems and at some point became inoperable. Mongkolsindhu said he found the men sleeping on the beach one morning about four months ago and offered them a place to live.

"I only charged them for electricity and water," he said.

The two lived in one of the apartment's two bedrooms. The owner closed off the second room because of heavy roof damage after Hurricane Wilma.

Employers said they knew little about the two workers. Most of the time the two spoke only to each other. Moncadaramos knew only a few words in English. Ramos spoke none at all.

Police arrest three in rape of woman who dozed off on beach

Three men have been charged in the rape of a woman who had fallen asleep on Hollywood beach, police said Thursday.

The woman had been sitting on the sand when she dozed off. She woke up about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday to find one man holding her down while another tried to rape her, said Hollywood police spokesman Capt. Tony Rode.

''She was very courageous and didn't go down without a fight,'' Rode said of the woman, who is in her 30s.

During the struggle, the woman found a piece of broken glass in the sand and slashed one of the attackers several times in the face and chest, police said.

He stopped and the other man released her, but then a third man appeared and raped her, Rode said.

When the woman tried to resist, he punched her in the mouth.

After the attack, the men ran south on the beach. The woman found a couple strolling along the shore and they called police.

Rode said police found the three suspects on the beach, north of Hollywood Boulevard. They ran away after being told to stop, but police caught up with them, and the woman identified them as her attackers.

Arrested were Hever Ramos, 26; Cesar Luis Amador, 26; and Armando Moncadaramos, 20. They were taken to the Broward County Jail.

Rode said the woman was brave to fight back, but warned that is not always the best option, especially if the attacker has a weapon.

I made a quick call the the detention center holding these guys. The lady ran a check on each name.

She said that each was NO BOND but there was NO IMMIGRATION HOLD on any of these suspects.

I asked her if they had been screened by Immigration and Customs and she said "I'm sure they have been" so I said "Each of these men is a legal immigrant or US Citizen?" she said yes.

I am not certain this woman really knew what she was talking about and may have been mistaken.

If these three were legal us citizens or legal immigrants it is likely they would have been given some bond or a high bond.

ICE is very aware of the explosive politics around this situation and goes quiete a lot of the time.

Not sure what to try next.

(CBS4 News) HOLLYWOOD, FL. The victim of a gang rape in Hollywood Beach this week wanted to get her story out and help other victims, so she spoke exclusively to CBS4 News.

The woman told CBS4’s Joan Murray about her traumatizing experience and how she fought off her attackers in a place she is used to spending plenty of time at.

“Two-thirty in the morning, four o’clock in the morning, three o’clock in the afternoon, this is my home,” the victim said. “This is a safe, safe place to be.”

But unfortunately the victim, whose identity we are not revealing, fell asleep on the sand in the early morning hours. When she woke up, she says one man was behind her holding her firmly, while another was on top and another was to her left.

However, despite her fear, she tried her best to ward off the attackers, using a broken bottle she reached for in the sand.
“Flailing, and it was literally in my hand, and when I came up, I slashed and I slashed, and I brought it to the floor and I brought it to the back and I didn’t stop until I got him off of me,” she said, as she motioned with a broken bottle in her hand.

Hollywood Police say the attack happened by the shoreline around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday. They say, Cesar Luis Amador, 21, physically restrained her while another suspect, Hever Ramos, 21, committed sexual battery. Armando Moncadaramos was the third suspect to be arrested and charged with sexual battery in connection with the rape.

Police say that they were able to catch the three suspects after the victim went to seek help from a couple that was nearby at the beach and 911 was called. She was able to identify the suspects.

The suspects are being held in jail without bond.

The victim wants to give a special thanks to that couple that helped her in her time of crisis.

These reports are coming in fast and furious from around the country. I think things are getting out of control fast.

Alleged rape in Hollywood considered isolated


Beach is safe, residents, civic leaders say

HOLLYWOOD -- Two days after police say a woman was raped and beaten on Hollywood beach, residents, visitors and civic leaders said they were shocked but did not see a need to wage a full-scale war against crime.

