Fight cancer and destroy parasites with the help of wormwood

by: Lori Alton, staff writer | March 13, 2024

(NaturalHealth365) It’s quite unnerving to think about the possibility of unseen organisms living in our gastrointestinal tracts, but intestinal parasites are surprisingly common. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), roughly 5% of the U.S. population has antibodies to the Toxocara parasite – parasitic roundworms frequently present in the intestines of dogs (Toxocara canis) and cats (T. cati) – indicating that potentially tens of millions of Americans have come into contact with it. Parasitic infections are a particular concern because parasites have been associated with cancer formation.
But there’s some good news: Wormwood, a plant valued by holistic healers for its ability to tackle parasites, might offer a solution. Despite its somewhat off-putting name, wormwood – scientifically known as Artemisia absinthium – is a beneficial and therapeutic herb with potent antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Not only does it work wonders against intestinal parasites, but emerging research suggests it could also help with conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and even show promise in fighting cancer.
Wormwood combats parasites and pathogens – naturally

For centuries, holistic healers have recommended wormwood as a remedy for intestinal parasites such as roundworms, flatworms, and threadworms (“pinworms”). In fact, wormwood is still known in parts of Europe as the “May Cure,” as it was traditionally taken in springtime as a revitalizing cleanse.
Wormwood owes much of its antiparasitic power to its content of a lactone called artemisinin. It also contains carotenoids, quercetin, flavonoids, and vitamin C.
Wormwood is believed to stimulate the activity of macrophages vital to immune system defense and is particularly efficient at killing parasitic larvae.
Experts say this versatile herb is also effective against pathogens, including E. coli, Salmonella, Candida albicans, and Giardia.
SHOCKING PROBIOTICS UPDATE: Discover the True Value of Probiotics and How to Dramatically Improve Your Physical, Mental and Emotional Wellbeing with ONE Easy Lifestyle Habit.

Note: Wormwood has an advantage over pharmaceutical antibiotics in that parasites and microbes don’t normally develop resistance to it. This is a valuable “plus.”
When used to kill parasites, wormwood is often combined with black walnut and clove oil for maximum benefit.
More good news: Scientists use wormwood to target cancer cells

A recent study published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition highlighted the potential of natural compounds derived from medicinal plants, including wormwood, as complementary treatments for breast cancer. These compounds, along with metabolites extracted from microbes and probiotics, demonstrated antitumor effects such as antiproliferative and cytotoxic activity, increased chemosensitivity of tumors, antioxidant activity, and modulation of breast cancer-associated molecular pathways.
Researchers have also learned that artemisinin (wormwood) becomes toxic in the presence of iron – and they hope to exploit this fact to help defeat cancer cells. It turns out that cancer cells are dependent on iron to facilitate cell division – to a much greater extent than normal cells. In fact, cancer cells possess 5 to 15 times more iron-collecting receptors to help corral the mineral and funnel it into cells.
In a groundbreaking study published in Anticancer Research, scientists first enriched radiation-resistant breast cancer cells with holotransferrin – which helps carry iron into cells – and then treated them with artemisinin. The results were astonishing. Almost all the holotransferrin-exposed breast cancer cells died within 16 hours, leaving normal cells mostly unharmed.
Although more study is needed, these encouraging preliminary results led researchers to highlight wormwood’s potential use as an inexpensive and effective cancer treatment.
Wormwood improves Crohn’s disease symptoms and helps patients go steroid-free

Research has shown that wormwood can reduce the inflammation associated with certain gastrointestinal conditions, including Crohn’s disease and Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). One double-blind German study published in Phytomedicine showed that wormwood can also decrease or eliminate the need for steroids.
Crohn’s disease patients who were already being treated with steroids were given an herbal blend containing wormwood at a dosage of 500 mg three times a day for ten weeks. By the end of the second week, the participants were able to begin tapering off steroids, and by week ten were steroid-free. An amazing 90 percent of the patients experienced decreases in symptoms – while 65 percent (well over half!) experienced complete remission of symptoms.
Steroid drugs feature a long list of side effects – including headache, dizziness, trouble sleeping, mood swings, heartburn, depression, and fatigue. Other reported adverse effects include vision problems, irregular heartbeat, loss of contact with reality, and seizures.
Not only were the vast majority of the patients able to stop taking the steroids, but the researchers found that they also experienced improvements in mood and quality of life.
    How should I take wormwood?

Dried wormwood is available in tablets and capsules and may also be brewed into tea to stimulate digestion and reduce gas and bloating. To make tea, add half a teaspoon to 1 teaspoon of dried wormwood to a cup of boiling water and steep for five to fifteen minutes. Due to its frankly bitter taste, the tea is best sipped. While wormwood contains a toxic substance known as thujone, the dried form of wormwood used in herbal remedies does not contain enough of this compound to be harmful.
Still, you should only use wormwood under the supervision of an experienced holistic doctor. Don’t exceed the advised amounts or use it for longer than four weeks. Also, don’t give wormwood to children unless a qualified medical professional advises. And, if you are allergic to ragweed or other members of the aster family, don’t use wormwood.
The takeaway? When used correctly, Wormwood can be a potent ally against parasites, pathogens and intestinal inflammation – and even shows promise against cancer. Despite its unfortunate name, wormwood should be neither underestimated nor dismissed.

Research shows pineapples can support digestive health and ease pain from sports injuries

    03/14/2024 // Zoey Sky // 1K Views

Tags: alternative medicine, brain health, Bromelain, digestive health, food cures, food is medicine, food science, fruits, goodfood, goodhealth, health science, heart health, natural cures, natural health, natural medicine, nutrients, organics, phytonutrients, pineapples, prevent cancer, remedies, skin health, sports injuries, superfoods

Pineapples are sweet and delicious tropical fruits. A popular ingredient for fruit and green smoothies, studies have also shown that pineapple offers several health benefits, such as supporting digestive health and relieving sports injuries.Despite their name, pineapples don't grow on pine or apple trees. In the 17th century, pineapples were named the way they were because, at the time, the term "apple" was applied to unknown fruits. And pineapples looked like pinecones.
Pineapples originated in South America. By the 15th century, the tropical fruit reached Europe and India because sailors found that eating pineapples helped support their overall well-being during their long voyages. There are now over 100 different pineapple varieties sold worldwide, mainly from Costa Rica, Brazil, India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand.
Experts think that pineapple’s therapeutic value is mainly due to bromelain. The proteolytic enzyme bromelain is found in different supplements and herbal preparations.
The most important substance in pineapple is bromelain. Bromelain is still being studied for its potential use in other medical applications.
As a proteolytic enzyme, bromelain helps break down the protein molecules in food for optimal absorption and digestion. This characteristic is also linked to other beneficial actions.
    Pineapples support brain health

