I found the four translations of the "Star Spangled Banner" in Spanish on the State Department website that I heard about on TV. I cannot determine if it is available in other languages. I question the need to translate our anthem at all. Do other countries distribute translations of their national songs in English?

Gee, what if a fellow Spaniard student is doing a comparative study in National Anthems? Should he learn English fluently just to translate a couple of verses?

Welcome Oblivion & Josequia, I have a few questions for both of you.
Oblivion, I caught that you were going to college, and going to take a test about Plato, let me say that is wonderful for you, that you are going to college, education is a wonderful thing that not all citizens here are able to afford for their children or for their own self. Be proud that you are in this wonderful country and can take advantages of all things offered to you. while you do that though remember there are american citizens who's families have been here for generations, who because they are white lower to middle class citizens cannot get any help at all to put their children through college even though they break their backs working, paying taxes, so that minorites and even illegal citizens here CAN, send their children to college because of these undervalued, proud American citizens. Can you not understand some of the anger building for these citizens to see illegals marching in their streets carrying not this country's flag, but their homeland's flag,that would not allow them to protest in their own country's streets.? I have brown skin to, I am part native american and Irish, no one has ever said to me I should have been born in Ireland. I think you are having a hard time deciding which country you owe your allegience to Oblivian, there should be no difficulty in that, you were born here in the US. I am part this and part that but inside I am all 100% American! We don't have to apologise for where we were born, only feel free to be proud of that heritage, you had the opportunity to be born in the best country in the world be proud of that. Oblivion, and Josequia, the American's are not against immigration, we are against illegal immigration, we have laws like any country they should be respected otherwise our children are no longer going to have a birthright to be proud of, we will lose our soveringty and be like any other 3rd world country. Our ancestors fought and died to keep this country free of foreign invaders, we cannot let their blood shed be in vain! I am glad that you both are one of us and hope you are glad of that to. Josequia, you have friends who are illegal's, it is good they have you for a friend, even so, they are breaking our laws they know that and you know that, if they are forced to go home that is not your fault, you should have no divided loyaty, your first loyatly should be your country, maybe if they go home they can then come in the legal way and then not have to worry about losing friends. Josequia, and Oblivion, one more question, think carefully, do you really want to see your country invaded by millions and millions of people until we are ran over and ran down and have nothing left to give to anybody? I have to say, maybe one generation of being here is not yet long enough to have the american pride running though your veins like it does most of us who have been here as far back as as we know. The National Anthem is sacred to us as Mexico's is to its people, I don't feel it is right to change or make fun of either but, I can understand the bad feelings of the Americans who have had that version of the so called Spanish American National Anthem "thingy"shoved down their throats in the last few weeks can't you under the circumstances? If you can't maybe you need to look inside yourself, decide just where your loyalties really are and take a stand on them , get off the fence so to speak! Remember, if you don't stand for something, you will fall for just about anything! Frankly, I don't care about the lyrics of other countries' national anthems. BUT I DO CARE ABOUT MY COUNTRY"S NATIONAL ANTHEM! Our national anthem is a symbol of our nation, as is our beautiful flag. When someone changes it or mocks it, I get ticked off!! It wasn't meant to be translated into another language unless someone wants to understand what the words mean. The Spanish version that was on all the blogs and TV & radio stations recently was a slap in our faces, as far as I'm concerned. It was as if the illegals and the composer and the producer were saying: "This is how much power we have, we can rewrite
the national anthem into what we want it to be."
Although it's true that the tune was based on an old English drinking song, the WORDS (lyrics) were written by an American as he watched a battle ensue during the War of 1812. The words mean something, they don't need changing!

Oblivion, you scare me. How many generations do your people have to be here before you consider yourself an AMERICAN, and not a Mexican-American or an Hispanic-American? Do you think Mexicans call themselves Spanish-Mexicans or French-Mexicans? Hell no! Only in this country do people feel the ... what? ... the "need" or the "privilege" or the stupidity to call themselves hyphenated-Americans.

I am not in the mood to be insulted because of my roots I hardly know about.

