WELL, IT LOOKS LIKE MINIMAL IMMIGRATION IS THE CONSTANT WINNER. This is a great straw poll, W.

What it tells me is that Americans have "grown" in their illegal immigration knowledge. In the beginning, it was just stop illegal immigration. Today, after we realized how immense this problem really is, it is minimal immigration and/or moratorium. This is the pulse of the nation, like it or not.

It reflects basic human nature: When things get too stressful, YOU STOP, and take a breather.

BTW, WELCOME TO CRAZIEREDHEAD, MAXSLADY, AND ALL THE NEWCOMERS! This is a safe place to SCREAM out your frustrations and to learn so much that you will never hear from the MSM. WELCOME!!!

I think we can assimilate the current tsunami of LEGAL immigrants, in a generation or two, IF we:

    1.)stop illegal immigration

2.)practice Attrition Through Enforcement to get the 20 million illegals already here to leave

3.)stop legal immigration altogether for about ten years and then open it up again at a trickle near zero after that.

4.)set up Americanization programs through schools and/or community groups to actively encourage assimilation

If we did these things, I think we could assimilate them in a generation or two.

She stopped working and stayed behind with her husband until his visa expired and ended up being caught by ICE and deported. That made me angry in the sense that even though she became illegal after the 60 days after her visa expired, she was not working or driving and wanted to stay with her husband yet illegals from other countries who break not only immigrantion law but work and drive illegally are allowed to remain in many cases.

Nursing is not a job that Americans won't do! that's a ridiculous statement. There are MANY MANY people right here in the U.S. that want to be nurses. This line that they do jobs that Americans won't do is bull crap.

Also, if your nursing friend's visa was expired, she should have been deported. They chose to stay here, both the husband the wife could have gone back. They weren't starving in Canada, they just chose not to obey our laws. Go back and reapply.

Our opponents use the historical accident of demographics to charge us with racism whenever anyone argues that perhaps immigration levels are too high. All the pro-immigrant contingents seem to be cross pollinating each other on that point. From Mexico to India, the refrain is, "Your ancestors were allowed in, how dare you slam the door on us? It must because of the color of our skin, there can be no other reason." Of course there are dozens of reasons why we may need to rethink our policy on immigration that have nothing to do with race. Some in Mexico actually lay claim to part of our country, and India views themselves as the next world leaders, whose destiny it is to push us aside even in our own land. (I am referring to the sentiments of their activists here, not necessarily all their citizens). Some Muslim extremists will not give up the notion that their rules and customs must be made to prevail here, and some of them believe that violence is justified to that end.

    What to do?

Well, arguments need to be based on common sense. They need to be based on numbers, quality of life, and the duty of a government to act in the interests of its citizens (what else is government for?).

Take a look at NumbersUSA (.com and .net). Sure, they get mud slung at them too. But is there any place on their web site where someone from outside can post a racial epithet or a diatribe, and it sits there for all the world to see until a moderator happens to notice it? Also look at the slick front end. Very polished, like Time or Newsweek. Could we automate searches and sweep for keywords to prevent mischief? Whenever we don't catch bad speech in time, we come off looking bad and the opposition makes hay out of it. That's completely unfair of course - some bozo's running mouth does not become the official stance of this organization, but you'd think it did judging from what the pro-illegals make of it.

We also need to establish a better, more precise, set of metrics for assessing the impact of immigration, both legal and illegal. We gather a lot of data in this country, what are we really seeing? Are the schools perpetually overcrowded in some areas? Are ESL needs draining funds away from music, art, and/or field trips? What about crime, who's doing it and why? Are the lower rungs of the economic ladder still open to citizens, or do they have to speak a foreign language to get a job? Are our college graduates and experienced professionals experiencing unemployment or underemployment, and why? What does it mean when jobs that don't require college have graduates filling them? Are hospitals closing their emergency rooms? What are the obstacles to young citizens just starting out? Can they find decent paying jobs, can they get health insurance, are they safe from crime? A lot of crime is done by people near the bottom of the socio-economic ladder who despair of surviving legally. Gangs aren't a family substitute, they're an underground economy where kids can express their anger and score more money than they can even if they could get hired somewhere.

The daunting difficulty that citizens experience in setting up households, starting families, and keeping the household going long enough to raise kids is, I believe, affecting America's demographics. (and not just for whites, let me make that clear) Giving your kids a reasonably middle class life is a receding hope for too many of us.

There's absolutely nothing racist about discussing how many people can comfortably fit here. There is also nothing racist about only allowing citizens into that conversation, because it's our country. To hear some of the pro-immigration folks, you'd think we were all one big borderless globe. But other countries protect their citizens from being swamped by mass immigration. We don't have Mexico's harsh stance on foreigners who come into a country and try to change it, due to free speech considerations. You'd better not even sign a petition down there, much less march in a demonstration, unless you're a citizen. So we'll have to come up with other ways to make sure that citizens, not lobbyists, get heard.

I don't consider this country being founded by the English and other Europeans to be an accident.

All the pro-immigrant contingents seem to be cross pollinating each other on that point. From Mexico to India, the refrain is, "Your ancestors were allowed in, how dare you slam the door on us? It must because of the color of our skin, there can be no other reason."
They have nothing to stand on, everyone was let in until 1882 when Chinese immigration was restricted, around 1900 Japanese and Koreans were restricted, and in 1920 European immigration was cut way back. Latin American immigration was unrestricted until 1970, and immigration from most of Africa has never been restricted.

So if anything it should be the East Asians and Europeans who should be complaining about past immigration racism, not Latinos or Africans or even Indians.

That is exactly what the Open Borders Lobby (OBL) wants!! That's what they are trying to impose on us!!
