Recent research has found fascinating effects of almonds on the brain, particularly in how they might support memory and learning. Almond consumption has been shown to reduce oxidative stress and increase antioxidants in the brain.Almonds are a rich source of several key nutrients that are essential for optimal brain health:
Vitamin E
Almonds are packed with essential nutrients, particularly vitamin E. Just 28 grams of almonds, or about 43 nuts, can provide around 50 percent of your daily vitamin E requirement. This vitamin has been shown to have neuroprotective effects, particularly in slowing down the progression of mild cognitive impairment to dementia, in a 2021 study published in Healthcare.
Research indicates that vitamin E may help protect brain health by improving neurotransmission and reducing neurotoxicity. Various studies have shown that higher levels of vitamin E are linked to better cognitive performance, especially in older adults and those with conditions, like Alzheimer's disease.
Healthy fats
The monounsaturated fats found in almonds are essential for maintaining healthy cell membranes, including those in the brain. These fats support overall brain function and can help improve cognitive performance. Specifically, almonds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for maintaining the structure and functions of brain cells.
According to a study published in Cureus, omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role in promoting cognition, preserving neurons and protecting against neurodegeneration. These beneficial effects are achieved through two mechanisms: enhancing membrane fluidity and boosting neurotransmitter release.
Flavonoids
A study conducted by researchers at the University of California Los Angeles found that consuming almonds regularly improved memory and cognitive function in participants, especially in tasks that require logical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
One of the reasons behind this cognitive boost is the presence of flavonoids in almonds, which are known for their antioxidant properties. These natural compounds reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain, which are known to contribute to cognitive decline – promoting better blood flow.
Almonds are rich in dietary flavonoids, which offer several neuroprotective benefits. A study published in Genes & Nutrition highlights that these flavonoids can protect neurons from damage caused by neurotoxins and reduce neuroinflammation. Furthermore, they may enhance cognitive function, learning and memory.
Magnesium
Almonds are a good source of magnesium, which plays a vital role in brain health, primarily due to its involvement in energy production. Without enough magnesium, energy production in brain cells can be impaired – affecting cognitive function.
Additionally, magnesium regulates neurotransmitters, like gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate, as well as calcium levels in brain cells, which supports learning, memory and neuron activity. Research also suggests that higher brain magnesium levels enhance neurogenesis (the creation of new brain cells) – boosting cognitive adaptability and flexibility.
Almonds: The perfect snack
Raw almonds are generally more nutrient-dense than roasted almonds as the roasting process can reduce some of their vitamins and healthy fats. Unsalted almonds are a better choice for overall health since added salt can contribute to high blood pressure.
Mamra Badam almonds, grown in Afghanistan and Iran, stand out for their unique curved shape and superior nutritional profile. Unlike mass-produced California almonds, Mamra almonds are considered to be nutritionally richer – offering higher levels of healthy fats, including omega-3s. Their premium quality and limited production make them one of the most expensive almonds on the market.
Almonds are the perfect snack no matter the time of day or situation. Whether you're adding them to your oatmeal for extra flavor, snacking during your morning commute, or swapping out chips for a healthier crunch at lunch – almonds fit right in.
Keep a jar at your desk to curb mid-morning cravings, toss them on your salad for a nutty boost, or rely on them for that afternoon energy slump. On the go? Carry almonds in your purse or car for a convenient, satisfying snack. Even late at night, almonds can satisfy cravings without the guilt. Whatever the moment, almonds have you covered.
If you enjoy a mix of textures in your snacks, try making your blend of trail mixes, with almonds at the heart of it. Add in dried fruit, dark chocolate chips, coconut shavings, or whatever you love for a fun, healthy snack that's both crunchy and chewy. Get creative and make it your perfect combo.

Cowboy Cough Syrup with Whiskey
by Lia
October 18, 2024
Dry cough, wet cough, asthma cough, and allergic cough. I’m sure you’ve experienced at least one of these. Cowboys from the Wild West had their own simple but effective remedy to tackle a cough before it worsened.
Whether it was during cold nights on the trail or harsh winters in North Dakota, they relied on this natural cough syrup to keep their throats clear and their lungs free from congestion.
This remedy combines ingredients you likely have on hand: honey, lemon, whiskey, and a few other natural additions for extra power. It’s a simple yet effective syrup that has been passed down through generations.
The Health Benefits of the Ingredients
Before we dive into the recipe, let’s take a closer look at why each of the ingredients is so effective in this natural cough remedy. Each one brings its own unique healing properties to the table.