The copper levels in pineapples may help maintain neural pathways in the brain, which then helps support cognitive function.
According to a 2017 study in Iran, pineapple juice positively affected the cognitive ability of memory-impaired mice subjects to recognize objects. The scientists concluded that pineapple has the potential to treat certain cognitive disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Additionally, pineapples may help support mental health by reducing anxiety and improving mood due to tryptophan and magnesium. Both are known to help boost the body’s production of serotonin, the substance that elevates mood.
    Pineapples support a healthy heart

Pineapples contain fiber and potassium, which can both support heart health by reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Potassium is vital in regulating blood pressure, while fiber helps lower cholesterol levels. (Related: Grapefruit found to help reduce high blood pressure.)
Pineapple antioxidants are flavonoids and phenolic compounds that reduce inflammation and damage from free radicals. The results of a laboratory study on rats revealed that these antioxidants may have heart-protective effects by reducing cardiac oxidative stress and inflammation.
    Pineapples support optimal digestive health

Bromelain was first identified in 1891 and has been used as a dietary supplement for gastric upset and inflammation for over 50 years.
Eight proteolytic substances have also been isolated from bromelain. Bromelain therapy is used with pancreatic insufficiency patients who are unable to produce enough digestive enzymes.
Aside from bromelain helping digest the proteins in food, pineapple fiber also contributes to gut mobility and healthy bowel elimination.
Pineapples may help with sports injuries

Bromelain is used for sports injuries and swelling because of its anti-inflammatory effect, especially on the muscles, joints and soft tissue.
One clinical study revealed that, when administered to boxers, bromelain "completely cleared all bruises on the face and hematomas of the orbits, lips, ears, chest, and arms in four days."
The magnesium in pineapple also helps relieve muscle cramps and fatigue.
Pineapples may help with damaged skin and healing

The first critical step in burn or wound care is to treat the affected area before systemic complications such as inflammation and infection set in. Bromelain gel is typically used to remove as much of the damaged skin as possible so cells can regrow with minimal scarring.
Some studies have suggested that bromelain may reduce bruising, inflammation, swelling and pain after surgery. Bromelain has also been found effective in controlling pain after periodontal surgery.
Some topical skin cosmetics products contain bromelain because it has exfoliation properties that can help remove damaged tissue.
Pineapples can help protect against cancer

Cancer is a chronic disease linked to uncontrolled cell growth. Cancer progression is linked to oxidative stress and chronic inflammation.
Studies have found that pineapples have cancer-fighting compounds, such as beta-carotene, bromelain, quercetin and vitamin C, that are known to support the immune system and neutralize harmful free radicals, which helps minimize oxidative stress and reduces inflammation.
Research has also found that bromelain can reduce tumor growth, induce cell death, and reduce inflammation.
According to a laboratory study, bromelain was able to suppress the growth of breast cancer cells. Another study also revealed that the compound inhibited the growth of colon cancer cells.
Research is still being conducted to help experts learn more about pineapple’s anti-cancer properties. Some cancer centers also include pineapple in their patients’ daily diets.
Tips for buying and preparing pineapples

Fresh pineapples are imported from warm climates and the fruits are in season during the spring, fall and winter.
Frozen and fresh pineapple are naturally sweet and free of added sugars. You can enjoy frozen pineapple any time of year.
However, some brands of canned pineapple can be high in sugar, especially if the fruit is sold canned or jarred in syrup. Read the ingredients list to see if sugar is added to the brand before buying.
If there aren't other options, drain the liquid and rinse the fruit to reduce excess sugar.
To reduce the sugar content of the pineapples that you consume, choose pineapple canned or jarred in water or its own juice. You should also choose similar products for fruit cups marketed for children.
If you're worried about how to cut pineapples, you can also buy it pre-sliced fresh or frozen.
Follow the steps below to cut a whole pineapple:

    1. Chop off the leaves and stem.
    2. Stand the pineapple upright and carefully cut off the peel in vertical strips.
    3. Cut the fruit away from the woody core. You can do this in quarters.
    4. Cut the flesh of the fruit.

You can add fresh pineapples to salads. Chopped pineapple can also be added to cottage cheese, ricotta, or yogurt.
Use frozen pineapples to make refreshing fruit or green smoothies. Bake or grill pineapple rings or add some of the chopped fruit into your favorite soups and stews.

Reducing Parkinson’s disease will require phasing out common pesticides and herbicides across agriculture

    03/15/2024 // Lance D Johnson // 2.1K Views

Addressing the root cause of chronic disease in America will not be an easy task. One of the fastest growing neurological disorders in the world is Parkinson’s, and the root causes for this neurological disorder are ingrained into our agricultural systems and lawn care routines.Every year, nearly 90,000 new cases of Parkinson’s are diagnosed. The rate of Parkinson’s has dramatically increased since the 1980s, when the rate of diagnosis was approximately 60,000 people per year. At the current trajectory, there will be 1.2 million people living with Parkinson’s by 2030.
Now, a new study finds that Parkinson’s is more prominent in areas of the country that use greater levels of agricultural pesticides and herbicides. Three of the greatest chemical offenders are atrazine, lindane and simazine.
Geographical study finds higher incidence of Parkinson’s in areas that use atrazine, lindane, simazine

In the geographical study, researchers looked at nationwide data from 21.5 million Medicare beneficiaries who were at least 67 years old in 2009. The study took a closer look at 465 pesticides included in the U.S. Geological Survey and honed in on 65 of the most toxic chemicals. Then, the researchers determined the annual application amount of each pesticide by county between the years 1992 - 2008.
After ruling out county-level air pollution, rural/urban residence, and median income as potential confounding factors, the researchers dialed in on the counties that had a higher use of atrazine, lindane or simazine. These counties were correlated with greater Parkinson’s diagnosis in the Medicare study group. Inhabitants of these high-dose pesticide counties were 25 to 36 percent more likely to develop Parkinson's. This was observed primarily in the Rocky Mountain and Great Plains region of the United States. Agricultural pesticides also contribute to higher Parkinson’s rates in southern California, southeastern Texas, central Pennsylvania and parts of Florida that rely heavily on insecticides. The study will be presented at the 76th annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology in April.

