Sweet potatoes are a staple for Thanksgiving dinners, but the vegetable deserves the spotlight year-round.
Sweet potatoes contain dietary fiber, vitamins and other essential nutrients. They also offer several health benefits, such as improving digestion.
    Health benefits of sweet potatoes

While some people use the terms "sweet potato" and "yam" interchangeably, the two are not related. Yams have a drier texture and are more starchy compared to sweet potatoes.
Here are some of the health benefits of sweet potatoes:
Support digestive health and bowel regularity

The dietary fiber in sweet potatoes can help prevent constipation and promote regularity, which are important for a healthy digestive tract.
Studies have also found that high dietary fiber intake can help reduce the risk of colorectal cancers.
    Reduce cancer risk

Sweet potatoes are a great source of beta-carotene, a plant pigment that acts as a potent antioxidant. It is also a provitamin.
Your body converts beta-carotene into the active form of vitamin A.
Antioxidants may help reduce the risk of different types of cancer, including lung and prostate cancer.
Antioxidants like beta-carotene can help prevent cellular damage from free radicals. If levels of free radicals in your body get too high, cellular damage can occur. This can increase the risk of some conditions.
Obtaining antioxidants from dietary sources like sweet potatoes may help prevent diseases like cancer.
    Support eye health

After the age of 18, the Dietary Guidelines recommend an intake of 700 milligrams (mg) of vitamin A per day for women and 900 mg per day for men. The vitamin is crucial for protecting eye health.

According to the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), a baked sweet potato with the skin on contains around 1,403 micrograms (mcg) of vitamin A, or 561 percent of the daily requirement.
Vitamin A also acts as an antioxidant. Combined with other antioxidants, it can help protect you from different health conditions.
    Boost immune health

One 124-gram (g) serving of sweet potato provides 12.8 mg of vitamin C. Current guidelines recommend a daily intake of 75 mg of vitamin C for adult women and 90 mg for adult men.
If you consume little or no vitamin C, you can develop scurvy. Many of the symptoms of scurvy are due to tissue problems linked to impaired collagen production.
Vitamin C also supports the immune system and enhances iron absorption. A low vitamin C intake may increase your risk of iron deficiency anemia.
    Helps maintain healthy blood pressure

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), it's best to avoid eating foods that contain high amounts of added salt. Instead, you should eat more potassium-rich foods to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system.
A 124 g serving of mashed sweet potato provides 259 mg of potassium or around five percent of the daily requirements for an adult. Current guidelines recommend that adults consume 4,700 mg of potassium daily.
    Improve insulin sensitivity

In one 2008 study, scientists reported that an extract of white-skinned sweet potato improved insulin sensitivity in people with Type 2 diabetes.
The dietary fiber in sweet potatoes is also good for you. According to research, people who consume more fiber appear to have a lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
A 124 g serving of mashed sweet potato, or around half a cup, will provide 2.5 g of fiber.
The 2015–2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggest that adults aged 19 years and above consume 22.4 to 33.6 g of fiber each day, depending on their age and sex. (Related: Support healthy blood sugar levels with this delicious sweet potato and pumpkin soup.)
    Cooking with sweet potatoes

When buying and cooking sweet potatoes, always check if the potato is firm with smooth, taut skin. Store sweet potatoes in a cool, dry place for no longer than three to five weeks.
Sweet potatoes are naturally sweet and creamy. Roasting sweet potatoes will bring out their natural flavor so you can eat them without toppings.
Other ways to incorporate sweet potatoes into a balanced diet include adding roasted sweet potatoes and pecans to a salad and topping it with balsamic vinegar.
You can also add sweet potato to pancakes or hash browns.
Try these tasty and healthy sweet potato recipes for Thanksgiving:

    • Chicken and rice soup
    • Chipotle chili
    • Roasted sweet potato fries
    • Savory sweet potato casserole
    • Spicy kimchi-sweet potato fritters
    • Sweet potato chips
    • Sweet potato hummus
    • Sweet potato loaf cake with dark chocolate ganache
    • Sweet potato pecan pie

Eat a variety of nutritious foods and incorporate sweet potatoes into your diet to boost your intake of vitamin A and dietary fiber.