Honey has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties. Raw honey is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and enzymes.
It coats the throat, soothing irritation, and helping to reduce the frequency of coughing fits. Additionally, honey can ease sore throats and help reduce hoarseness and inflammation in the respiratory system.
Lemon brings a high dose of vitamin C and citric acid, both of which can help to break up mucus and relieve congestion. The acidity of lemon juice helps to clear the throat and reduce pain, while its natural anti-inflammatory properties help calm irritated airways.
Whiskey might seem like an unconventional ingredient, but it has been a go-to for traditional cough syrups for generations. Not only does it have a warming effect that can soothe a sore throat, but it also acts as a mild anesthetic, temporarily numbing the throat and suppressing the urge to cough. Plus, it helps preserve the syrup for longer use.
Bronchial Blend Tincture is a powerful herbal tincture that will supercharge this traditional cowboy remedy by providing support for lung health. While this tincture wasn’t part of the original cowboy concoction, its potent herbs help support lung health, clear congestion, and calm persistent coughs, making it the perfect addition to your cough syrup.
Optional Ingredients for Extra Power
Apple cider vinegar is another ingredient you can add for an extra boost. It helps balance the body’s pH and fights bacteria, making it useful when dealing with coughs due to colds or flu.
Ginger is also a great addition to this remedy, known for its warming, anti-inflammatory effects. It can help reduce irritation in the throat and chest, making it easier to breathe.
Cayenne pepper adds a powerful kick to this remedy. Its active compound, capsaicin, helps to stimulate circulation and thin mucus, making it easier to expel from the respiratory system. The heat from cayenne can also relieve throat pain and open up the airways, providing quick relief from congestion and persistent coughing.
Elderberries are well-known for their powerful immune-boosting and antiviral properties. They can help shorten the duration of colds and flu, support respiratory health, and combat infections that often lead to stubborn coughs. Adding elderberries to this syrup enhances its ability to fight off illnesses and strengthen your immune system.
However, if you don’t have access to fresh elderberries, don’t know where to forage them, or they’re out of season, using this non-GMO Dual-Extracted Elderberry Tincture is a convenient and equally potent alternative. This tincture provides the same immune-boosting benefits without the need to source elderberries yourself, and it also avoids the risk of foraging berries that may have been sprayed with pesticides.
Here’s what you should do next time to stop a stubborn cough fast and easily. It’s a homemade syrup that traces back to the time of the Frontiers!
Cowboy Cough Syrup with Whiskey
Here is how you can prepare the cowboy’s cough syrup:
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup raw honey
- 2 lemons cubed (medium-sized)
- 1/2 cup whiskey
- 3–6 ml (roughly 3–6 dropperfuls) Bronchial Blend Tincture
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger or a small piece of fresh ginger (optional, for added warmth)
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (optional)
- 3–6 ml Dual-Extracted Elderberry Tincture (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a spicy kick)
Instructions:
1. Mix the Ingredients: In a bowl or jar, combine the whiskey, honey, lemon cubes, Bronchial Blend Tincture, and any of the optional ingredients. Stir or shake well until fully mixed.
2. Store the Syrup: Pour the mixture into a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid and store in the refrigerator. It will keep for up to a month.
3. To Use: Adults can take 1 tablespoon of the syrup every 3–4 hours to soothe a cough. It can be taken straight or mixed with a bit of warm water for a more diluted version. You can also add 1-2 teaspoons of this syrup to your tea.
As you whip up your cowboy cough syrup, remember that relying solely on the medical system isn’t always wise, especially in uncertain times. The Lost Book of Herbal Remedies II by Dr. Nicole Apelian can help you take control of your health by teaching you how to make your own remedies at home.
This book dives into new medicinal plants and practical recipes, giving you the tools you need when traditional healthcare options are limited. Don’t wait until it’s too late—get ready to support your health and wellness during tough times.

Your Bug Out Bag Might Actually Be Useless
by Eric Beuning
October 17, 2024
It’s a foregone conclusion that everyone who wants to be remotely prepared for a disaster needs to have a bug-out bag.
When a worst-case scenario strikes, like a wildfire, hurricane or the aftermath of a tornado, you need to be able to get out of Dodge fast.
In a scenario such as this, a bug-out bag with at least 3 days’ worth of survival supplies can save you the precious moments you need to keep from being trapped in the herd.
Yet there are some scenarios where it’s better to bug in, hunker down, and wait out the proverbial storm. Understanding these scenarios and focusing your mental lens to identify them will help you know when your bug-out bag might be useless!