Exactly, Americans are not in the mood to #1 be insulted by having our National Anthem changed, #2 be insulted by immigrants legal or illegals coming to our country and demanding change. Our childrens American roots are what they should be learning in school, it is up to parents to teach their ancestry to their children, not the schools. People have given their lives to preserve our country and all of a sudden a group of protesters march down our streets and not ask but DEMAND the same rights as we have, can you tell me what is going through their minds to think just because they are doing jobs "Americans won't do"( which is a crock) they can order American citizens and our government around? Are we expected to turn the other cheek, when we are called gringo, see our flag dishonored ,threaten us with boycotts, walk out of schools to protest, (I don't know how things are now but if my kids would have walked out of school for any reason they could have faced suspension,)are we to be expected to be blind to this? This country has already bent over backwards, we see signs in Spanish where we never did before, now you have to press one for Spanish when you want to speak to someone on the phone, another thing that Amerians did not have to do, now it is PC to be bilingual and it is part of our children's curriculum, in fact there are many jobs Americans can't have if they are not bilingual....is this fair to Americans? No! I think Americans have done enough, including sending millions of dollars to Mexico, and other countries... Americans are paying for that through taxes, or does Mexico and other countries think the United States pulls it out of a hat....If anyone wants to live here they have to assimilate to our ways, not the other way around. Sing our National Anthem in English with your heart in it, when you see an American flag pass in a parade instead of sitting there with a beer in hand, stand up, get a lump in your throat and be proud that you have been blessed to be in this country. You can't stomp your feet like little kids, and demand that we change to suit your needs. America has done more than it's share to help other countries, more than any job, they think they do here to deserve automatic citizenship.

That doesn't mean they deserve it more than I do. I have seen some of my fellow Americans who rejoice in the evils of inner city life and could care less about education. I, the third generation of a Mexican illegal grandfather, rejoice in education. I am not saying that I deserve it more than they do. That is why you should not even bring up the fact that some that have been living here for decades don't get the chance to educate themselves. And I am not grateful for this country, since it wasn't an inanimate entity that gave me what I have. Giving credit to a corrupt system for what I have is heresy.

Nope. I have already realized that neither Mexico or the US or any country is where I belong. I belong somehwere else with whoever willed that I come into existence.

Our ancestors were not that holy anyways. Truth: they had to get rid of Native Americans to pursue their evil goals and some believed that slavery was the way to go. Truly an exemplar of morality there. That's why I don't put anyone on a pedestal, because all of us are evil.

Anyways, life is short, full of suffering. But that is the point before we come back to our original homes, for those who care at all about spiritual matters. No need to freak out. Not your will, but His.

If you arn't grateful for the privilege of living in this county then perhaps you would be happier in the land of you illegal grandfather.
The attitude you have about the United States is the same all the protesters are showing us. The reason you are here is because your grandfather came illegaly, ( if he hadn't perhaps your parents would have) and you were born here. This kind of attitude is exactly what we have to look forward with the next generations of illegals born here. This country DID give you opportunities that you seem to be partaking in...what other than a rotten attitude can you say you are giving back to it. If your parents have the same attitude about America, I made my point about illegal immigration, assimilating to our way of life means nothing to you, you just want to take control of what you THINK belongs to you.

This attitude by Oblivion and others like him/her is exactly why I lost sympathy for pretty much all of the illegals. That "you owe me" attitude sticks in my craw.

Oblivion, evidently you are having a personal crisis in your life, and cannot figure out who you are and where you do belong. I am sorry that your life is in such a state, be careful this can lead to depression, I wonder why you chose the name of "oblivion" in the first place it sets off little warning bells in the back of my mind that you may be fighting some form of depression in your life. No, I am not a doctor making a diagnosis here, I am though, a registered nurse who has worked in mental health facilities in the past and know the warning signs to look for. One definition of oblivion is

No, I wouldn't say that other people deserve to go to college anymore then you do, though I do feel you should have some gratitude for the american citizens who do work and pay taxes so that you can go to college even if their own kids cannot afford to go.
What is wrong with a little gratitude Oblivion, if you don't feel any loyalties or patriotism for this, your country, then you could feel a little gratefullness for the advantages you do get by living here. I am sure we all know, if you were living in Mexico, you would not be taking a test on Plato soon right? Otherwise your grandfather would not have fled to this great country so that you, his grandaughter might have greater advantages then he had. If I am wrong about you, I do apologise, I just get the impression you feel like the world owes you and that my dear Oblivion, is simply not the truth.
anyway, I don't think anyone here can say much of anything to change the way you feel(only you can do that) if you don't feel the great pride most of Americans feel for out great country, then there is not much we can do to make you feel that pride, you either have it or you don't. I hope that someday, Oblivion, you do find the answers you seem to be searching for, and the right country to give you that great sense of belonging to for otherwise, I feel you will go through your life without a sense of belonging to anything and that is a sad state to be in for sure! I can feel some of your pain oblivion, nothing I have said here has been said to denigrate or hurt you in any way, I do hope you find yourself and have the wonderful life you do deserve to have.