While simazine, lindane and atrazine were more closely linked to Parkinson’s disease, there were eleven other pesticides that also had a strong association with the disease, and that information has yet to be released. These agricultural chemicals are most used in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.
The herbicide atrazine, manufactured by Syngenta, is a notorious endocrine disrupting chemical that is sprayed on golf courses, residential lawns and on various crops such as corn, soybeans and sugarcane. In the study, people living in counties with the highest use of atrazine were 31 percent more likely to be diagnosed with Parkinson’s than in counties with the lowest exposure.
Simazine, which is chemically similar to atrazine, is sprayed on lawns to kill weeds. The chemical works by stopping photosynthesis. It remains biologically active for up to seven months. In the study, there were 411 new cases of Parkinson’s for every 100,000 people in counties with the highest exposure to simazine. In counties with the lowest exposure to the chemical, there were 380 new cases. The European Union has banned both of these chemicals, but both remain popular in Canada and the United States.
Lindane is an organochlorine chemical that is sprayed as an insecticide. The production and agricultural use of lindane was banned in 2009 under the Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants, but is still used as an insecticide and as a secondary pharmaceutical to treat scabies and lice. In the study, people living in counties with the highest exposure to lindane were 25 percent more likely to be diagnosed with Parkinson’s.
Working with or near pesticides and herbicides increases risk of developing Parkinson’s

A 2023 UCLA and Harvard study found that cotton farm workers, who are exposed to these pesticides long term, are more likely to develop Parkinson’s later in life. The researchers were able to identify ten pesticides that cause direct harm to specific neurons in the brain that are responsible for voluntary movement. The pesticides caused these neurons to die off, which is the underlying mechanism behind Parkinson’s disease.
One of the most destructive toxins in pesticides is 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). This neurotoxin, found in pesticides, is structurally similar to paraquat. It causes the brain to deteriorate in the precise areas that control one's motor movement and reward functions. MPTP causes all the telltale signs of Parkinson’s, including tremors, stiffness and slowed movements.
In order to reduce new cases of Parkinson’s disease, farmers will need to phase out many common pesticides and herbicides. This industry-wide phase out will need to be a cooperative effort across multiple counties, states and countries. To reduce incidence of this neurological disease, conventional agriculture will need to be transitioned to include more sustainable, permaculture methods that favor biodiversity, companion planting and manual/automated weed control and biodegradable, non-toxic pest control methods.

If you're willing to invest some of your precious time and effort, you can always get a harvest and be self-sufficient. Start small and scale up. Focus on crops that your family loves to eat, including herbs that add flavor to your dishes. You can also grow flowers to brighten your home and low-maintenance houseplants.According to Survivopedia, gardening can be adapted to nearly any available space – whether you have a rural property with sprawling plots of land or a tiny apartment with just a windowsill and no backyard.
    Vertical gardening

You can make the most of limited space, such as balconies, patios or small gardens, by growing plants – including flowers, herbs and vegetables – vertically. With the right setup and care, vertical gardens can help create privacy screens, reduce the risk of diseases and pests by keeping your plants off the ground and add aesthetic value to your space. (Related: Prepping 101: How to grow food in an indoor survival garden.)
Some of the foods you can grow successfully in a "live wall" system include:

    • Greens – cabbage, kale, leaf lettuce, mustard greens, Romaine lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard
    • Herbs (aromatic and therapeutic) – aloe vera, borage, calendula, catmint, chamomile, echinacea, goldenseal, hyssop, lavender, patchouli, scented geranium, sweet woodruff, yarrow
    • Herbs (for sunny walls) – basil, beebalm, borage, chervil, chives, cilantro, cumin, dill, lemon balm, lemon grass, marjoram, mint, nasturtium, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, savory, stevia, thyme and wheatgrassHuman knowledge is under attack! Container gardening

You can grow flowers, fruits, herbs, succulents, vegetables and more, in grow bags, lined hanging baskets, pots (clay, glazed ceramic, metal plastic or resin), tubs and other repurposed containers. A great option for those with limited space, container gardens are also portable and can be moved around to different locations easily. It can also help prevent diseases and pests that may be present in the soil. (Related: Container gardening tips for the urban prepper.)
    Raised garden beds

Take your container gardening to the next level through raised bed gardening. This is a form of gardening that is typically with a free-standing box or frame with no top that sits above the ground in a sunny spot with good-quality soil. Traditionally, raised beds are open on the bottom so that the plant roots can access soil nutrients above the ground level.
    Straw bale gardening

Use bales of hay or straw instead of a bed of compost or soil to grow smaller plants, such as bush beans, determinate tomatoes, herbs, lettuce and peppers. Straw is inexpensive, easy to work with, and good for your soil. Watering it every day for a few weeks conditions the bale.
The bale generates heat as it breaks down and slowly releases nutrients, helping seeds to germinate and flowers, fruit and vegetables to thrive.
    Community gardens

A community garden is an outdoor space that is used to grow fruits, vegetables and other plants by residents of a community and other interested parties where all of them are involved in sharing parts of its maintenance and upkeep, as well as the garden's rewards. (Related: Why urban preppers are building these gardening plots.)
    Food forest-home garden system

This food production system is based mostly on perennial crops that grow well together, require relatively low maintenance and are more resistant to extreme weather conditions and diseases. It is part of a concept called "permaculture" – a growing system that mimics a natural forest.

Garlic is a powerful superfood and versatile plant that counts as an herb, spice and vegetable.Known alternatively as the "camphor of the poor," the "nectar of the gods," the "poor man's treacle" or the "stinking rose," garlic is not only a cooking staple and a flavorful, everyday superfood valued all over the world, it is also remarkable as a natural medicine.
Garlic is known for its medicinal properties, with documented evidence showing many major civilizations using it, including the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Chinese and Indians.
Garlic contains many essential nutrients like manganese, vitamin B6, vitamin C, selenium and fiber. It can protect against illnesses, including the common cold and the flu. The active compounds in garlic can help reduce blood pressure, with research linking this effect to a 16 to 40 percent reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Garlic is also known to improve blood cholesterol levels in a way that may lower the risk of heart disease.
The wonderful antioxidants in this powerful superfood can also support the body's protective mechanisms against oxidative damage in a way that lowers a person's risk of chronic diseases like Alzheimer's disease. (Related: Extracts from garlic, white onion and purple onion exert inhibitory effects against enzymes linked to diabetes and hypertension.)
Other research shows that regular garlic consumption has a positive effect on longevity, athletic performance, bone health and the detoxification of heavy metals.
    Cooking with garlic

There are many ways to consume garlic. Most commonly, garlic is added to pasta recipes. Garlic is also popularly used in many Asian-style rice dishes.