"We may get a graffiti here and there and a couple of car burglaries, but we're certainly not being rampaged by crime," said Debra Case, owner of beachside Ocean Alley Restaurant and president of the Hollywood Beach Business Association.

Statistics provided by the Hollywood Police Department show Wednesday's incident was the sixth sexual assault reported on Hollywood beach since January 2005.

Police could not immediately provide details of those incidents, but they said this week's assault was by far the most violent in recent history.

"Sexual assaults happen occasionally, but none this brutal," said Capt. Tony Rode.

The top crime category in the beach area is car burglaries, with 79 reported between January and July, according to police.

"Something like that is going to happen anywhere, even in Rome where the Pope lives," said Mario Boylan, a North Carolina visitor drinking a beer on the Broadwalk on Friday.

Investigators say a woman, described only as being in her 30s, told police she fell asleep on the shoreline at about 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Three men, who lived above a nearby beach restaurant, sexually attacked her and beat her, according to police. The woman claims she tried to fend off the men with a broken bottle she found next to her. Police arrested Armando Moncadaramos, who turned 20 the day of the attack, Hever Ramos, 21, and Cesar Amador, 21.

A spokesman with the Broward Public Defender's Office said the men were still in the process of being assigned defense attorneys. Police and prosecutors offered no new details on Friday.

Around the time the attack is said to have occurred, the beach is usually patrolled only by officers who drive along the Broadwalk. Nobody patrols the sands, said police spokesman Detective Carlos Negron.

Meanwhile, on Friday the news of the attack was still the talk among the people who live, work or play on the beach.

"It probably gives the city and the beach a black eye, but I think most of us feel it was an isolated incident," said Ron Clasky, president of the Hollywood Beach Civic Association.

Rape survivor refuses to be labeled a victim

HOLLYWOOD · A 39-year-old woman who police say fiercely resisted the three men charged with raping her last week on Hollywood Beach insisted Monday, "I am not a victim."

"I fought back. I wasn't going to allow them to take away my beach. This is my home," said the woman, who did not want her name published. "Those guys picked the wrong girl."

On Monday, her jaw still slightly swollen, she sat outside her Hollywood Beach home and recounted what police say was the most violent incident on the beach in recent memory.

She said she walked to the beach early Wednesday morning to relax and meditate, as she has routinely done for the past year since moving to the area.

"I was doing what anyone else would've been doing if they lived here. Look out there," she said, pointing to the shoreline. "That's my back yard."

She added that she would no longer visit the beach alone at night.

But that night she fell asleep next to a lifeguard stand, as she's done many times before, she said.

About an hour later, around 3:30 a.m., she awoke as two men held her down while trying to rape her, she said.

She kicked and screamed and tried to grab anything to defend herself. That's when she saw a brown, broken bottle sticking up from the sand about an arm's reach away.

"I think karma brought that bottle to me," she said. "I have never seen a bottle on Hollywood Beach, and to have one right next to me is something I can only attribute to good karma."

She managed to cut the face and torso of one of the men, she said. A third man then punched her face and sexually assaulted her. She continued to fight and soon managed to escape. As she ran from the beach, she saw a couple walking down the Broadwalk. They helped her call 911.

Within minutes, police rounded up two of the men after using police dogs to track them down. The third man was captured hours later.

Police arrested Armando Moncadaramos, who turned 20 the day of the attack, Hever Ramos, 21, and Cesar Amador, 21. The men, two of whom work as dishwashers at a Hollywood Beach sushi restaurant, were being held without bail at Broward County's main jail. All three are charged with first-degree sexual battery.

A spokesman with the Broward Public Defender's Office said a judge would likely assign attorneys to the men this week.

On Monday, the woman said she wanted to tell her story after reading comments from readers posted on Sun-Sentinel.com about the attack.

She said many of the comments speculated that she was drunk or homeless, but she said she was neither. She also said she was angry that many remarked about the race and nationality of the men.

"To all you bigots, I say this isn't about race, or economic class, or someone's nationality," she said. "This is about a rape."

The woman said years of treatment she's received as a long-term sexual abuse victim have helped her cope with last week's attack.

"I am already a survivor," she said.