Research suggests nutrient from meat and dairy can help KILL cancer cells

    12/06/2023 // Zoey Sky // 1.5K Views

According to a study published in Nature Journal, a nutrient found in both dairy and meat products may help protect against cancer by killing cancer cells.
Researchers from the University of Chicago also reported that the nutrient showed promise for use in cancer treatments.
While conducting the study, the research team looked for compounds that could activate a group of immune cells called CD8+ T, which are known to kill cancerous or virally infected cells.
The researchers discovered that a nutrient called trans-vaccenic acid (TVA) was able to boost the ability of CD8+ T cells to infiltrate tumors and potentially kill cancer cells. TVA is a long-chain fatty acid found in meat and dairy products from grazing animals like cows and sheep.
Additionally, the study showed that cancer patients with higher TVA levels circulating in their blood responded better to immunotherapy. This indicated that TVA shows promise as "a nutritional supplement to complement clinical treatments for cancer."
In the human body, only 20 percent of the TVA is broken down into other byproducts and the remaining 80 percent circulates in the blood.
The research team used TVA while experimenting on mice. For the study, the mice were fed a diet rich in TVA. Data revealed that the TVA "significantly reduced the tumor growth potential of melanoma and colon cancer cells compared to mice fed a control diet."
The researchers also found that the TVA diet helped boost the ability of CD8+ T cells in mice to infiltrate tumors. TVA inactivates a receptor on the surface of CD8+ T cells, then activates a cellular signaling process involved in cellular growth, differentiation and survival.
Mice with the receptors of CD8+ T cells removed lacked improved tumor-fighting ability. The researchers also studied leukemia cells and found that TVA could help enhance "the ability of an immunotherapy drug to kill leukemia cells."
Jing Chen, one of the senior authors of the study, said it was "amazing and intriguing" to observe how a single nutrient like TVA "has a very targeted mechanism on a targeted immune cell type, with a very profound physiological response at the whole organism level."
TVA's future as a potential cancer treatment

Even though the study suggests TVA has potential as a dietary supplement in cancer treatments, Chen advised against focusing too much on the food source.
He explained that because research suggests that a diet with too much red meat or dairy can have adverse effects on overall health, the study should not be taken as an excuse to follow an unhealthy diet and consume a lot of fast food like cheeseburgers or pizza.
Chen added that the focus should be on using TVA nutrient supplements and learning more about the optimized amount to be used in treating cancer. He also suggested that there could be other nutrients that would potentially be able to perform the same function as TVA. (Related: STUDY: Carotenoid in brown seaweed has potent anticancer properties.)
"There is early data showing that other fatty acids from plants signal through a similar receptor, so we believe there is a high possibility that nutrients from plants can do the same thing," said Chen.
The research team also spoke of their plans to build a more comprehensive library of nutrients circulating in the human body to learn how they affect immunity and other biological processes.
An earlier study also revealed a potential positive impact of TVA on cancer. Researchers reviewed the impact of TVA on human nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), a cancer that occurs in the nasopharynx located behind the nose and above the throat.
The results showed that TVA "significantly inhibited cell proliferation" of the NPC cancer cells. The study authors suggested that using TVA could offer an advantage in treating the illness.
In an earlier study from 2014, scientists reported that TVA exerted a "direct anti-carcinogenic effect" on human breast cancer cells.
Significant scientific breakthroughs in cancer research

The recent TVA study follows other significant scientific breakthroughs in the last few years concerning cancer research.
In October 2023, researchers from the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center in Sacramento, California, reported that they discovered a biological "switch" that could make cancer cells destroy themselves.
Through a UC Davis news release the research team reported that CD95 receptors (Fas) are called death receptors. "These protein receptors reside on cell membranes. When activated, they release a signal that causes the cells to self-destruct," the researchers explained.
On the other hand, researchers from Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) discovered that a flavonoid in licorice root could inhibit the progression of pancreatic cancer. The HKBU researchers also said the chemical may boost the efficacy of chemotherapy drugs used to treat the illness.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) warns that cancer is the second most common cause of death in the U.S. and that it is exceeded only by heart disease.
According to the ACS, more than 1.9 million cancer cases will be diagnosed in the country in 2023. The organization expects an estimated 609,820 deaths this year, which comes to around 1,670 deaths per day.
To reduce your cancer risk, avoid harmful habits like smoking. Following a balanced diet and eating a variety of nutritious foods can also help protect against cancer.