Garlic is very easy to include in your diet. It complements most savory dishes, especially soups and sauces. The strong taste of garlic is notable for adding a flavorful kick to otherwise bland recipes.
Readily consumable garlic comes in several forms, from whole cloves and smooth pastes to powders and even supplements like garlic oil and garlic extract.
Here is a very easy recipe for oven-poached garlic with red meat:
    Ingredients:

    • One cup of olive oil
    • Three medium-sized potatoes sliced to one-half inch thickness
    • Sprig of fresh thyme or one tablespoon of dried thyme
    • Two bay leaves
    • One-half teaspoon of salt
    • 12 large cloves of garlic
    • One-half pound of tender red meat (or fish), sliced to one-half inch thick

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and pour the oil into a 12-inch cast iron skillet. Lay the potato slices in the oil. Their bulk should raise the oil level above them at least slightly. If this does not happen, pour more oil to cover the potatoes. Add the thyme, bay leaves and salt and put the skillet in the oven.
Heat the potatoes for 20 minutes or until they start to soften. Once this happens, add all of the garlic cloves. Keep heating for 15 more minutes before adding the meat, which should take another 15 minutes to cook.
When this is done, remove the contents with a slotted spoon, holding it above the pan to allow the excess oil to drip back into the skillet. Serve the garlic-infused, oil-poached meal on a plate next to a slice of buttered bread. Smear the softened cloves onto the bread for added flavor.
Watch the following video to learn what benefits you’ll get if you eat garlic and honey on an empty stomach for seven days.

Antibiotics, health and aid the immune system, Most Powerful Natural Antibiotics

Your first line of defence against any illness or infection, is your immune system.
There is no doubt that antibiotics are truly a wonder of modern medicine. Beginning with the discovery of penicillin in 1928, the rapid resolution of bacterial infections from antibiotics caused many in the medical profession to become completely enamored with the drug based approach to illness erroneously thinking that the danger to human life from infections was a thing of the past.
By 1940, antibiotics had come into widespread use causing both doctors and people to gradually forget about natural antibiotics for resolving infections and the age old remedies like cod liver oil. This change in the medical paradigm has led in recent decades to abuse of drug based antibiotics and the worrisome rise of antibiotic resistant superbugs such as the “TDR”(totally drug resistant) strain of tuberculosis and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections particularly in babies and children.
The over-reliance on drug based resolution to infections has also triggered an epidemic of children and adults with compromised gut function and autoimmune diseases of all kinds due to an imbalanced intestinal environment and the consequential scourge of leaky gut syndrome.
Beyond the problem of antibiotic resistance, however, are the long term effects of even a single round of antibiotics. The expectation in the health community that you can just fix the damage with probiotics and/or fermented foods and that gut flora magically returns to normal seems to be far from accurate.
Evidence is now emerging from multiple sources that gut flora may actually be permanently altered by drugs or, at the very least, the damage persists for several years.
The Journal Microbiology, for instance, reports that the generally acknowledged precept that use of antibiotics only causes disruption of the gut flora for a few weeks is highly flawed.
Gut flora does not quickly return to normal after a round of antibiotics.
Even a short course of antibiotics can lead to resistant bacterial populations taking up residence in the gut that persist for up to 4 years – maybe even longer.
The bottom line is that drug based antibiotics really should only be used for life threatening situations – as a last resort if you will.
For bothersome everyday infections that are not life threatening, however, nature provides some very powerful and effective alternatives. Here is the list of the best of these natural antibiotics which have succeeded in keeping my own family of five off all drug based antibiotics for colds, flu, skin and sinus infections for over 15 years (and counting!). This list of the best natural antibiotics on the planet is in no particular order although I make note of which one is my personal favorite.
Note that the natural antibiotics listed below are frequently anti-viral and anti-fungal too unlike pharmaceuticals. They also should not be confused with remedies that help with prevention and/or easing of symptoms. The benefits of elderberry syrup for this purpose come to mind here.

How to Use the Best Natural Antibiotics

    on the Planet

    Oregano Oil

There are over 40 different oregano species, but the most beneficial one to maximize the therapeutic antibiotic effect you need is the oil produced from wild oregano, called Origanum vulgare. Thymus capitatus,a variety that grows in Spain, is also very powerful.
Quality brands of oregano oil are made from these species. The oil is golden to dark yellow, with a strong spicy odor.
According to Dr. Mercola, the best uses for oregano oil as a natural antibiotic are the following:

    • Foot or nail fungus. Put a few teaspoons of oregano oil in a small tub water and soak your feet. The oil can also be diluted (one drop of oil with a teaspoon of olive oil) and then apply directly to nails or skin.
    • Parasites and infections: Dilute the oil as described above and place it under your tongue. Hold it there for a few minutes, and then rinse it out. Repeat at least four times a day.
    • Sinus infections: Put a few drops of oregano oil in a pot of steaming water or neti pot. Then, slowly inhale the steam.

    Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper also called capsicum is a strong spice used for thousands of years for its healing power and antibiotic effects. It’s not just an anecdotal, folklore remedy, however. Science is validating its use as a natural antibiotic as well.
Cayenne pepper is particularly effective at resolving vulvovaginitis, a common infection in women. One Czech study found capsicum essential oil exerts a considerable anti-fungal and antibiotic effect on this condition. It is important to properly use a carrier oil such as olive oil and thoroughly dilute cayenne pepper essential oil, however, as capsicum is quite burning upon initial contact with the skin.
Cayenne pepper is also very effective to use as a home remedy for strep throat.
    Colloidal Silver