Someone in Your Family Can’t Be Moved
If someone in your family is injured or medically unable to be moved, your bug-out bag could become unnecessary. Choosing to stay with them to help them weather the disaster might be the moral and wiser choice.
In a scenario like this, your bug-out bag’s only value might be in repurposing the medical and/or survival supplies for bugging in.
In a situation where you need to stay put and provide care for a family member, having the right medical supplies on hand becomes even more critical.
Don’t wait until disaster strikes—add these 10 medical supplies to your stockpile now, as they will be the first to vanish when an emergency hits.
You Don’t Have a Predetermined Destination
Bugging out without a safe destination and a reasonable plan on how to get there is often more dangerous than staying put and riding out the disaster. Especially if there are family members who aren’t present, and you don’t have any sort of predetermined meet-up spot.
You shouldn’t assume that you can just wander out into the countryside to find an ideal location. Even if you do find a perfect little farm with dairy goats, chickens, and a windmill, you can bet the original owner has designs on keeping it for themselves. You can also bet that there will be thousands of other people emerging from urban areas that will also take a shine to it.
The wise move right now is to come up with a plan that includes a safe destination or safe house. Perhaps it’s a family friend’s remote cabin or your grandparents’ farm.
Related: Worst States to Live in if You Have to Defend Your Property
The plan should also include various meet-up spots that everyone in the family knows about. If you do get separated, or you have to bug out at different times, being able to reconnect at a spot everyone in the family knows well will save you time. It could even save lives!
The Weather Makes Travel Too Dangerous
Some types of weather like hurricanes and wildfires can force you to bug out. Yet it might be wiser with a blizzard, or ice storm for you and your bug-out bag to stay home.
There are multiple layers to the decision-making process in a weather-related bug-in scenario like this.
You have to account for what the weather will be like in your current location.
You also need to factor in the available resources you have to support you.
If you’re reasonably warm and safe, even if the municipal mains are down, it might make more sense to bug in. In a pinch, you can use your bug-out bag supplies to help you survive until the situation improves.
You also need to account for what conditions are at your intended destination, and what the travel conditions are on the way to get there. If you can check the extended forecast, be sure to also factor in how the weather will change at key points over the coming three to five days.
There’s Mass Chaos in the Streets
If you live in an urban setting and a massive riot breaks out, the wise move might be to shelter in place, rather than bug out. The last thing you want is to try to escape the city and get caught up in mob rule violence or being mistakenly detained by authorities.
However, your bug-out bag might not be completely useless. Depending on the reason for the civil unrest, you might be able to use your bug-out bag later to escape the city. You might just have to wait a few days for things to calm down. Then you can reassess the situation to determine if you do indeed need to bug out.
If, however, you find yourself with no other choice but to bug out and seek refuge in the wilderness, remember that survival in the wild isn’t just about knowing a few tricks—it’s about understanding how to thrive off the land for the long haul.
That’s why I turn to this essential guide. Unlike typical survival manuals, this resource brings to life the forgotten knowledge of our ancestors who not only survived but thrived in the wild. So, when you need to head for the hills, make sure this handbook is in your backpack; it might just be your key to making it through tough times.
Your Vehicle Is Broke Down or Roads Are Blocked
If you’re in an urban or suburban area without a vehicle, or the roads are badly blocked, bugging out might be a bad idea. If you can’t immediately get away from the massive crowds, you’re just putting yourself at more risk than if you sheltered in place.
Riots and mass civil unrest can easily swallow you up as you attempt to bug out.
There’s also a very real chance that you become a victim of violent crime, or your bug-out bag gets stolen. Not to mention the chances of authorities mistaking you for a looter and detaining you.
If you can’t immediately get to a remote area, or some type of safe travel corridor, you’re better off not using your bug-out bag. In time, things might settle down enough where it is possible to bug out, but you’ll have to assess that on a day-by-day basis.
Martial Law Has Been Declared
When martial law is declared it usually comes with very strict curfew orders, which means you and your bug-out bag need to stay put. This is not the time to imagine yourself as the plucky Hollywood hero who slips out despite curfew orders to find freedom and grace.
Martial law means the military is not in charge of maintaining the rule of law. This is a broadsword approach to maintaining civil obedience, without the arguably gentle protections you might be used to from local law enforcement.
Certain states are likely to be among the first to experience the harsh realities of martial law. If you live in one of these red zones, prepare for the reality of restricted movements and limited access to supplies. Make sure your home is stocked with food, water, and medical supplies. Staying calm and collected is essential.