Natural healing: A warming apple cider vinegar recipe that helps boost your immune health

    12/20/2023 // Zoey Sky // 130 Views

Tags: alternative medicine, apple cider vinegar, food cures, food is medicine, food science, goodfood, goodhealth, herbal medicine, Herbs, how-to, immune system, natural cures, natural health, natural ingredients, natural medicine, Naturopathy, oxymel, recipes, remedies, superfoods, survival medicine

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a popular superfood ingredient for beverages, salad dressings and pickled foods. It is also often used as a natural ingredient for non-toxic cleaning solutions.
This winter, you can also use apple cider vinegar to make a natural remedy that offers several health benefits, such as promoting digestive health and boosting your immune system.
Detailed below is a recipe from herbal medicine educator Erica Kuo, who shares that taking the apple cider vinegar mixture can help you boost your immune health this winter.
Warming spicy apple cider vinegar recipe

Apple cider vinegar is made by fermenting apple juice. ACV is a popular ingredient for natural health remedies.
According to Kuo, apple cider vinegar contains yeast that can help suppress appetite. Combined with a balanced diet and regular exercise, incorporating apple cider vinegar into your routine can help you achieve your weight management goals. (Related: Prepper essentials: The many survival uses of vinegar.)
During winter, use superfoods like honey, apple cider vinegar and warming spices and herbs to create an immune-boosting tonic.
In the West, this herbal tonic is often called oxymel. The ancient Greek word "oxymeli" translates to "acid and honey." Oxymel is an herbal extraction of vinegar and raw honey.
Below is Kuo's personal recipe for a spicy apple cider vinegar mixture.
    Ingredients:

    • 4 to 5 cups apple cider vinegar
    • 1/2 cup horseradish
    • 1/2 cup onion
    • 1/4 cup garlic
    • 1/4 cup ginger slices
    • 1/4 cup ginseng
    • 2 to 3 chili peppers
    • 1/4 to 1/3 cup honey (To taste)

    Preparation:

    1. Chop all of the ingredients and place them in a half-gallon sterilized glass bottle. Pour in the apple cider vinegar to cover all the ingredients by about two inches.
    2. Cover the bottle with baking paper and place the cap on the bottle to seal it.
    3. Shake the bottle every day for two weeks until all the ingredients are fully submerged and mixed well with the apple cider vinegar.
    4. Store the bottle in the warmest cabinet in your kitchen and let it sit for one month.
    5. After one month, pour and filter the residue. Pour the spicy apple cider vinegar into a clean container. Add honey until you reach your desired sweetness and stir well.
    6. Store the spicy apple cider vinegar mixture in a cool kitchen cabinet until next spring.

    How to use:

    • For mild cold symptoms, add one teaspoon of the spicy apple cider vinegar mixture to one cup of warm water before drinking. Take the mixture three to four times a day.
    • Add the ACV mixture to salads for seasoning.
    • Add the apple cider vinegar mixture to oranges, apples, blueberries and sesame leaves to make a healthy and nutritious side dish.
    • Apply the spicy apple cider vinegar mixture on sore muscles and joints to relieve discomfort.

The superfood ingredients of warming apple cider vinegar

Combining raw apple cider vinegar, which offers unique health benefits, with other superfoods like honey, is a great way to enjoy the benefits of both.
You can also make ACV oxymel to extract and ingest supportive herbs, especially pungent ones that aren't always pleasant to take on their own.
Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) promotes gastric acid secretion and appetite. When a cold or fever sets in, horseradish can help induce sweating and improve respiratory and urinary infections.
Chili pepper supports heart function, especially irregular or weak heartbeat, poor blood circulation and cold limbs. Chili peppers also help invigorate the body and can promote gastrointestinal digestion and increase gastric secretion.
Ginger warms the stomach and intestines, promotes blood circulation, improves cold hands and feet in winter, enhances immune health and strengthens the body's anti-inflammatory function.
It can also help induce sweating, reduce fever, and relieve nausea caused by certain food smells. Additionally, ginger can promote healthy bowel function.
Onions and garlic are rich in beneficial flavonoids and polyphenols, of which allicin is the most important component. Both have antiviral, antioxidant, immune health-boosting and anti-inflammatory effects.
American or Korean ginseng can help activate blood circulation and enhance the body's resilience during stressful situations.
Aside from the ingredients used in the recipe above, some herbalists may recommend adding other medicinal herbs such as rosemary, thyme or turmeric.
Rosemary can help stimulate healthy blood circulation and support optimal brain function. Because it promotes intracranial blood circulation, recent studies suggest that rosemary, like sage, can help prevent Alzheimer's disease, dementia, memory loss, loss of smell and vision loss.
Rosemary also helps boost digestive health and relieves flatulence, dizziness, headaches and fever.
Thyme can boost your immune system and has antibacterial and antimicrobial effects.
Turmeric is a natural "cleansing" ingredient that can purify the blood, aid metabolism and promote liver health. The spice can also help relieve fever, cramps and menstrual pain.
Kuo warns that if you have low blood pressure, you should reduce your consumption of garlic and onions.
If you have hypertension (high blood pressure), add cinnamon to spicy apple cider vinegar to boost its flavor and sweetness. Cinnamon and garlic can prevent blood coagulation, so skip the cinnamon and garlic if you are taking anticoagulants.
If you don't have horseradish, replace it with turmeric.
You should avoid apple cider vinegar if:

