Cabbage juice is an amazing health tonic with a flurry of nutrients and powerful benefits

Cabbage is a delicious leafy vegetable that is often underestimated and undervalued. But this wonderful cruciferous veggie is packed to the brim with health benefits.Cabbage can be served cooked, raw or fermented. The freshness of cabbage provides people with a rich lifeline to many essential vitamins and nutrients. Even raw cabbage can provide not just a whole host of nutrients but also additional texture and flavor to many meals.
One great way to consume cabbage is to juice it. Juicing cabbage is known to provide a whole host of nutrients that may be lost when consumed in a cooked state. Here are some of those benefits.
Powerhouse of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients

Juicing cabbage is a great way to add more vitamins and minerals to your diet. When cabbage is juiced, nutrients that would otherwise be difficult to get from other ways of consuming the cruciferous vegetable are extracted.
Cabbage juice is a soup of vitamins, including A, B2, B6, C, E, K and folate. It is also filled to the brim with minerals like calcium, iodine, iron, magnesium, potassium, sodium and sulfur.
Juiced cabbage also brings out many of the anti-oxidants in the veggie, such as beta-carotene, choline, lutein and zeaxanthine.
Other notable health-promoting compounds found in juiced cabbage include glucosinolates like glucoraphanin, isothiocyanate and sulforaphane; and flavonoids like apigenin, kaemferol and quercetin.
    Helps treat ulcers

A study published in the Western Journal of Medicine indicated that drinking cabbage juice is a safe and effective natural remedy for peptic ulcers.
Researchers reported the rapid reduction of peptic ulcers in people who consumed cabbage juice, noting that the rate was significantly quicker at around 10 days compared to patients who used standard therapies that took approximately 37 days to reduce their ulcers.
Experts believe that cabbage juice has anti-peptic ulcer dietary factors that speed up regeneration, including vitamin U, which prevents histamine-induced peptic ulcers from forming.
Cabbages are also a natural source of phytochemicals, including L-glutamine, S-methylmethionine, gefarnate and glucosinolates, which protect the stomach and digestive tract by healing the mucous membrane lining. (Related: Stop stomach ulcers with the miracle remedy of cabbage.)
Lowers risk of chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease

Consuming five or more servings of cabbage juice weekly is linked to a 33 percent reduction in the risk of developing lymphoma for women, as well as a reduced risk of developing certain other types of cancer, like bladder and colon cancer.
A research article published in the journal Current Pharmacology Reports supported the idea that naturally occurring dietary glucosinates and their derivatives have beneficial effects for cancer prevention because of their role in preventing the initiation of carcinogenesis, or the formation of cancer.
Cabbage juice, as previously stated, is also an excellent source of nutrients like vitamins A and C, anthocyanins, sulforaphane and carotenoids, which through their antioxidant capacity can reduce growth or induce cell death in cancer cells.
    Combats inflammation

A study published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention recognized the contribution of cabbage varieties as sources of important antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phytochemicals, including sulforaphane and flavonoids, like apigenin, kaemferol and quercetin.
    Supports reasonable weight management goals

Cabbage juice, which is a nutritionally robust source of roughage, is ideal for people who want to lose weight in a healthy way because a good serving will keep you feeling full without the added fear of putting on weight. Its fibrous content coupled with its high water content helps you stay satiated for longer and prevents hunger pangs, in addition to keeping your body hydrated.

Marjory Wildcraft: People need to urgently learn to GROW THEIR OWN FOOD as America is collapsing into a wartime homefront

    03/22/2024 // Kevin Hughes // 1.8K Views

Tags: Collapse, conspiracy, emergency food, food collapse, food freedom, food supply, globalists, Health Ranger, Health Ranger Report, home gardening, homesteading, hunger, Marjory Wildcraft, Mike Adams, off grid, preparedness, prepper, prepping, scarcity, self sufficiency, starvation, survival, urban gardening, wartime