The wise move in a time like this is to keep your bug-out bag under wraps. You should consider it useless and avoid touching the supplies in it until there’s a significant shift in the disaster management landscape.
You’re Waiting for Rescue
If a natural disaster like a hurricane, wildfire or earthquake cuts off all the safe travel corridors, you and your bug-out bag might not be able to reach a safe destination.
In many of these cases, civil authorities might have an evacuation plan, but they need time for conditions to improve enough for them to get people out.
If you attempt to bug out before the evacuation plan can be implemented, you might not be able to escape the area of devastation. You might also miss your opportunity to be evacuated or miss your chance to receive relief supplies.
The wise move is to stay put and make sure any markings declaring you need evacuation are clearly marked. You might also want to divide your bug-out bag into two smaller containers.
In some evacuations, authorities limit just how much you can take with you. You don’t want to be suddenly dumping stuff out at random. It might even be possible to divide your larger bug-out bag amongst other family members during the evacuation effort.
As you consider whether to bug out or stay put, it’s crucial to recognize that sometimes hunkering down is your best option. In uncertain times, knowing how to effectively bug in can make all the difference between surviving and just getting by.
A Navy SEAL’s Bug-In Guide is packed with practical strategies and essential tips that can prepare you for whatever chaos comes your way. This isn’t just about staying safe; it’s about thriving when everything else seems to fall apart.
With the right knowledge, you can turn your home into a secure fortress when the world outside grows increasingly unpredictable. Don’t wait for the storm to hit—start building your bug-in strategy today.

The Worst Places to Be When an EMP Hits
by Aaron Pattison
August 23, 2024
An Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) is a burst of energy that can damage or destroy unprotected electrical equipment and systems. Military and DIY devices can disrupt local areas, some with only a few feet of effective range, while high-altitude nuclear detonations can disrupt entire nations.
Coronal mass ejections from the sun, like the Carrington Event of 1859, can disrupt the entire world, especially the side facing the sun when the energy reaches Earth.
Though less effective than an actual EMP, coordinated cyber attacks can cause many of the same hardships and disruptions.
As with any attack, some places are better to be at than others. Here are some of the worst places to be when an EMP hits.
Dense Urban Areas
Possibly the worst place to be during an EMP strike is in dense urban areas. These areas often have high-rise buildings, complex transportation networks, and significant reliance on electricity.
Even if a river runs through a city, filtered and purified water is pumped to each dwelling, and strong pumps are needed to bring water up hills and tall buildings. Similar to water, sewage systems rely on automated controls and electronic pumps. Without clean water coming in or sewage going out, sanitation will be severely impacted, leading to dehydration and the spread of disease.
If you want to make sure the water you’re using for you and your family is safe to drink, it’s best to filter rainwater yourself. You can learn here a cheap and easy way to create an ingenious rainwater harvesting and purification system capable of storing 165 gallons of water.
Transportation systems and vehicles rely heavily on electrical components, and the system can become instantaneously immobilized.
Cities with hundreds of thousands or millions of people consume several thousand tons of food every day, requiring robust logistics and supply chains.
Without these, food scarcity will rise drastically. Without the means to quickly exit the city, masses of people will slowly expand into more rural areas in search of food. Anyone left in the city’s center will not only be searching for scraps there but will also have to travel quite far to catch up with the masses who scavenged outside of the city.
Crime is already a problem in many cities. Alarms, security cameras, and communications devices rely on electronics. When these systems go down, crime deterrence goes down with them. Criminals will be free to operate without much threat of police intervention unless they just happen to be there.
Even ordinary law-abiding citizens may descend into panic and begin looting. Survival is a more powerful instinct than following the law, meaning the city may not take long to descend into chaos and violent crime.
The Northeast Blackout of 1977 affected New York City and surrounding areas. The blackout lasted for only 25 hours but led to widespread chaos in the city. Looting, arson, and vandalism swept the city, and over 1,000 fires were reported.
Related: How to Tell If You’re an Easy Looter Target
Some reports suggest the crime rate jumped nearly 75 percent, and the total count of violent crimes is difficult to determine. All this was from a lightning strike on a power station that was repaired a day later. An EMP that also disables vehicles, hospitals, communications, and more can easily lead to far greater crime.
Industrial Areas
Many industrial areas can be hit with an EMP and cause little to no danger. Some, like chemical plants or those with chemical processes, can be dangerous to entire regions.