The remarkable antibiotic nature of silver has been known for centuries. In the early 1900′s, the founder of Searle Pharmaceuticals, Alfred Searle, wrote in his book The Complete Use of Colloids in Health and Disease:
Applying colloidal silver to human subjects has been done in a large number of cases with astonishingly successful results…it has the advantage of being rapidly fatal to microbes without toxic action on its host. It is quite stable. It protects rabbits from ten times the lethal dose of tetanus or diphtheria toxin.
In the 1970′s, Dr. Robert O. Becker at Syracuse Medical University began to intensively research colloidal silver. He discovered that silver not only kills bacteria, but it actually killed bacteria that were resistant to all known antibiotics with no undesirable side effects.
While colloidal silver is highly antibiotic in nature, I suggest only using it for external uses such as gargling, ear infections like swimmers’ ear and skin. The reason is that ingestion of colloidal silver does damage the delicate gut microbiome by killing beneficial bacteria though not as extensively as drug based antibiotics. If you need the assistance of natural antibiotics to consume internally, choose another one on this list, not colloidal silver.
The Home DoctorDo you know about the gift of nature to save the life of people from various health problems and make them feel secure by curing significant issues? How to live healthy in this world without having chronic diseases or illness or any other health issues which may hurt you physically and mentally? Due to dense population, people are trying to demolish the forest, garden areas to create shelter, so they forced to destroy the nature’s gift such as natural ingredients, secret medicinal herbs and more which are grown in wild forest, mountains and other places. When you read this review entirely, sure you will get chance to know about secrets medicinal ingredients, herbs and more used by our ancestor to get back the lost health without losing your life. Claude Davis was highlighted all the stuff in the form of the e-bookThe Home Doctorfilled with a list of natural ingredients and remedies that you can quickly grow in the backyar
    Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE)

Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) has been reported to be a highly effective, natural antibiotic in combating a variety of common infectious agents. In one study, drops of concentrated grapefruit-seed extract were tested for antibacterial properties against a number of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. The researchers concluded that GSE was comparable to “proven topical antibacterials. Although the GSE appeared to have a somewhat greater inhibitory effect on gram-positive organisms than on gram-negative organisms, its comparative effectiveness against a wide range of bacterial biotypes is significant.”
Used full strength to combat warts, properly diluted GSE has a variety of uses to combat pathogens in your home environment. The only caveat is that commercial preparations of GSE have a chemical in them called diphenol hydroxybenzene that is of questionable safety and other chemicals like triclosan and cancer causing parabens that are definitely to be avoided.
Therefore, if you intend to use GSE especially internally, it is best to make it yourself by grinding the grapefruit seeds and the juiceless pulp and then mixing with pharmaceutical grade glycerin. I recommend this brand.

    Garlic

Of all the natural antibiotics, garlic is my personal favorite and my family’s go-to for internal use. The reason is that it kills the pathogens, not just bacteria but also fungus and viruses too without harming beneficial gut flora.

    • Garlic packs a punch with phytochemicals and healing sulfur components. These sulfur compounds even chelate toxic heavy metals (like lead & cadmium), binding with them for excretion out of the body.
    • It has antibacterial, anti-fungal, and even anti-viral qualities.
    • It promotes the growth of healthy intestinal microflora by acting as a prebiotic (food for probiotics).
    • Garlic helps keep fats from oxidizing.
    • Garlic acts as a strong antioxidant and guards against DNA damage.
    • It protects against radiation & sunlight damage.
    • Garlic fights worms and parasites.
    • It benefits digestion, which is good for the whole body.
    • It contains many nutrients such as vitamins (C, B1, B2, B3), minerals (calcium, folate, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, zinc, and phytochemicals (Allicin, beta-carotene, beta-sitosterol, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, diallyl-disulfide, ferulic acid, geraniol, kaempferol, linalool, oleanolic acid, p-coumaric acid, phloroglucinol, phytic acid, quercetin, rutin, s-allyl-cysteine, saponin, sinapic acid, & stigmasterol).

The phytochemical allicin in garlic is so powerful that it is one of the best natural antibiotics effective against MRSA. This article on MRSA natural remedies describes how to use it appropriately for this purpose.
Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride MD suggests consuming a whole head of garlic a day when using for natural antibiotic purposes. She also outlines how to make garlic infused olive oil as a remedy for ear and other external infections.

    • 1 crushed clove of garlic
    • 1 – 2 tablespoons cold pressed extra virgin olive oil

Place the crushed garlic in the oil and let sit for 30 minutes, then strain. The oil can be warmed slightly by placing it in a cup and setting the cup in warm water (don’t overheat or this will destroy beneficial properties). Use a few drops of this oil hourly in the ears to treat an ear infection. Garlic oil is a safe remedy for children and can also be used daily (just a couple of drops) to soften ear wax buildup.
If you are concerned about the heat and odor potential on breath and sweat from consuming raw garlic cloves, you can use this pickled garlic recipe to substitute fermented garlic cloves instead. Do not use commercial pickled garlic as it has no therapeutic value.
    Ginger

Have you ever wondered why pickled, raw ginger is nearly always served with sushi? This is likely because of historical folklore concerning ginger’s natural antibiotic effects which help prevent food poisoning.
Studies have shown that fresh ginger really does have an antibiotic effect against food borne pathogens such as salmonella, listeria and campylobacter. Fresh ginger also increases stomach acid production and helps calm indigestion when a meal just doesn’t agree with you.
So, if you are going to eat something that has the potential for food borne illness such as sushi or raw oysters, always best to eat some fresh ginger (raw and pickled is most potent) too in order to make use of its natural antibiotic properties.
The Master Tonic, a powerful anti-viral and natural antibiotic, includes plenty of fresh ginger as well as fresh cayenne pepper and garlic. This tonic is a highly effective concoction to make and take with you when traveling overseas in order to have a handy formula available that packs the punch of several natural antibiotics synergistically combined and fermented for maximum potency.
Properly made ginger tea is helpful for digestive ailments such as the inability to absorb food properly and an overabundance of pathogens in the gut. Malabsorption of food can cause nutritional deficiencies that lead to disease over time. “Everything good is found in ginger” declares an ancient Indian proverb.
    Olive Leaf Extract

Most people are aware of the health benefits of pure, 100% extra virgin olive oil. However, many in the health community are still in the dark about the antibiotic effects of olive leaf extract coming from the very same trees!
According to Dr. Ronald Hoffman MD, founder and Medical Director of the Hoffman Center in New York City, olive leaf extract as a healing modality was first realized in the 1800’s for malaria. Olive leaf extract may be best known for it’s ability to reduce fever even due to severe illness.
Early in the last century, oleuropein was isolated from olive leaf extract as this phytochemical was thought to give the olive tree its resistance to disease. Researchers from the Netherlands then learned that elenolic acid, a component of oleuropein, acted as a broad spectrum natural antibiotic, which safely and strongly inhibits the growth of not only bacteria, but also viruses and fungi.
Dr. Hoffman MD’s suggestion for use of olive leaf extract for long standing infections or candida is two 500 mg capsules (20% oleuropein) three to four times per day, preferably with meals.

    Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice widely used in traditional Indian cooking that has been used holistically for centuries.
Dr. Kelly Brogan MD uses turmeric holistically in her psychiatry practice. She writes,
This wonder-spice is a mainstay of my anti-inflammatory work with patients in my practice where I use liposomal preparations of curcumin, the natural phenols responsible for turmeric’s yellow color, when I suspect their symptoms stem from a challenged immune system.
In research, the curcumin in turmeric was shown to be effective against Helicobacter pylori common in gastroduodenal ulcersregardless of the genetic makeup of the strain. The administration of curcumin also resolved any gastric damage caused by the infection. Turmeric is also highly effective in providing allergy relief from the symptoms of allergic rhinitis or hay fever.
If you wish to use turmeric as a natural antibiotic, Dr. Weil suggests to look for extracts in dosages of 400 to 600 mg, and take three times daily or as directed.
    Echinacea

Echinacea is an herb widely used to fight infections and has been the subject of wide scientific research. Even WebMD is positive about it concluding that:
Echinacea is widely used to fight infections, especially the common cold and other upper respiratory infections. Echinacea is also used against many other infections including the flu, urinary tract infections, vaginal yeast infections, genital herpes, bloodstream infections (septicemia), gum disease, tonsillitis, streptococcus infections, syphilis, typhoid, malaria, and diphtheria.
German scientists have studied echinacea using double-blind, placebo-controlled studies, the gold standard for scientific research on drugs. One of these showed that echinacea users experienced less frequent and less severe virus infections by one-third to one-half with no toxic effects compared to the group that took a placebo.
According to Dr. Sears MD, echinacea studies on adults suggest 300 mg three time a day for a total of 900 mg a day as a recommended regimen. For children, half the adult dose for ages 6-13, and one-quarter the adult dose for those under age six.
    Manuka Honey

What would this list of natural antibiotics be without raw honey which has been used as an infection fighter since ancient times? Of all the honey on the planet, manuka honey from New Zealand that is UMF certified is the best when it comes to resolving infections. Just be sure it has never been heated !
I began using manuka honey regularly after my first child was born to resolve a breastfeeding related infection. It worked so well I was able to avoid using antibiotics. I have also used it to very quickly heal strep throat without antibiotics for my tween daughter.
According to Dr. Mercola, clinical trials have found that Manuka honey is effective against more than 250 strains of bacteria, including:

    • MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)
    • MSSA (methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus)
    • VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococci)
    • Helicobacter Pylori (which can cause stomach ulcers)

In 2007, the FDA even approved Manuka honey based wound dressings.
The great thing about Manuka honey is that it is food. I’ve personally found it most effective for skin based infections (just slather on as needed), but the research indicates an internal infection fighting benefit as well even reducing the cavity causing bacteria responsible for dental plaque.
    Pau d’Arco

Overuse of drug based antibiotics frequently leads to an overgrowth in the gut of a large family of yeasts or fungus known as Candida.
Pau d’arco is an herb that is highly anti-Candida and significantly reduces the resultant sugar cravings that come with it. Repressing Candida and ingesting plenty of probiotics in the form of fermented foods and/or supplements will over time allow beneficial gut microbes to regain control of the gut environment.
While Pau d’arco has been used as a medicine for centuries as one of the best natural antibiotics to counteract fungal overgrowth, science is also validating these anecdotal observations. The Brazilian Journal of Biology found in 2010 found that Tabebuia avellanedae, one tree species that is the source of the Pau d’arco herb, does indeed exert an inhibitory effect on yeasts.
The form Pau d’arco is most often used is as an herbal tea, which I must admit, is an acquired taste! Even after drinking it as needed for the past 2 decades, I still don’t like it much! The good news is that the taste isn’t so terrible that you can’t drink a cup or two for a few days to a week or more. This will help you get back into the routine of healthy eating with sweets kept in moderation if Candida has gotten out of control during off the wagon eating while on vacation or due to a round of antibiotics.
Which of the natural antibiotics on this list are your favorites? What do you use them for and when? Please note that if you absolutely have to use pharmaceuticals due to a very serious infection, repairing the gut after antibiotics is a very important process that should be undertaken immediately.

Broccoli’s cancer-fighting compound offers unexpected health benefits

by: Patrick Tims, staff writer | March 18, 2024

(NaturalHealth365) Broccoli, often hailed as a nutritional powerhouse, has long been recognized for its potential to prevent cancer due to its rich content of sulforaphane, a powerful phytochemical. However, recent research has shed light on unexpected health benefits beyond cancer prevention associated with sulforaphane consumption.
Let’s explore the intriguing findings about this potent compound, diving into its wide range of health-promoting characteristics and its promising impact on overall wellness.
Sulforaphane, a cancer-fighting “superhero,” offers multiple benefits, research reveals

Sulforaphane, a compound found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, is well-known for its impressive anti-cancer properties. Research suggests that this compound can hinder the growth of cancer cells, trigger their programmed self-destruction, and even impede the formation of blood vessels that support tumor growth.
Additionally, it aids in detoxification processes and reduces inflammation, which are crucial in cancer prevention. With its multifaceted approach, sulforaphane is truly a promising natural agent in the ongoing battle against cancer.
But the benefits don’t end here. Research shows that sulforaphane’s positive impacts extend beyond cancer prevention and treatment.
Here’s why broccoli is increasingly recognized for its impact on blood platelets

A new study in ACS Central Science, a peer-reviewed, open-access scientific journal published by the American Chemical Society (ACS), looked into how certain compounds found in broccoli and other plants affect blood clotting. Platelets play a crucial role in human health by facilitating hemostasis, which minimizes blood loss by forming clots after injury. However, they also contribute to thrombosis by initiating clot formation in response to factors like high blood velocity, compromised fluid flow, and plaque ruptures.
SHOCKING PROBIOTICS UPDATE: Discover the True Value of Probiotics and How to Dramatically Improve Your Physical, Mental and Emotional Wellbeing with ONE Easy Lifestyle Habit.