Story at a glance: (summary by "Neo" LLM via Brighteon.AI)- Marjory Wildcraft emphasizes the importance of growing one's own food due to potential disruptions in America's food supply.
    - The Health Ranger Mike Adams highlights recent incidents of sabotage on food facilities and distribution hubs, suggesting a possible attack on the country's food supply.
    - Wildcraft compares the situation to historical events like the starvation of Native Americans after buffalo herds were killed and current events in the European Union where farmers are being put out of business.
    - Marjory Wildcraft has created a new course called "Wartime Homefront Essential Skills," available for free on the Brighteon University website starting March 30, to teach people how to grow their own food and preserve it. The course also includes a beginner's guide to foraging.
    - Wildcraft's book "The Grow System" serves as an essential guide to modern self-sufficient living, covering topics from growing food to making medicine, and offering free bonuses on growing food for animals and homemade fertilizers.
    ---
Food growing expert Marjory Wildcraft has stressed that with America turning into a wartime homefront, people need to grow their own food lest they starve to death.
She shared this sentiment during her recent appearance on the "Health Ranger Report" with the Health Ranger Mike Adams, who began the discussion by saying that America's food supply is under constant attack.
The Natural News and Brighteon.com founder cited several recent instances of this. The wildfires in Texas, he said, have destroyed much of the cattle industry and the beef supply. There have also been more than 150 incidents of food facilities, distribution hubs, meatpacking plants and others being sabotaged in the last 18 months.
Wildcraft agreed with his sentiments, saying: "We're at war – I mean, it's happening and the first thing you do in any warfare situation is trying to destroy the food supply for the ones you're combating with. And they are doing a very good job of it." (Related: Marjory Wildcraft tells Mike Adams: People must start growing food now to survive the food crisis.)
She mentioned that in the 1800s, 60 million Native Americans died of starvation after the buffalo herds were killed. Wildcraft, the founder and CEO of The Grow Network, added that the U.S. government at the time was trying to coral all the Native Americans into small, localized areas where they could control them. According to her, this idea is similar to the so-called 15-minute cities that seek to limit people's movement.
The Health Ranger also mentioned that this reminds him of what Israel is doing to the Palestinian population in Gaza – weaponizing famine and hunger. He added that this is the same thing the globalists plan to do to the American people.
Wildcraft continued that this attack on food is happening everywhere, including the European Union where farmers are being put out of business. The resulting farmers' protests, she explained, are the result of these growers seeing the coordinated attacks against food and their resistance to it.
According to her, Europe and the U.S. used to be the most food-secure places on Earth. But now, both are talking about the scenario of an impending food crisis.
Wildcraft has new course for people who want to learn how to grow their own food (and it's free to watch)

The Health Ranger then asked about Wildcraft's new course called "Wartime Homefront Essential Skills." This course will be available for free on Brighteon University website starting on March 30.
She said the presentations condense vital information people will need to be able to manage and take care of their home food garden successfully. The three-part system of the presentations are designed for people who may be beginners in growing their own food.
"The first thing we start out right away is how to grow half of your own food in your backyard," Wildcraft explained. "It really would only take about half an hour to an hour, a day at the most. I go over [things] like how many servings it'll produce [and] what it looks like."
The food growing and sustainable living expert added that aside from growing produce, the presentation also goes over nine different ways of food preservation. People need to know how to preserve food, she added. The presentation also comes with a beginner's guide to foraging, which will help people recognize the edible things that grow around them.
Wildcraft also mentioned that her book "The Grow System" is an essential guide to modern self-sufficient living from growing food to making medicine. Through the book, people can go beyond growing and preserving their own food and even grow food for their animals and livestock. According to her, "The Grow System" also has a free bonus video on how to grow food for chickens and feeds that people can grow for herbivores like rabbits, goats and sheep, as well as 50 homemade fertilizers.

If You Don’t Want Dementia, Scientists Suggest Following The MIND Diet

    POSTED ONMARCH 24, 2024 DIET

    By Study Finds

    What To Know:

    • The MIND diet shows a link to slowing aging and reducing dementia risk.
    • The MIND diet focuses on whole grains, leafy greens, nuts, and berries.
    • Nearly 7 million people have Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia.