Chemical plants have many fail-safes in case of power outages, but the likelihood of catastrophic failure is greatly increased.
Even a simple fire can ravage the plant, and with communication networks down, emergency services will be unaware until it is too late. An industrial chemical plant going up in flames will spread toxic fumes and smoke regionally.
Beyond toxic fumes, some chemicals tend to create massive explosions. Ammonium nitrate is a commonly used fertilizer and was responsible for the 1947 Texas City disaster when a ship full of it caught fire and exploded, killing hundreds of people and destroying several buildings.
The same fertilizer caught fire and exploded in Beirut, Lebanon, in 2020. This explosion also killed hundreds of people and was one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history.
Military Bases
Military bases are generally well-defended and have significant resources in case of emergencies. The danger lies in them being intentionally targeted.
If an enemy detonates atmospheric EMPs that disrupt the nation, military bases will likely be targeted by further strikes with conventional or nuclear weapons, leading to dangers in the surrounding areas.
⇒ US Nuclear Target Map. Do You Live in the Death Zone?
If these bases are targeted, civilians in the area can easily be caught up in the attack or misidentified and purposely targeted. Even without follow-on attacks on the military base, security forces will be on high alert and may act aggressively without much provocation.
In more extreme cases of government collapse, these bases may become hotbeds for looting and exploitation, providing the looters with sophisticated and exceedingly deadly weapons they may or may not know how to use.
Cartels and organized gangs who manage to take advantage of a situation like this will become a serious threat with the aid of looted military equipment.
Similar events occurred after the collapse of the Soviet Union when large military stockpiles lost centralized control and were exploited by various groups.
Island Nations or States
Highly populated islands, like the Hawaiian Islands, have a finite amount of resources they can produce themselves. Many resources are imported, and there is significant reliance on the outside world. When an EMP hits and those outside resources stop coming, the island will be left to fend for itself.
Food and water will quickly become scarce, and there is nowhere to go to look for more. Fishing, foraging, and rainwater may be enough in the short term, but concerted efforts will have to be made immediately to avoid starvation and civil strife.
Beyond food and water, other goods like manufacturing materials and medical supplies will be difficult to obtain. Antibiotics will be especially hard to come by, so you should learn here how to stockpile antibiotics without a prescription, before it’s too late.
Some estimates suggest Hawaii imports nearly 90 percent of the resources it needs, which is a significant amount of resources to suddenly have to produce itself. Islands have a finite ecosystem of resources that need to be carefully maintained.
If the island must become self-sufficient and source all of the needs of the people, deforestation and ecosystem collapse become more likely, leading to further difficulty in resource acquisition. This exact scenario is thought to have happened to the indigenous people of Easter Island, where they extracted more from the island than it could replace naturally, leading to civil collapse and the eventual extinction of the population.
An EMP can have serious effects, from within a single room to spanning the entire world. From the phones not working to societal collapse, the range of damage is immense, and precautions should be taken to prepare for it.
Coronal mass ejections can reach the earth in 12-48 hours. A modern nuclear missile can reach the US in less than 15 minutes. Cyber attacks can occur instantly.
Preparing in advance is the only sure way to keep yourself from experiencing the full brunt of the effects associated with EMPs. Avoiding the worst areas to be when an EMP hits is an easy first step. Another important step you can take right now is to wrap the essential electronic devices in an EMP-Proof Cloth.
This EMP-Proof cloth was developed after years of extensive research by top U.S. scientists and it provides 98% military-grade protection against electromagnetic waves. You can cover everything in it – as long as you’ve got enough of them – from credit cards, laptop, a fridge and even your car!
The thing is, the EMP Cloth isn’t always available. They don’t restock them that often because they’re pretty hard to produce, so it took YEARS for me to finally get my hands on it. I found a reliable website to order it from, as I wanted to make sure the material is the right one. I recommend you secure your own cloth from here. It’s a rare find and not many people get to own it, which is a shame.
What other places will you be avoiding when an EMP hits? Let us know in the comments!

Everyday carry encompasses all the items you carry on your person every day. It is less of a kit and more of a daily loadout. EDC (Everyday Carry) is popular far beyond prepping and survival- many people try to optimize what they carry with them for every single day of their lives. It can include pouches, multi-tools, and CCW or just be your keys and wallet.
EDC also includes the clothes you choose to wear. Versatility, weight, size, and functionality are all important for EDC gear.