Scientists found that sulforaphane has a unique ability to stop blood platelets from sticking together, which is important for preventing strokes and heart attacks. Sulforaphane does this by targeting a specific protein called PDIA6 in platelets. Additionally, sulforaphane seems to enhance the effectiveness of a drug called tissue plasminogen activator, which helps dissolve blood clots without increasing the risk of bleeding. This research suggests that eating broccoli or other foods rich in sulforaphane could potentially help prevent blood clots and improve stroke treatment in the future.
Moreover, the study findings indicate that sulforaphane contributes to preventing neuroinflammation and oxidative stress.
Creative ways to incorporate broccoli into your diet

If you are looking for ways to include more organic broccoli in your diet, here are some delicious ideas to make this nutritious vegetable a tasty addition to your meals:

    1. Add lemon juice to a plate of steamed organic broccoli, pair it with organic brown rice, and sprinkle a dash of sea salt for an extra burst of flavor.
    2. Spice up your tortilla wraps by adding chopped raw broccoli. Combine broccoli with hummus, lettuce, tomato, or your choice of grass-fed meat for a flavorful and convenient handheld lunch or dinner option.
    3. Boost your side dish game with garlic-roasted broccoli. Coat broccoli florets with olive oil, minced garlic, sea salt, and pepper, then roast them on a baking sheet at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes until golden and crispy.

Including broccoli in your diet doesn’t have to be boring. With these creative ideas, you can enjoy the health benefits of this nutrient-packed vegetable in tasty and satisfying ways. Give them a try and discover new ways to make broccoli a staple in your diet for a happier, healthier you!

A serving of apple cider vinegar a day can support healthy weight loss goals, new study reveals

    03/19/2024 // Zoey Sky // 30 Views

Tags: apple cider vinegar, fight obesity, food cures, food is medicine, food science, goodfood, goodhealth, goodmedicine, goodscience, health science, natural cures, natural health, natural medicine, remedies, research, slender, superfoods, weight loss

According to an experimental study, apple cider vinegar may help with weight loss, reduce blood glucose levels and reduce blood lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides). However, the research team advised that you still need to do more than just consume apple cider vinegar every day. Details of the study were published in the journal BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health.
Apple cider vinegar is made from fermented apples and is naturally high in acetic acid.
This superfood is also popular among health enthusiasts because it offers several health benefits, from antibacterial properties to antioxidant effects and the potential to help control blood sugar.
Apple cider vinegar's origins as a health tonic can be traced to Hippocrates, who used it to treat wounds, fever and skin sores. (Related: Natural healing: A warming apple cider vinegar recipe that helps boost your immune health.)
For the experimental study, a research team in Lebanon conducted a double-blind, randomized clinical trial involving overweight and obese young volunteers aged 12 to 25 years old.
The scientists randomly placed 30 participants in one of four groups. The participants were instructed to consume either five, 10 or 15 milliliters (mL) of apple cider vinegar diluted in 250 mL of water every morning before they ate anything for 12 weeks.
The control group consumed an inactive drink – a placebo – made from lactic acid added to water to look and taste the same.
This sort of study usually provides high-quality evidence because it can demonstrate cause and effect that the intervention, which is apple cider vinegar, results in a specific outcome.
The study was also double-blinded, which means neither the volunteers nor the research team involved with collecting the data knew who was in which group.
After three months, data revealed that the regular consumption of apple cider vinegar was linked with a significant decrease in body weight and body mass index (BMI).
On average, the volunteers who drank apple cider vinegar during that period lost six to eight kilograms (13 to 18 pounds) in weight and reduced their BMI by 2.7 to three points, depending on the dose. The volunteers also showed significant decreases in the waist and hip circumference.
Additionally, the scientists observed significant decreases in levels of blood glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol in the apple cider groups, which echoes previous studies.
The placebo group, who consumed water with lactic acid, had smaller decreases in both their weight and BMI. There were also no significant decreases in their blood glucose and blood lipids.
Considerations before taking apple cider vinegar

Before you take apple cider vinegar, keep in mind that it is acidic and there are concerns that it may erode tooth enamel.
This can be an issue with other acidic beverages, including fizzy drinks and sodas, lemon water and orange juice.
To reduce the risk of acid erosion, some dentists recommend the following after drinking acidic drinks:

    • Using a straw to reduce direct contact with the teeth.
    • Rinsing out your mouth with tap water afterward.
    • Chewing sugar-free gum after drinking acidic beverages to stimulate saliva production.
    • Not brushing your teeth immediately after drinking because it might damage the teeth’s softened top layer.

This study offers some evidence of a potential connection between apple cider vinegar and weight loss. But before health professionals can recommend this as a healthy and natural weight loss strategy, experts recommend conducting bigger and better conducted studies across a wider age range.
Such research must be conducted with a controlled background diet and exercise across all volunteers to provide more robust evidence that apple cider vinegar could be a useful aid for healthy weight loss.
But if you don’t mind the acidic taste of apple cider vinegar then you could try consuming a bit to help with weight loss, alongside a balanced diet. This study does not suggest that you can eat whatever you want and drink apple cider vinegar as a way to control your weight.

WONDER POWDER: Health benefits of baking soda, a versatile kitchen staple

    03/19/2024 // Olivia Cook // 600 Views

Tags: acid reflux, alternative medicine, Baking Soda, dental health, digestion, goodhealth, health science, heartburn, immune system, natural antibiotics, natural cures, natural health, natural medicine, Naturopathy, oral health, remedies, respiratory blockages, skin health, Sodium bicarbonate

Sodium bicarbonate, commonly known as baking soda, has been a handy all-purpose household staple for nearly 200 years. Baking soda is a non-toxic white crystalline powder that is affordable at roughly 52 cents an ounce. It is readily available in nearly every drugstore, grocery store, and big-box retailer.Baking soda is known for its myriad of uses. It is used to eliminate odors in enclosed spaces, remove moisture and grease, whiten laundry, clean carpet stains, polish silver and clean surfaces. It can also be used to get rid of weeds and pests, and can also be used to extinguish fires caused by oil and grease.
But baking soda isn't just for the kitchen. Here are some health benefits of baking soda. (Related: Baking soda is a super household aid.)
    Supports healthy energy levels

Sodium bicarbonate is a popular supplement among athletes. Research suggests that taking it by mouth one to two hours before short-term, high-intensity exercise may possibly help men to train and perform longer at their peak.
One small study on 13 young athletes found that those who drank a baking soda solution before a high-intensity intermittent training session have improved performance and lowered fatigue. The participants who drank the baking soda solution also felt as if they weren't working out as hard compared with those who didn't.
Baking soda may help delay fatigue, especially during anaerobic exercises or high-intensity training and sprinting due to its high pH level, letting these athletes perform at maximum intensity for longer periods. A separate study found that cyclists who took baking soda exercised for an average of 4.5 minutes longer than those who did not.
    Addresses heartburn and acid reflux