As we age, many of us become increasingly concerned about maintaining our cognitive health and reducing our risk of developing dementia. While there is no guaranteed way to prevent this devastating condition, a growing body of research suggests that the food we eat can play a crucial role in brain health and cognitive decline as we age. A team from Columbia University is adding to this conversation, showing how the healthy “MIND” diet may be best for preventing dementia.
The study, published in the Annals of Neurology, investigated the hypothesis that a healthy diet protects against dementia by slowing down the body’s overall pace of biological aging.
“Much attention to nutrition in dementia research focuses on the way specific nutrients affect the brain. We tested the hypothesis that healthy diet protects against dementia by slowing down the body’s overall pace of biological aging,” says lead author Daniel Belsky, PhD, associate professor of Epidemiology at Columbia School of Public Health and the Columbia Aging Center, in a statement.
To test this hypothesis, the researchers used data from the second generation of the Framingham Heart Study, known as the Offspring Cohort. This long-term study, which began in 1971, followed participants who were 60 years of age or older, free of dementia, and had available dietary, epigenetic, and follow-up data. Over the course of the study, participants were assessed every four to seven years, undergoing physical examinations, lifestyle-related questionnaires, blood sampling, and, starting in 1991, neurocognitive testing.
The researchers focused on 1,644 participants, of whom 140 developed dementia during the study period. To measure the pace of biological aging, they used an innovative tool called DunedinPACE, an epigenetic clock developed by Belsky and colleagues at Duke University and the University of Otago. This “speedometer for the biological processes of aging” measures how quickly a person’s body is deteriorating as they age, providing a unique insight into the complex interplay between chronological age and biological age.
Natural Blaze is Google-Free — We Need Your Support The study found that higher adherence to the Mediterranean-Dash Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet, which emphasizes whole grains, leafy greens, nuts, and berries, was associated with a slower pace of aging as measured by DunedinPACE. Importantly, this slower pace of aging was also linked to reduced risks of both dementia and mortality. In fact, the researchers determined that a slower pace of aging accounted for 27 percent of the association between a healthy diet and reduced dementia risk and 57 percent of the association between a healthy diet and reduced mortality risk.
These findings suggest that the protective effects of a healthy diet on brain health may be mediated, at least in part, by its ability to slow down the overall pace of biological aging.
“We have some strong evidence that a healthy diet can protect against dementia, but the mechanism of this protection is not well understood,” notes co-senior author Yian Gu, PhD, associate professor of Neurological Sciences at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and head of the Mailman School Neuroepidemiology Unit.
While this study provides valuable insights into the complex relationship between diet, aging, and dementia risk, the researchers acknowledge that there is still much to learn.
“A portion of the diet-dementia association remains unexplained, therefore we believe that continued investigation of brain-specific mechanisms in well-designed mediation studies is warranted,” explains first author Aline Thomas, PhD, a postdoc at the Columbia Department of Neurology and Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer’s Disease and the Aging Brain.
Despite these remaining questions, the study’s findings have important implications for both individuals and public health professionals. By highlighting the potential role of dietary choices in slowing the pace of biological aging and reducing dementia risk, the research underscores the importance of promoting healthy eating habits across the lifespan.
“If our observations are also confirmed in more diverse populations, monitoring biological aging, may indeed, inform dementia prevention,” Belsky notes.
For individuals looking to protect their brain health as they age, the study’s findings suggest that adopting a diet rich in whole grains, leafy greens, nuts, and berries may be a smart choice. While there is no guarantee that any specific diet will prevent dementia, making healthy dietary choices is a simple and accessible way to support overall health and well-being as we age.

HRS solutions: Must-have survival drinks for your pantry

    03/25/2024 // HRS Editors // 1.4K Views

When you become a prepper, one of your main goals is to ensure that your family has enough supplies to get through a long-term emergency scenario, like a power outage that lasts several days or weeks or a global pandemic that disrupts normal life.
This means stocking up on food with a long shelf life, like grains and canned goods.
Your survival stockpile should also include enough water for cleaning, cooking and drinking, along with beverages like coffee, coconut water and milk to ensure that you stay hydrated. (h/t to IdyllicPursuit.com)
Beverages to stock up on before disaster strikes

Consider these important factors when choosing survival food and beverages to stock up on:

    • Availability
    • Nutritional value
    • Shelf life
    • Storage requirements

By considering these factors, you can ensure that you have a well-rounded and sustainable food and beverage supply when SHTF.
Staying hydrated is important, especially in survival situations. While certain foods, like fruits or vegetables, can provide some of the water that your body needs, it's not enough to keep you hydrated when SHTF.
That's why it's important to have water and other beverages in your survival stockpile.
    Water: A survival essential
Water is crucial for your survival stockpile. You don't just need water for cooking and drinking, you also need to have enough for cleaning and other tasks.
Make sure that you have enough water in your stockpile by storing at least one gallon of water per person per day for both drinking and sanitation purposes. You also need to stock up on water for any pets that you have.