    • You have frequent gastroesophageal reflux. Although herbs are added to spicy apple cider vinegar, if you have a weak gastrointestinal tract you shouldn't consume it on an empty stomach. Drink it during or after meals.
    • You have high blood pressure, diabetes, or are on diuretics. Start with a small amount to gradually adapt to taking apple cider vinegar.
    • You have sensitive teeth. Always rinse your mouth immediately after drinking apple cider vinegar.

Vegetable oils are about as toxic as it gets: inflammation, oxidative stress, cancer and more

You have probably heard about the "dirty dozen," but what about the "hateful eight?" The hateful eight refers to the eight most damaging vegetable oils that pollute the food supply and destroy human health.
Dr. Simon Goddek compiled information for an X (formerly Twitter) post about the hateful eight, which include the following vegetable oils:
    1) Sunflower oil
    2) Soybean oil
    3) Cottonseed oil
    4) Safflower oil
    5) Corn oil
    6) Rice bran oil
    7) Grapeseed oil
    8 ) Canola oil
All eight of these vegetable oils are heavily processed well beyond the point of being even remotely healthy or nutritional.

(Related: Earlier this year, researchers discovered that vegetable oils like soy and canola have "remarkable estrogenic properties.")
Vegetable oil consumption linked to early death

In his post, Dr. Goddek, a PhD scientist in biotechnology and science journalist who works as CEO of Sunfluencer, provides seven reasons why vegetable oils from the hateful eight should be avoided at all costs:
    1) Vegetable oils are unnaturally extracted and processed
Unlike coconut and olive oil, both of which are extracted through simple pressing, seed oils like canola, soybean, and corn have to be extracted with heat and harsh chemical solvents such as petroleum, which in turn oxidize and convert them into health-destroying trans fats.
    2) "Vegetable" is a misnomer – the hateful eight oils are toxins
They might sound nice being called "vegetable" oils and all, but the truth is that the hateful eight are industrial seed oils that, prior to the 20th century, never, ever would have been consumed as food. In 1900, almost nobody consumed vegetable oils; today, the average person consumes 70 pounds of them per year.
"This dramatic increase corresponds with a surge in chronic health issues, suggesting a link between seed oil consumption and modern diseases," Dr. Goddek explains.
    3) Industrial seed oils loaded with inflammatory omega-6
Unlike saturated fats that are good for the body, industrial seed oils are mono- and polyunsaturated oils that are high in omega-6 fatty acids, especially linoleic acid, which are a precursor to pro-inflammatory eicosanoids.
"These molecules can cause chronic inflammation and contribute to autoimmune diseases," Dr. Goddek says. "The excessive consumption of Omega-6, without the balance of Omega-3, exacerbates these health issues."
    4) Vegetable oils cause oxidative stress, cancer
Linoleic acid and other omega-6 fatty acids create a host of health problems in the body, not the least of which include oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and genetic damage. This in turn can lead to the growth of cancer tumors with some studies suggesting that diets rich in vegetable oils come with a 400 percent increased risk of metastasis.
    5) Vegetable oils contribute to death
A seven-year study found that consuming vegetable oils leads to a 62 percent increased risk of all-cause mortality, which is higher than the death risk associated with heavy smoking or obesity.
    6) Consume vegetable oils, destroy your heart
The Minnesota Coronary Experiment further found that consuming vegetable oils like corn oil and margarine increases heart attack risk by 86 percent, despite vegetable oil consumers having lower cholesterol levels.
    7) Vegetable oils increase cardiovascular death risk by 700 percent
Another study called the MARGARIN study found that consuming vegetable oils increases one's risk of suffering a stroke, heart attack, or cardiovascular death by 700 percent compared to people who consume more heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