Everyday Carry List
The everyday carry essentials with our recommended gear for each area. Outfitting yourself in most of these will give you the resources to tackle emergencies, disasters, or just everyday life without notice.
Carried EDC Essentials
The essential tools that you carry with you every day are the main components of EDC and will provide you with the most versatility and functionality. These tools don’t take up much room and should be able to fit in your pocket or around your person without any additional pouches, bags, or backpacks.
Sean’s pocket and keychain-only EDC with mostly just the essentials. Odds are, you probably have many of these as part of your existing EDC loadout whether you know it or not!

Water Tools & Supplies
“When the well is dry, we learn the worth of water.” – Benjamin FranklinFor SHTF, you’ll want a large, abundant source of drinking water at your disposal.
- Maybe you live near a river, lake, pond, or stream.
- Or perhaps you have your own water well.
These are all great options in a crisis, as long as they avoid contamination or don’t dry up.
- But what’s your backup plan should your water source become compromised?
- Or what if you don’t have a reliable water source if the taps run dry?
Consuming contaminated water will make you sick.
And can even kill you in some circumstances.
Worst yet, having no water will kill you even faster…
We all know the body needs continuous hydration to function.
It only takes a few days to die without water.
So, stock up on water – NO exceptions!
YOU decide how much…
These are the tools to you do it right:
1. Plastic Water Storage Containers
30 Gallons (6 Jug) Bundle
The Legacy Premium Water Storage System is the simplest way to store water without taking up a ton of storage space.
How? They’re stackable.
They’re like Lego bricks for water storage.
So they easily fit into nearly ANY size (or shape) space with ease.
You can even spread them out between 3 or 4 closets (if necessary).
And hauling is easy with the built-in handle.
Plus, each holds just 5 gallons. But THAT’s a plus.
It’s only 42 lbs. when full.
So you can move them around without throwing out your back!
Ten of these containers stash about 50 gallons of potable water.
Why not just use a 50-gallon food-grade drum instead?
Because they’re extremely heavy when full.
Have you ever tried to move a 50-gallon drum?
Fifty gallons of water weighs 415.8 lbs.
And the container itself adds a few pounds.
I don’t know about you, but there’s zero chance I can move 415+ lbs. of water.
I’d have to empty it first.
So, if forced to change locations (due to unforeseen circumstances), I’d have to leave my water behind.
But with these stackables, I’d grab one in each hand and toss them into my bug out vehicle.
Contamination IS A Threat
In a disaster, the cleanliness of your surroundings will degrade.
Especially if you have kids around…
They like to put their grubby hands on everything!
The last thing you want is 55-gallons of contaminated water.
I’d rather the little ones (or myself by accident) ruin a 5 gallon supply.
Leaving the other untapped containers still safe to drink.
These are the reasons why I chose these Legacy Premium Water Containers.
Get a few today and easily add more as your needs grow.
Plus, if you get the 30-gallon package (6 containers), you’ll get some bonus features:
- A handy cap wrench (to ensure you lock and seal these containers)
- Two spigots (this allows you to tap into two jugs at the same time). Ideal for separating sanitation and consumption streams.
- Water Purification Treatment Solution (the perfect amount for 30 gallons).
2. Rainwater Collection System
In a worst-case scenario, you’ll eventually run out of the water.
At that point, you’ll replenish or die.
If you live near a river, lake, or stream, (or have a backyard pool), you’re set.
YOU can skip ahead and forgo a rainwater collection system.
For EVERYONE else, devise a plan to collect H2O from the sky.
At a minimum, get a sturdy rain barrel with a spigot at the bottom.
Install the barrel under a downspout.
However, you can do better.
Here’s an article on this topic and how to set up these rainwater collection systems.
Note: if the emergency is nuclear, rainwater may be contaminated with fall out. For these disasters, you need a nuclear shelter near your home.
3. Water Filter & Purification Tools
The AlexaPure Pro
Whatever water storage system you choose, you’ll need a filtration and purification plan.
Why? Because consuming untreated water is risky.
Only chance it if you’re 100% certain the water is free of harmful contaminants.
But after a major disaster, those pristine rivers, lakes, and streams may no longer be safe.
Get an AlexaPure Pro Water Filtration System.
It’s the ULTIMATE gravity-fed water filtration solution.
4. Bottles of Bleach
Just a few drops of bleach can purify a LOT of water.
How? By killing any harmful bacteria within.
And while consuming bleach sounds scary, trace amounts are safe.
3 Pack Of Bleach (121 oz.)
And bleach is very easy to stockpile.