    Tea and coffee
Aside from clean drinking water, having some comfort drinks like coffee and tea can provide a morale boost in survival situations. These beverages can help provide a sense of normalcy and comfort, and they also offer some health benefits.
For example, coffee provides essential calories for energy and sustenance.
To keep your tea and coffee fresh and flavorful for a long time, store them in airtight containers in a cool, dark area in your stockroom.
Other survival beverage options include coconut water or coconut milk and non-fat milk powder. (Related: HRS SOLUTIONS: Stock up on organic non-fat milk powder, a long-lasting source of essential nutrients.)

Essential spices and herbs for your food stockpile

    03/28/2024 // HRS Editors // 970 Views

Tags: bioavailability, black pepper, emergency food, emergency stockpile, emergency supplies, food freedom, food independence, Food storage, food supply, goodfood, homesteading, how-to, nutrients, off grid, preparedness, prepper, prepper pantry, prepping, prepping stockpile, SHTF, survival, survival stockpile, tips, turmeric

The typical survival food stockpile has versatile ingredients like beans, pasta, rolled oats, wheat and more. If you want to cook flavorful meals even in a post-STHF world, you should stock up on different herbs and spices like black pepper, cumin, garlic and turmeric.
Combining these nutritious ingredients ensures that your meals provide you with the calories you need, while also being delicious and well-seasoned. (h/t to TheProvidentPrepper.org)
The best spices and herbs for your survival food supply

If you have a home garden, you can also grow fresh herbs like basil, chives, mint, parsley, rosemary, sage and thyme.
Note that space and money are both limiting factors when building a survival food supply. Before you buy items for your stockpile, make sure you know how to use them for various dishes.
Here are some of the best herbs and spices for your stockpile:
    Chili powder and cumin
You can use chili powder and cumin for many bean recipes.
On its own, chili powder is great if you want to give your favorite savory dishes a spicy kick.
    Cinnamon
Add a bit of cinnamon to give a delicious flavor boost to plain rolled oats or baked bread.
Cinnamon can also be used to make different beverages, like cinnamon hot chocolate, a cinnamon latte, a peanut butter cinnamon smoothie, or a turmeric cinnamon tea. (Related: HRS solutions: Must-have survival drinks for your pantry.)
    Garlic
Aside from fresh garlic bulbs, you can also stock up on garlic salt, garlic pepper, or granulated garlic.
Garlic is an aromatic that pairs well with basic ingredients.
    Lemon pepper
Chard is a leafy green that can provide some missing nutrients when cooking with dry basics. One way to use Swiss chard is to sprinkle a bit of lemon pepper.
    Onions
Many savory dishes use onions as a main ingredient.
    Peppers
Black pepper, cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper, or white pepper should be included in your food stockpile.
    Salt
Even plain salt can make almost any dish taste better.
    Turmeric
Turmeric is a staple in Indian curries, but it is also a great addition to many dishes and even some beverages.
Turmeric’s earthy, warm and peppery flavor pairs best with roasted vegetables like cauliflower, potatoes and your preferred root vegetables. It is also a great addition to vegetable or chicken soup.
Use Organic Ground Black Pepper to enhance the bioavailability of Organic Turmeric Root Powder

To reap the health benefits of turmeric, add a bit of black pepper to your cup of "golden milk," which is usually made with coconut milk, honey and turmeric.
The Health Ranger Store is committed to helping you boost your intake of daily nutrients, and that's why we’re proud to introduce Organic Ground Black Pepper and Organic Turmeric Root Powder.
Black pepper is a versatile spice that has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine for its high concentration of potent, beneficial plant compounds. Derived from the dried berries of the Piper nigrum plant, black pepper is one of the most popular spices in the world.
It is very useful in enhancing the flavor of dishes and it has also earned the title "king of spices."
Enjoy the subtle heat and bold flavor of Health Ranger Select 100% Organic Ground Black Pepper. Our high-quality, freshly ground black pepper is perfect for curries and other dishes, and it can help enhance the bioavailability of turmeric powder.
This lab-verified black pepper is harvested from organically grown peppercorns in Sri Lanka.
Often considered one of the most effective nutritional supplements, turmeric (Curcuma longa) is the yellow-orange powdered spice that makes curry yellow, which is why it is often called the "golden spice."
Years of research have gone into exploring this herb's incredible health benefits, making turmeric one of the most studied botanicals in modern science. These health benefits have been backed by scientific evidence, especially those tied to one of its most renowned healing compounds, curcumin. This active component is well known for supporting optimal overall health and wellness.
Health Ranger Select Organic Turmeric Root Powder is one of the cleanest, highest-quality turmeric powders on the market, and is derived from certified organic turmeric grown in pristine regions of India.
Organic Ground Black Pepper and Organic Turmeric Root Powder from the Health Ranger Store is free of GMOs, fillers, artificial sweeteners and additives.
Our premium black pepper and turmeric root powder are also vegan, non-China, certified Kosher and meticulously lab-tested for glyphosate, heavy metals and microbiology.

