NCCL paedophilia scandal: Patricia Hewitt's apology blows Harriet Harman's last defence out of the water

Just what do Harriet Harman and Jack Dromey think they’re doing? Yesterday I wrote a piece questioning their former NCCL colleague Patricia Hewitt, and the way she had failed to respond to the evidence of links between that organisation and PIE, the front organisation for a group of 1970s child abusers. “Unless there is some practical personal reason none of us are aware of for Hewitt not facing her accusers, she’s left her former colleagues, and her former party, swinging in the wind,” I wrote.
Well, late yesterday – and to her credit – Hewitt responded to those accusations with a concise and no-nonsense apology. “NCCL in the 1970s, along with many others, was naive and wrong to accept PIE's claim to be a 'campaigning and counselling organisation' that 'does not promote unlawful acts',” she said. "As general secretary then, I take responsibility for the mistakes we made. I should have urged the executive committee to take stronger measures to protect NCCL's integrity from the activities of PIE members and sympathisers and I deeply regret not having done so.”
That statement has two immediate consequences. First, it brings closure on the issue for Patricia Hewitt. And secondly it makes Harriet Harman and Jack Dromey’s current stance totally untenable.
Ever since last week both Harman and Dromey have based their defence on three increasingly spurious arguments. The first was that the whole thing was a “smear” cooked up by The Daily Mail.
Despite the continued self-righteous pontificating of their supporters – who now appear to include senior representatives of the Hacked Off campaign – that defence has been totally and utterly demolished. The NCCL story was good, legitimate journalism. The fact it has now been covered by all major news outlets (indeed it was first raised by the Telegraph’s own Damian Thompson), coupled with Hewitt’s apology, prove the Mail was right to print it.

Their second defence was that by the time they joined the organisation PIE were no longer openly prosecuting their agenda within the NCCL. “By the time she arrived [PIE] were very much under the radar,” a spokeswoman for Harman said during the week. This defence has never held water. Not least because Jack Dromey’s own defence was that he had run a vigorous campaign to oust PIE from the NCCL during his period as chairman, and afterwards. But in any case, a series of internal NCCL minutes, the latest of which is published by the Sun this morning, coupled with Hewitt’s admission, proves PIE were open and active well after both Harriet Harman and Jack Dromey secured prominent positions within the NCCL.
The third defence has always been the weakest. Harriet Harman and Jack Dromey have both furiously denied sharing the aims and objectives of PIE. But no one has ever claimed they did. The accusation is they were working for an organisation that was formally associated with a group that was lobbying for the abuse of children, and that their organisation gave that group a platform to lobby for the abuse to be legalised.
Again, Hewitt’s apology blows this third defence clean out of the water. As she says, “NCCL in the 1970s, along with many others, was naive and wrong to accept PIE's claim to be a 'campaigning and counselling organisation' that 'does not promote unlawful acts'.” She acknowledges it was a mistake for the NCCL to be associated with PIE, and unequivocally apologises for that association.
So why won’t Harriet Harman and Jack Dromey? Because it would involve them giving succour to Paul Dacre and the Mail? Because it will involve them losing political face? Because it will be some sort of acknowledgement they have managed this whole affair badly?
If that’s the case then, tough. What is it is about all this that Harriet Harman and Jack Dromey don’t get? They were senior members of an organisation that was being used to lobby for child abusers. That is all that matters. They knew PIE were members of the NCCL. They knew they were formally affiliated. They knew they were active.
The fact is they should have either ensured PIE was kicked out of the NCCL or they should have walked out of the NCCL themselves. That they did neither is, as Patricia Hewitt has at last had the courage to acknowledge, something that self-evidently merits an apology. And if Harriet Harman and Jack Dromey can’t see that, then it’s not just a question of their political judgment, it’s a question of their moral judgment as well.

Former Labour Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt has apologised for having "got it wrong" in the row over a pro-paedophile group.
She said she took responsibility for mistakes made by the National Council for Civil Liberties in the 1970s when she was its general secretary.
The NCCL was "naive" over its links with the Paedophile Information Exchange (PIE), Ms Hewitt said.
But she had never condoned the "vile crimes" of paedophiles, she added.