Study shows EXTRA VIRGIN COCONUT OIL can promote weight loss, reduce body fat and improve liver health

    01/05/2024 // Evangelyn Rodriguez // 3.6K Views

Coconut oil is known for its many beneficial properties, which include anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Highly moisturizing and soothing to the skin, coconut oil is also widely used as an ingredient in many skincare products.
In recent years, many people have begun including "extra virgin" (unrefined and typically cold-pressed) coconut oil (EVCO) in their diets because of its reported weight loss benefits. EVCO is a rich source of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), a healthy type of fat that is said to not only provide readily available and longer lasting energy than carbohydrates, but also promote fat-burning.
However, experts are still divided on the matter, citing the lack of larger, more comprehensive studies on the weight loss potential of MCTs and coconut oil's naturally high calorie content.
But according to a recent study published in the Journal of Functional Foods, regular consumption of EVCO can lead to weight loss instead of weight gain so long as intake is kept below 10 percent of one's total daily calorie intake, as recommended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
In addition, the study reported that aside from inducing weight loss, EVCO helped improve lipid metabolism and reduced fat accumulation in the liver of rats with diet-induced obesity. (Related: Study shows cherries can promote weight loss, boost heart health and treat gout.)
Phenolic compounds and MCTs in EVCO work in synergy to combat obesity

To investigate the anti-obesity effect of EVCO, the researchers divided 32 rats into four groups: two groups were fed a normal diet, with one group receiving 3,000 milligrams (mg) per kilogram (kg) body weight of EVCO daily for 16 weeks. Meanwhile, the other two groups were fed a cafeteria diet which consists of unhealthy foods commonly consumed by humans (e.g., hotdogs, muffins, etc.). Likewise, only one of the two groups received EVCO daily for 16 weeks.
The researchers reported that the obese rats exhibited hyperphagia, or insatiable hunger, and consumed almost three times more nutrients and calories than the healthy rats. But daily supplementation with EVCO helped reversed changes associated with obesity, such as body weight gain, high adiposity (body fat accumulation) index and increased abdominal circumference. (Related: Study shows ginger is a potent natural anti-obesity agent.)
The researchers proposed that these anti-obesity effects may be linked to an increase in energy expenditure caused by the MCTs in EVCOs, such as caprylic acid, capric acid and lauric acid. Because these MCTs are directly transported to the liver where they are utilized immediately for energy production, they are not stored as fat inside the body and don't contribute to weight gain or adiposity.
The researchers also noted that obese rats had larger adipocyte (fat cells) areas than healthy rats, but supplementation with EVCO reduced the size of these areas significantly. The researchers attributed this once again to MCTs, which are known to decrease the expression of genes that promote the accumulation of fat tissue. (Related: MCTs help prevent cardiovascular disease by improving the metabolism of cholesterol.)
On the other hand, the researchers credited the phenolic compounds in EVCO with improving insulin sensitivity in obese rats. These phenolic compounds, which include rutin, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, salicylic acid, quercetin, p-coumaric acid, caffeic acid and myricetin, have potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
The researchers explained that chronic inflammation caused by the presence of excess body fat is a major contributor to insulin resistance. Studies have shown that pro-inflammatory signaling molecules can inhibit insulin signal transduction, resulting in a decreased response to insulin by cells. But the anti-inflammatory activities of the phenolic compounds in EVCO can help suppress obesity-induced inflammation, thus improving insulin sensitivity in obese rats.
Meanwhile, the synergistic effects of the MCTs and phenolic compounds in EVCO helped prevent hepatic steatosis in obese rats by reducing the deposition of fats, cholesterol and triglycerides in the liver. According to the researchers, the positive influence of these EVCO components on lipid metabolism in the liver led to the mobilization of fat, cholesterol and liver triglycerides into the blood, consequently increasing the excretion of fecal cholesterol.
Based on these findings, the researchers concluded that consumption of EVCO according to USDA guidelines could help promote weight loss and improve liver function, lipid metabolism and blood sugar control in people with obesity, thanks to the synergy between the MCTs and phenolic compounds in EVCO. A clinical trial involving adult men with obesity also reported that EVCO can improve a person's lipid profile by increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good cholesterol" levels.