Sodium bicarbonate is a salt that breaks down to form sodium and bicarbonate in water, making an alkaline solution. This ability to neutralize acid helps reduce the high acidity in bodily fluids, making baking soda a popular antacid for heartburn and indigestion.
It is estimated that more than 60 million Americans experience heartburn at least once a month. Drinking a teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in a glass of cold water may treat occasional heartburn or indigestion by neutralizing stomach acid.
Often used interchangeably with acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn is described as a bothersome feeling of burning pain or discomfort in the chest around the area of the heart that can be quite uncomfortable and sometimes mistaken for heart attack pain.
This heartburn sensation usually occurs after eating large meals, drinking too many carbonated beverages, or eating too many greasy, acidic or spicy foods. Heartburn is a symptom of acid reflux and GERD, which is the chronic, more severe form of acid reflux.
However, baking soda is very high in sodium with 630 milligrams per 1/2 teaspoon – people who need to limit their sodium intake should be wary. Continued use of baking soda to address heartburn isn't advisable as this may lead to metabolic alkalosis, a condition caused by too much bicarbonate in the blood.
    Promotes a healthy mouth

Rinsing your mouth with a mixture of 1/4 teaspoon baking soda and 1/8 teaspoon salt in a cup of warm water for a couple of seconds and spitting it out is often suggested as a natural solution to bad breath. Baking soda has been proven to help reduce the acidity of plaque fluid (which builds up in the mouth) and the growth of odor-producing bacteria responsible for bad breath.
Baking soda is considered a good cleaning agent for your teeth. When you brush with a baking soda toothpaste, grains of baking soda disrupt dental biofilms (colonies of bacteria that attach to the surface of your teeth and eventually cause teeth and gum problems like gingivitis and cavities) like plaque, reducing the bacteria count and helping to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Since it is not acidic, baking soda causes no harm to the teeth, gums or bones.
However, it must be noted that using a baking soda rinse alone will not suffice for good daily oral hygiene. Thus, brushing one's teeth remains important as if not done so, bacteria will form on the teeth, gums and mouth, releasing a gas that smells unpleasant.
    Relieves skin issues

Baking soda possesses natural antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Thus, it has been reported to reduce pain, redness, swelling and relieve the itch associated with skin disorders that include acne, eczema, psoriasis (scaly, itchy skin), hemorrhoids, ichthyosis, mosquito bites, bee stings, rashes from poison ivy/sumac/poison oak and fungal infections of the skin and nails.
    Addresses respiratory blockages

Not only does baking soda make breathing easier, but it also helps open sinus passages. Studies show that a saltwater rinse (from a mixture of concentrated saltwater and sodium bicarbonate) washes crusts and other debris from your nose – helping the nose work better and moving mucus out of the nose faster.
    Supports a healthy immune system

Researchers at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University reported that a daily dose of baking soda may help reduce the destructive inflammation of autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. "We have some of the first evidence of how the cheap, over-the-counter antacid can encourage our spleen to promote an anti-inflammatory environment that could be therapeutic in the face of inflammatory disease," they said.
The versatility of baking soda is unsurpassed and such a multi-purpose product should automatically secure a spot in your stockpile of prepping essentials. It never hurts to have a container on hand.

Boiling Hard Tap Water Removes Up To 90% Of Microplastics: Study

    FRIDAY, MAR 08, 2024 - 08:20 PM
Authored by Amie Dahnke via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours),

Boiling tap water is good for more than just killing certain harmful pathogens
. It can also destroy contaminants such as microplastics and chemicals, making drinking water safer to drink.

    (Jenn Segal)

A new research letter published in Environmental Science & Technology Letters indicates that boiling tap water for just five minutes could reduce the amount of microplastics by up to 90 percent. Researchers from Guangzhou Medical University and the Center for Environmental Microplastics Studies in China recommend boiling water in nonplastic electric kettles on gas stoves to remove impurities such as polystyrene, polyethylene, and polypropylene.
According to the researchers, boiling water has been used since ancient times as a purification method in some Asian countries. “This simple boiling-water strategy can ‘decontaminate’ [nano- and microplastics] from household tap water and has the potential for harmlessly alleviating human intake of [nano- and microplastics] through water consumption,” they wrote.
    Harder Water Captures More Microplastics

Water of a certain alkalinity and hardness typically produces incrustants—insoluble mineral remnants like calcium carbonate—upon boiling. For the study, the researchers hypothesized that calcium carbonate encounters nanoplastics as it crystallizes in hot water. The calcium carbonate then encapsulates the nanoplastics as it becomes the flaky crust you sometimes see at the bottom of your tea kettle.
The study showed that boiling hard tap water containing 300 milligrams per liter (mg/L-1) of calcium carbonate reduced nano- and microplastics by nearly 90 percent, while water containing 80 mg/L-1 reduced particles by 84 percent. In soft water samples containing less than 60 mg/L-1 of calcium carbonate, boiling still reduced plastics by over 25 percent.
The Problem With Millions of Tons of Plastic

Because of our heavy reliance on plastic, nanoplastics and microplastics are common in groundwater and surface water around the globe. Microplastics are truly everywhere, having been detected as far south as Antarctica and north as the Arctic. These insidious particles have even been detected at the peak of Mt. Everest and down in the Mariana Trench. In fact, plastic comprises the largest portion of marine garbage; according to a 2020 study published in Science of the Total Environment, more than 8 million tons of plastic entered the ocean in 2017. That number represented over 33 times more plastic than the amount that had entered the ocean in 2015, indicating a disturbingly worsening problem.
As plastic disintegrates, microscopic pieces are released into the environment. Microplastics are typically less than 5 millimeters in size but can break down into even smaller pieces called nanoplastics. Nanoplastics are nearly impossible to see at 1 micrometer in size. The micro and nano pieces have been found in water, air, soil, food, and table salt, according to some studies.
The health effects of nano- and microplastics haven’t been fully realized. Still, research has suggested that their accumulation in the human body can cause insulin resistance, liver metabolic disorder, DNA damage, organ dysfunction, immune response issues, neurotoxicity, and reproductive harm.
While the research team only focused on three types of nanoparticles, the discovery is a boon for public health. The team estimated that people who boil their water take in two to five times less nanoplastics than those who do not.
“Drinking boiled water apparently is a viable long-term strategy for reducing global exposure to [nano- and microplastics],” the research team wrote, adding that it is likely more effective than drinking bottled water, especially bottled in plastic. The average liter-sized bottle of water contains 240,000 pieces of nanoplastic, which is 10 to 100 times more particles than previously thought.