It is the first time Ms Hewitt, who said she had been away for the past 12 days, has publicly spoken since the latest controversy broke.
She said more should have been done to protect the integrity of the NCCL from the activities of PIE, which was allowed to join the organisation as an affiliate member in 1975.
In a statement, Ms Hewitt explained she had only been able to study allegations made by the Daily Mail upon her return to the UK and said: "Any suggestion that I supported or condoned the vile crimes of child abusers is completely untrue."
The newspaper has questioned Ms Hewitt, along with deputy Labour leader Harriet Harman and Ms Harman's husband and fellow Labour MP Jack Dromey, over their actions while officials at the NCCL in the 1970s and 1980s.
'Repeated condemnations' Ms Hewitt said: "NCCL in the 1970s, along with many others, was naive and wrong to accept PIE's claim to be a 'campaigning and counselling organisation' that 'does not promote unlawful acts'.
"As general secretary then, I take responsibility for the mistakes we made. I got it wrong on PIE and I apologise for having done so.

Ms Hewitt said that in particular, PIE member Tom O'Carroll - who was convicted of child pornography offences in 2006 - should not have been allowed to join the NCCL's gay rights sub-committee.
A proposal by the NCCL to lower the age of consent was not made by her but was the policy of the organisation and its executive committee, she added.
Ms Hewitt, who was general secretary of NCCL from 1974 to 1983, said: "I do not support reducing the age of consent or legalising incest."
Ms Harman has accused the Daily Mail of "smear and innuendo".
While she said she "regrets" that the NCCL had links to PIE, she has insisted that she has nothing to apologise for.
Mr Dromey has insisted that he made "repeated public condemnations" of the pro-paedophile group.
Speaking on BBC One's Question Time, Conservative defence minister Anna Soubry said: "I think Harriet has handled [the story] very badly. If she had just come out and apologised, it would have gone away."
She added: "I don't think she has done herself any favours. Neither has Jack Dromey."
But, for Labour, shadow education minister Rushanara Ali said: "Harriet has spent a lifetime campaigning for women and children. The idea that she would campaign for paedophiles is wrong and ludicrous."
She also said: "There's an argument that the Daily Mail has got an agenda against certain senior figures in the Labour Party."
And Plaid Cymru's Westminster leader, Elfyn Llwyd, said it was wrong to criticise Ms Harman, who had joined the NCCL in 1978, more than two years after the affiliation with PIE was agreed, and had been a "junior lawyer".
"Asking her to apologise is like asking me to apologise for the First World War," he said.

Fear of Being Labeled ‘Racist’ Behind Child Exploitation Cover-Up

Two days ago I became aware of a despicable crime-and-cover-up situation in a mid-size town in South Yorkshire, England. The crime: organized sexual exploitation of children, including rape, beatings and abductions for sex slavery. The equally despicable cover-up: law enforcement and child protective agency personnel ignoring reports of the prolific barbarity, which had been occurring allegedly since the late 1990s.

Damage from this wretched ordeal has been huge. The victim toll stands at over a thousand youth between the ages of 11 and 25. Citizens have been betrayed by the scandalous behavior of officials who turned blind eyes toward the incriminating evidence, and a series of government buffoons have left office.

Looking further, I found that racism, so-called political correctness and public embarrassment contributed to the cover-up, while protecting local youth and prosecuting the perpetrators was moved to the furthest of the proverbial far back burners. The more I read the more my blood began to boil. And the more I wanted to curse the fact that the same thing happens here in the U.S.

For one man, stopping the sex crimes in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, became a life mission. James Cole, a former security guard, wrote reports, sent e-mails, and made phone calls to authorities repeatedly over a 10-year period. But no action was taken. Reading that, I couldn’t help but recall the Penn State scandal.

Reporters from Vice.com met with Cole a few days ago following the belated resignation of Shaun Wright, South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner.

Appalled that it had taken so long for anyone to be punished, but his convictions about what was happening reinforced, Cole began a personal campaign to highlight the links between child sexual exploitation and the gang culture embedded at Rotherham Interchange. Cole is deeply affected by his experiences, wracked with guilt that he should have done more.

“Seeing the assaults, the abuse and the cavalier manner in which these men got away with this. It’s tarnished and almost burnt a hole in my soul. They were just allowed to act like hyenas in the chicken hut” and “Whatever I reported went into a black hole.”

Cole is disgusted that it has taken this long for anything to happen. He says, “Now we know to what extent Rotherham has become some kind of ghettoised brothel.”

