Please know that our organization fully supports what you are doing. A clear majority of Americans do not want illegal aliens to receive licenses.

On the evening of Friday, December 16th, a group of people advocating the issuing of drivers’ licenses to non-citizens appeared outside my windows yelling and attempting to intimidate me into voting against Assembly Bill 69.

I'm sure they were yelling that she was a racist and a Nazi pig, too. That's what they do.

State Sen. Cathy Stepp (R-Yorkville) says she won't be bullied, intimidated or terrorized at her own home.

That's why she is pursuing charges against people involved in a protest at her house in the dark last week.

The Racine County Sheriff's Department is investigating the Dec. 16 incident in which people associated with Voces de la Frontera brought to Stepp's door their protest against a bill that would require those applying for a driver's license to show proof of legal residency.

Lt. John Hanrahan, public information officer for the Racine County Sheriff's Department, said Thursday the matter remains under investigation.

"There have been interviews of a number of people and we are trying to locate and interview other people who were on Stepp's property and also get statements from witnesses," Hanrahan said.

Hanrahan said the department will gather information about the incident and then will turn it over to the county district attorney's office, which will determine whether charges are appropriate.

Christine Neumann-Ortiz, director of Voces de la Frontera, a community group that works on immigrant and worker rights issues, said about four people were outside Stepp's house that night, but they were there only to talk to the senator. She denied any threats or intimidation.

About a dozen people had held a protest at Stepp's Racine office in the county courthouse between 3:15 and 5 p.m. Dec. 16. Neither Stepp nor her staff were at the office.

"(Stepp) had said that she valued my work and what I do in the Latino community and that she enjoys talking to me. I thought, 'OK, I'll take her up on her offer,' " Neumann-Ortiz said of why some members of the group decided to go to Stepp's home.

Stepp said she was alerted by the Sheriff's Department that protesters were planning to pay her a home visit.

Hanrahan confirmed the Sheriff's Department had called Stepp after getting a call from the protest group. The caller indicated the group was planning a prayer vigil at Stepp's home, perhaps on Sunday, Hanrahan said.

"The shift commander wanted to make sure Stepp was aware that the group would be out," Hanrahan said.

While Neumann-Ortiz characterizes the group's intentions as an attempt to merely talk to the senator, Stepp said the encounter was scary for her and her family.

"I walked to the front of my house and looked out the window and there was someone staring back at me and shouting in the window and other people shouting on the porch," Stepp said. "There were no signs. This was not a peaceful picketing and they certainly weren't invited."

Neumann-Ortiz said that going to Stepp's home seemed to be the group's only recourse since they have not been able to get her to return calls, an assertion Stepp denies.

At a recent hearing on the bill, Neumann-Ortiz said the group was thrilled to hear Stepp say she was going to keep an open mind on the issue but then was shattered when she was quoted the next day in a newspaper saying she would vote for the bill.

"We called her office and said we needed clarification and again, no answer, no response. We then sent out an open letter saying we were going to start picketing her office and we were ignored," Neumann-Ortiz said.

From October through December, Stepp's office has documented three meetings between Stepp's staff and people advocating against the bill, and on Dec. 15 Stepp heard personally from people during a Senate hearing on the issue.

Maria Morales, a Racine resident, said she has had trouble reaching Stepp on this issue. She was at several of the meetings with Stepp's staff and was at the hearing, she said.

"Where's our senator? How can we reach her? Why does she not want to talk to us? We are not terrorists; we do not hide behind a mask," Morales said.

Stepp called the encounter at her home a form of terrorism.

"I don't want this to reflect on the Hispanic community in my district. This isn't the Hispanic community I have come to love and respect. They should know there are people out pretending to advocate on their behalf that are very hurtful to their causes. It's really a shame," Stepp said.

Last week, the Senate's Committee on Natural Resources and Transportation voted 4-1 in support of AB-69, a bill that would require a person applying for a driver's license in Wisconsin to prove his or her citizenship or legal status in the United States.

Stepp was joined in voting for the bill by fellow Republican Sens. Neal Kedzie of Elkhorn and Dan Kapanke of La Crosse, as well as Democratic Sen. Robert Wirch of Pleasant Prairie. Democrat Roger Breske of the Town of Eland voted against the bill.

Supporters of the bill said it is a critical national security measure that needs to be in place to comply with the Real ID Act, a federal law passed earlier this year. If Wisconsin doesn't adopt such a law, the state's driver's licenses wouldn't be accepted at airports or to provide entry to federal buildings, supporters said. Critics said the bill would lead to racial profiling and more unlicensed drivers on the road.

Now that the bill has passed the committee, it could go before the entire Senate early next year.

Gov. Jim Doyle will wait to take a position until the bill is in its final form, "but the federal government has issued a mandate and it doesn't give the state very much wiggle room," said Doyle spokesman Dan Leistikow.

Rep. Pedro Colón (D-Milwaukee) said he was disappointed the group chose to go to Stepp's home to protest, in part because it might set back the fight against the bill, and also because it went too far.

"It's absolutely inappropriate to go and protest in front of someone's house," Colon said.

Still, Colon added that he's seen growing frustration among the immigrant community in his district that they are being targeted by mean-spirited legislation.

Damn Straight it is and if these people are illegal aliens, it's foreign terrorism by agents of a foreign government.

Pedro, "mean-spirited" legislation is the least of illegal immigrants worries. They are going to be deported. They aren't needed, they aren't wanted, and they're going home. And that lady and her little Voice de la Frontera terrorists need to go to GITMO, be properly "interviewed", so we can find out WHO IS BEHIND THIS CRAP!!

And we're giving these people our jobs, our money, our space, our time, our attention, our medical care, our education, our country?

Excellent message to Senator Stepp, William.

This type of activity sure sounds MILITANT to me. I'm sure the woman was FRIGHTENED when these people were RIGHT AT HER DOOR AND WINDOWS. This was no "peaceful protest". This was criminal trespass at the very least. It was certainly harassment and these people SHOULD BE ARRESTED for terrorizing this woman and her family.

I encourage everyone to contact Marquette (Catholic) University http://www.marquette.edu/ and ask them why they are associated with a radical group like Voces de la Frontera that harrasses and intimidates people (which is not very Christian-like).

They even have a webpage on the University's website - http://www.marquette.edu/servicelearnin ... ntera.html If these groups start losing their funding and support then maybe they will think twice about using these violent tactics.

If you've noticed lately, in the news, a LOT of these religious institutions--either Colleges OR CHURCHES, support a lot of these groups including La Raza. It's a PITY PARTY thing, I think.