Researchers: Type 2 diabetes can be addressed with a low-carb diet paired with high protein and high unsaturated fats

Tags: alternative medicine, blood sugar, diabetes, diabetes cure, diabetes science news, diet, food cures, food is medicine, glycemic index, goodfood, goodhealth, goodmedicine, High-Protein, low carbohydrate, nutrients, prevent diabetes, research, Type 2 Diabetes, unsaturated fats

Health professionals remain divided over the best approach for managing Type 2 diabetes. However, Australia's National Health and Medical Research Council's (NH&MRC) research showed that the best approach is a diet that incorporates low carbohydrates, high protein and high unsaturated fats.Associate Professor Grant Brinkworth, a principal research scientist at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), said the research results are groundbreaking. The most amazing benefit of the low carbohydrate diet was the reduction in medication levels, with some study participants ceasing their medications altogether.
"This research shows that traditional dietary approaches for managing Type 2 diabetes could be outdated," he said. "We really need to review the current dietary guidelines if we are serious about using the latest scientific evidence to reduce the impact of the disease."
The research was a collaboration between CSIRO, the University of Adelaide, Flinders University and the University of South Australia, with an exercise program made in partnership with community fitness centers. (Related: Natural Diabetes Health: Ten Tips for Living with Type 2 Diabetes.)
Campbell Thompson, a professor from Adelaide University, said there were other insights regarding the clinical outcomes of the study. He said the low carbohydrate diet presented greater improvements in the blood cholesterol profile.
Carbohydrates, protein and fat are among the main macronutrients that the body needs. However, unlike carbohydrates and protein, fat does not directly raise blood sugar levels, whether or not we have diabetes. Fat is still necessary for the body to gain energy, keep the hair and skin healthy, and even help cells to function properly.
Fat can be found in different foods and dairy products. Good fat has been used to describe unsaturated fats found in oily fish, avocados and nuts. While the labels good and bad fats simplify these terms, research about which fats are good or bad remains debatable.
The low-fat approach for Type 2 diabetes has been strongly recommended. However, low-fat diets often require high amounts of carbohydrates in the diet, leading to the overproduction of insulin.
Unsaturated fat from nuts and avocados helps increase good cholesterol levels, which is key in helping remove bad cholesterol from healed artery walls to the liver, therefore helping prevent bad cholesterol from blocking the arteries.
Type 2 diabetes among the greatest global health challenges

Obesity remains one of the major risk factors for Type 2 diabetes. Given the increase in obesity and sedentary lifestyles, it seems that the world is looking at an onslaught of the disease.
In Australia, an estimated 800,000 adults have Type 2 diabetes, many of whom are undiagnosed. Based on the findings from the study, implementing a lifestyle program that incorporates this effective low carbohydrate, high protein, high unsaturated fat diet can save Australia around AU$200 million ($131.7 million) annually through the reduction in diabetes-related medication expenditure.
The creation of a proper meal plan for Type 2 diabetics should include complex carbohydrates such as brown rice, whole wheat, oatmeal and fruits with a low glycemic index. It should also include beans, vegetables and lentils.
Type 2 diabetics should avoid simple carbohydrates such as processed sugar, pasta, white bread, flour, cookies and pastries.
Fats don't have much direct effect on blood sugar. However, they can be useful in the slowing absorption of carbohydrates.
Protein provides energy with little effect on blood sugar, keeping it stable and helping with sugar cravings. Protein-packed foods include beans, legumes, eggs, seafood, dairy, lean meats and poultry.
Chia seeds, wild salmon, cinnamon and lentils are among the "superfoods" recommended for people with Type 2 diabetes. A healthy meal plan includes plenty of vegetables and limited processed food.