You can buy it in bulk at reasonable prices.
One downside is it has a shorter shelf life.
Combat this by replacing it every few years.
But isn’t that just a waste of money?
Not really, because:
- It’s so cheap
- It’s readily available
- You don’t need much
It only takes a few drops of bleach vs. the total volume of water.
It can also double as a cleaning agent.
So, it’s one of those “multi-use / multi-purpose” items preppers LOVE to stockpile.
Get some.
Note: Bleach cannot remove water contaminated with chemicals, oils, poisonous substances, sewage, or any physical item contamination.

Food Tools & Prepper Supplies
There’s no avoiding it…
We have to replace the calories we burn.
Because NOT replacing calories is called starvation.
I’ll save you the gruesome details, but trust me, starvation is a horrible way to die.
Yes, dehydration kills faster, but the agony period is shorter.
With starvation, it can take a month (or more) for the body to perish.
It’s a slow, painful way to go!
So stockpile some today and avoid this horrible fate.
5. Freeze Dried Meals & Canned Meats
First, freeze-dried meals are the quickest way stockpile calories.
But it’s not the cheapest option (we’ll cover THAT shortly).
Choose a trusted vendor, and get a large variety of easy-to-make meals.
- Each meal’s packaged in Mylar bags.
- These meals will be put into stackable bins.
- And the entire delivery comes to your front door.
Boom! You now have a bunch of nutritious freeze dried meals in a pouch.
Just toss one in boiling water, stir, and enjoy a tasty meal in minutes.
These meals are incredibly shelf-stable.
They’re guaranteed up to 25+ years.
Why? Because the food is freeze-dried and packaged in Mylar bags with nitrogen.
This means you don’t have to worry about rotation.
Also, these pre-packaged meals are both nutritious and delicious.
So you don’t need additional spices to make your “bags of rice palatable.
It’s the ultimate “set it and forget it solution.
It’s the best way to go IF you have the funds.
I recommend Valley Food Storage.
Click here to see their deals or here to read my detailed review.
I also recommend you stockpile canned meats.
In a long-term emergency, proteins will be hard to come by.
Why? Because meats spoil quickly without refrigeration.
All those frozen steaks will spoil within days in a power outage.
Instead, you need shelf-stable meat without refrigeration.
Survival Fresh Canned Meats
That’s why you get some Survival Fresh canned meats.
First off, these meats are delicious.
Just check some of these reviews; they speak for themselves.
Preppers, campers, and meat lovers all rate them as one of the “best survival foods” of all time.
The bottom line is:
This isn’t your father’s can of Spam!
And not only does it taste great, but they have an ultra-long shelf-life of 25 years!
Giving you confidence to buy in bulk.
But how does Survival Fresh last so much longer than grocery store canned meats?
Survival Fresh seals uncooked meat into cans first.
Only then is it slow-pressure cooked.
This process provides a much longer shelf life.
So, while grocery store cans of meat are lucky to have an 18-month shelf life, Survival Fresh is good for 25 years!
And those grocery store options are loaded with fillers, preservatives, and growth hormones.
Survival Fresh Meats are an all-natural healthy protein.
The bottom line:
Freeze-dried foods and canned meats could become the best investment you ever make.
Why? Because if it pays off, you avoid starvation!
That’s an excellent return on your dollars if you ask me…
- Get a year’s worth right now and be done with it.
- Or buy a few months at a time.
Your other option is the ‘Do It Yourself’ route…
6. DIY Food Stockpiling
Many people choose this option to save money.
But it takes MORE time, effort, and planning.
First, get a list of the best long-shelf-life foods.
Most are core stables like:
- Rice
- Beans
- Wheat
- Dried pasta
- Etc.
Then, buy bulk online or at your local grocer.
Price shop for the best deals based on a cost-per-calorie basis!
Once you bring these home:
- Divide them into large Mylar bags.
- Add oxygen absorbers into each bag before sealing (to remove any remaining oxygen).
- Vacuum seal each bag.
- Placing these bags into food-grade plastic buckets with sealable lids (they keep critters from snacking on your stockpile).
- Store them in a cool, dry, vermin-free location.
All these ‘extra steps’ prolong the shelf life of your stockpile.
But as you can see, there are several steps in this process…
You need to educate yourself to avoid any costly mistakes.
And small mistakes can jeopardize your hard work.
And so far, all we’ve talked about is bulk foods like rice and beans.
But nobody wants to eat plain rice and beans forever.
Yes, that can work for short-term emergencies.