Finally someone listened, and an independent investigation * was authorized. The report commissioned by the council, covering 1997 to 2013, detailed cases where children as young as 11 had been raped by a number of different men, abducted, beaten and trafficked to other towns and cities in the north of England to continue the abuse.

Professor Alexis Jay, who wrote the report, said she found “children who had been doused in petrol and threatened with being set alight, threatened with guns, made to witness brutally violent rapes and threatened they would be next if they told anyone”.

The race and political correctness piece is addressed by Professor Jay’s report as well: “By far the majority of perpetrators were described as ‘Asian’ by victims, yet throughout the entire period, councillors did not engage directly with the Pakistani-heritage community to discuss how best they could jointly address the issue. Some councillors seemed to think it was a one-off problem, which they hoped would go away.

Several staff described their nervousness about identifying the ethnic origins of perpetrators for fear of being thought racist; others remembered clear direction from their managers not to do so.”

Those British councillors and chiefs of police left office waay too late, and with their scrawny, little, fearful tails between their legs. Who cares about the ethnicity or national origin of rapists and human traffickers! British, Pakistani, African, Chinese, Colombian, white, black, yellow, brown, Islamic, Judeo-Christian, Buddist, whatever–it doesn’t matter–they are arrogant predators. Arrest, prosecute and sentence them. Protect the children, dammit!

Tired of people talking about “moderate Muslims?” Me too, but here’s the difference: I don’t believe there is such a thing. “Moderate Muslim” is a misnomer – they are not moderate, they’ve just ‘backslidden’…
Don’t know that word? Let me explain: I’ve read the Koran. Pick it up sometime – you don’t have to take my word for it. Islam requires the faithful to spread their faith with violence. That’s the deal, spread the word by the sword.
Infidels will either convert or else.
The Muslim’s most folks call “moderate” aren’t moderate at all: They just aren’t following their Faith. Like a Christian who goes to services on Sunday, but Monday night after the football game they stop off at the topless bar, these so-called “moderate” Muslims are just backsliders. They’re not living up to the tenets of their faith and they know it.
They have a deficit in their devotion to Islam. They don’t speak out against violence, beheadings, bombing, threats, intimidation and murder because it’s in their Book.
End of story.

Now you listen to me: We know – all of us – know that we are going to have to deal with this problem. One day in the near future, we as Americans are going to have to go out and take care of business where these lunatic Islamic-fascist sociopaths are concerned.

Our guy is playing golf, playing public opinion, or just playing us for the pussified lemmings we’ve become. How many Americans have to die before we take action?

You sit around and listen to the media talk about “moderate” Islam and how the vast majority of Muslims are against the violence and radical ideology? Really?
No, friendo, these are the backsliders who know they should be right there with these Islamo-Nazis – fighting Jihad wherever they find the Infidels. Their religion compels them and even though the best they can do is stay silent, make no mistake – they want it and they’re part of it – their shut mouths are the consent of cowards.

Why are we allowing this? I supposed because it’s working out so nicely in Britain and France? Ever hear of an incident in a place called “Rotherham?” It’s a little working-class city in the UK, where for 13 years without anyone intervening, over 1,400 girls were carefully groomed to be whores by members of the city’s Pakistani Muslim minority.
Why? Because Mohammed said it was okay. Look it up, you politically-correct buffoons – don’t take my word for it. Why haven’t you heard of such a tragedy and injustice? Because our media is enabling and assisting these scumbags out of fear of being seen as “Islamo-phobic?” If just 5% of the Muslims coming here were sympathetic and in-step with ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Hamas, or any of these sociopaths – we’re in big-ass trouble.
I’m drawing a line in the sand! Are you an American, are you loyal to America? Then stand up for her – screw your “political correctness” and start acting like an American!
One other thing for my detractors: I’m not Islamo-phobic. I can tell you that because that would indicate a fear of Islam, wouldn’t it? I’m not afraid because I have the truth on my side and the armor of Christ within arms-reach. You’d better prepare to strap on your version of it soon because if we wait – as we did in the 1930’s – people will find themselves struggling for air, no different than those mass-murdered in a Nazi gas chamber by the millions.
Only this time it will be because your head is being sawed off with a rusty, curvy, hate-filled knife.
Nothing moderate about that, my friend and it’s not a matter of “if”: … It’s “when”?