Your favorite brands of spices may be tainted with toxic metals

Many home cooks often use a variety of herbs and spices to prepare various meals.
However, recent reports have revealed that several popular brands of spices are contaminated with heavy metals like lead, which are often linked to adverse side effects.
Data has revealed that there are elevated levels of lead in six brands of ground cinnamon spice. This is the latest contamination of the toxic metal since there was a massive recall of tainted cinnamon applesauce pouches last fall.
The products tested, which included bags and plastic bottles of ground cinnamon often used in home cooking, have much lower levels of lead than what was detected in the lead-tainted cinnamon used in the apple puree pouches.
However, in a statement, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that prolonged exposure to the tested products may be "unsafe and could contribute to elevated blood lead levels."
FDA warns shoppers to throw away six brands of ground cinnamon that contain lead

The FDA is advising shoppers to discard the following brands of ground cinnamon: El Chilar, La Fiesta, Marcum, MK, Swad and Supreme Tradition.
The contaminated products are sold at local and national retailers such as Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, Patel Brothers and Save A Lot.
The FDA has encouraged the companies to issue voluntary recalls. The agency also warned consumers not to eat, sell, or serve the ground cinnamon products.
The agency has listed specific concerns in a table on its official website.
Some spices often contain low levels of lead. Even though growing plants can sometimes absorb lead that is naturally found in the soil, the metal can also be added during processing as a coloring agent or to make spices heavier.
According to the FDA, several federal and state health officials conducted a "targeted survey" of ground cinnamon products sold at discount retail stores after it was discovered last fall that cinnamon applesauce treats from Schnucks, WanaBana and Weis contained high levels of lead.
The latest investigation revealed that the six ground cinnamon products had lead concentrations ranging from 2.03 to 3.4 parts per million (ppm).
According to the FDA, that amount of lead is considered "significantly lower" than the levels found in the ground cinnamon used in the recalled apple puree pouches, which contained 2,270 ppm to 5,110 ppm of lead.
The FDA cautioned that prolonged exposure to lead in the ground cinnamon could contribute to elevated levels of lead in the blood. There are also no safe levels of lead exposure.
The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that young children are at high risk of lead poisoning because they can absorb four to five times as much lead compared to adults.
Additionally, the FDA has cautioned that high levels of exposure to lead over time in babies and young children may cause neurological effects, learning disabilities and lower IQ levels.
A 2023 study has also warned that contaminated spices are second only to paint as the leading cause of lead poisoning in children.
According to the Douglas County Health Department study, contaminated spices were determined to be the second largest cause of lead poisoning in children in 2021 in Nebraska’s most populous county.

Common bandages contain alarming levels of cancer-causing PFAS, which leach directly into the blood

    04/11/2024 // Lance D Johnson // 2.4K Views

A new investigation by Mammavation finds that cancer-causing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are manufactured into the absorbent pad and sticky flap of common bandages. This is concerning, because PFAS can then leach directly into the bloodstream.According to the investigation, bandages from some of the most well-known brands, like Band-Aid and Curad, contain hazardous amounts of these “forever chemicals.” The testing revealed the presence of fluorine in more than two dozen bandages, which are widely available in medicine cabinets across the nation.
PFAS compounds are strong chemicals that can withstand being in the environment for many years because they have links between fluorine and carbon atoms. The compounds are found in many products, most notably nonstick cookware, hamburger wrappers, menstrual pads and water- and stain-repellent goods. Teflon, the ubiquitous nonstick coating seen in kitchens, is derived from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a type of fluorocarbon. It can linger in human tissue and the environment for years or perhaps decades before being eliminated. These chemicals interfere with human hormones, metabolism and body weight.
Investigation finds that PFAS are infiltrating our blood through BandAids and other common bandages

The investigation looked for PFAS compounds in the adhesive flaps and absorbent pads of bandages offered at CVS, Walmart, Rite Aid, Target and Amazon, among other large stores. When 40 bandages from 18 different brands were examined, quantifiable levels of fluorine were discovered in 26 of the brands. Four types of bandages made by Band-Aid contained more than 180 parts per million of organic fluorine, a vital component of PFAS forever chemicals.
The investigators said that PFAS chemicals, which are occasionally used to produce adhesives, are byproducts of regular production processes. Mamavation claims that the PFAS in bandages are probably there because of their resistance to grease and water.
After a person consumes food or drinks water contaminated with PFAS chemicals, the toxins can readily enter the bloodstream. Once PFAS enter the bloodstream, they can settle into healthy tissue and start to harm organs such as the kidneys, liver and immune system. Toxicologist and former chief of the National Toxicology Program Dr. Linda Birnbaum, who co-led the lab research, described the findings as "troubling" because the toxic chemicals come in close contact with open wounds.
"It's alarming to learn that bandages may also be exposing children and adults to PFAS because they are placed upon open wounds," Dr. Birnbaum stated. Since the research makes it clear that PFAS are not necessary for wound care, it is critical that the industry stop using them in order to safeguard the public from PFAS and switch to PFAS-free alternatives.
    Bandages with PFAS include:

    • Band-Aid Flexible Fabric Comfortable Protection Bandages: 188 ppm organic fluorine on absorbent pad
    • Band-Aid OURTONE Flexible Fabric BR45 Bandages — absorbent pad contained 262 ppm organic fluorine.

Buyers beware: Turmeric products are often contaminated with lead

    04/16/2024 // HRS Editors // 1K Views

When buying supplies for your stockpile, it's important to do so from trusted sources that offer lab-verified organic products. This can help you protect your family from food tainted with harmful heavy metals, such as lead.Lead used to be a contaminant in turmeric, the unique spice that gives curry its beautiful golden color. Researchers traced the contamination to Bangladesh, and their report detailed how lead-adulterated turmeric was slowly poisoning people who used the spice. (h/t to Vox.com)
Lead is a neurotoxin and it can cause premature deaths and lifelong negative side effects. Experts warn that "there is no safe level of lead exposure" and data suggests that any lead causes damage.
The adverse effects may also get worse the more lead exposure there is.
The U.S. phased out leaded gasoline in 1996. After a 20-year global worldwide campaign, in 2021 Algeria became the final country to end leaded gasoline in cars.
The move should help make a huge difference to environmental lead levels. But there are other sources of lead, such as ceramics and car batteries.
This is important because even though Bangladesh phased out leaded gasoline in the 1990s, high blood lead levels have remained. To find out why, researchers Stephen Luby and Jenny Forsyth conducted their research in rural Bangladesh.
The researchers tried to find the source, and the results revealed that it was an unexpected one: lead-adulterated turmeric.
Turmeric is a yellow spice that is often used for cooking in South Asia and beyond. Adding a pigment made of lead chromate to turmeric produces bright, vibrant colors, which also leads to better sales.
The data showed that buyers of the adulterated turmeric were slowly being poisoned. The alarming discovery made a lot of headlines, particularly after it became clear that contaminated spices were also poisoning children in America, often in cases where other family members had brought spices from abroad.
Fortunately, there was also good news.
A paper studying lead in turmeric in Bangladesh revealed that researchers and the Bangladeshi government seemed to have eliminated lead in the turmeric business in the country.
    Lead adulteration of turmeric

Wudan Yan, an author from Undark magazine, talked about what happened after researchers found out that turmeric could be behind the shockingly high blood lead results they were observing.
The researchers working for the nonprofit International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR, B) who confirmed that turmeric was the primary cause of high blood lead levels met with government officials. The research team gathered samples nationwide and published a 2019 follow-up paper on the issue.
Bangladesh’s Food Safety Authority also got involved.
The groups decided on a two-part approach. First, they began an education campaign to warn consumers about the dangers of lead.
Once people found out that lead adulteration was illegal, raids were conducted to analyze turmeric and fine sellers who were selling adulterated turmeric products.
The groups also posted many fliers to teach people about the risks of lead. They also got coverage in the news.
The groups involved also thoroughly inspected the markets with X-ray fluorescence analyzers to detect lead. They also seized contaminated products and fined sellers.
According to the study, these methods worked very well. Researchers shared that the "proportion of market turmeric samples containing detectable lead decreased from 47 percent pre-intervention in 2019 to 0 percent in 2021."
The successful elimination of lead from turmeric also had an immediate and significant effect on blood lead levels in the affected populations, with blood lead levels decreasing to "a median of 30 percent."
The researchers who helped make these significant changes happen are preparing for similar campaigns in other areas where spices are also mixed with dangerous ingredients. (Related: Essential spices and herbs for your food stockpile.)