But eating unseasoned rice and beans gets old fast.
So, add seasonings and spices to your stockpile as well.
Plus, get some other tasty items, such as peanut butter powder.
Food Rotation
And this is where food rotation comes into play.
If you buy five large jars of peanut butter, consume them from oldest to newest.
When your family finishes one jar, consume the oldest remaining peanut butter next.
And then buy a new peanut butter to add to the back of your inventory.
The same idea goes for grocery store canned goods or anything under a decade of shelf life.
This is food rotation; it’s a process.
You must stick to it.
If you don’t rotate, food will expire and spoil.
Which would be a waste of energy, time, and money.
Or worse, if you try consuming it out of desperation, you could get severely ill.
It’s the last thing you want in a worst-case emergency.
But again, DIY food stockpiling is the most affordable way to stockpile calories.
No argument here.
Do it right to avoid disastrous mistakes.
I do some of both.
- I bought food from (Valley Food Storage).
- AND I’ve bought lots of rice and beans a grocer as well.
7. Daily Multivitamins
Stock up on some good daily multivitamins.
After SHTF, getting all the essential nutrients in your diet won’t be easy.
A daily dose multivitamin ensures you’re getting everything you need.
Plus, you can use them as a barter item in a pinch.
Anyone severely nutrition deficient will trade A LOT for them.
8. Cooking Fuel Source
Never assume you’ll have access to standard cooking methods.
I’m talking about natural gas or electricity.
But to cook your meals, you’ll need to boil water (for freeze-dried meals).
There are several ways to do this:
- You could stockpile kerosene.
- You could look at propane.
- Or you could buy a small heater stove with fuel canisters.
But fuel is complicated to store in large quantities.
And can create a safety hazard.
So, firewood is the best solution for most.
Lots and lots of firewood.
You need space to store a lot of firewood (so there are tradeoffs).
But firewood will provide an alternative heat source necessary to boil water.
- Get a rocket stove to maximize your firewood (rocket stoves boil water quickly with less fuel)
- Or you could use a Weber grill (if you stockpile charcoal)
- Or even use a Dutch oven in a backyard fire pit.
Another “cooking” option is using the power of the Sun.
The Sun Oven
Using the Sun to cook is an ancient practice.
But nowadays, it’s easier than ever with a solar oven.
The Sun Oven is an incredible invention.
It’s a must-own device for most preppers.
It’s not the cheapest piece of gear you’ll buy.
But it’s one of the best.
And the Sun Oven even works on partly cloudy days.
Plus, if you’re not in a hurry, you can use it to boil water.
So, this device ensures you can cook your meals in an emergency.
↓ 10 Prepper Supplies To Stockpile BEFORE The Next Crisis
Clothes & Warmth Tools
Most of us have more clothes than we know what to do with.
A massive lineup of unworn garments crammed into the back of the closet.
Unloved and forgotten.
But acquiring a few ‘extras’ is a good idea when planning for the worst.
Because after a disaster, purchasing new clothes will be off the table.
You’ll have to make do with what you have.
But not all clothes are created equal.
Focus on sturdy and warm attire (especially if you live in cooler climates).
9. Spare Clothes
You need extra tough and warm clothes.
I recommend:
Take inventory; make sure you’re comfortable with your spares.
Warmth and longevity are way more important than fashion.
That’s why I trust brands such as Carhartt.
10. Sewing | Supplies
Home Economics 101 – Sewing.
It’s not quite a lost art (yet)…
But the trend is not looking good.
But YOU don’t have to fall victim to today’s throw-away society.
Don’t you dare toss those blue jeans with a hole in the knees!
Instead, mend my friend.
Get a sewing kit and learn how to patch ‘em up.
Don’t plan on using a sewing machine because they rely on electricity.
Unless you produce plenty of off-grid power.
If so, then you can rely on a sewing machine.
Because you’re not affected should the grid go down.
For everyone else, get a sewing kit and learn how to use it.
11. Survival Gloves
I almost lumped gloves with the rest of the “spare clothes” category.
But then I thought better of it…
Tactical gloves are crucial for protecting your hands from:
- Cold
- Splinters
- Cuts & Scraps
- Pinches
- Etc.
Because even a scraped knuckle could turn into a deadly infection without antibiotics.
And with the right set of tactical gloves, you won’t lose dexterity.
That way, you can use your survival knife (or a firearm) without taking them off.
So, stock up on several.
12. Tactical Boots
Tactical boots also deserves its own category.
Because healthy feet are a critical resource in survival mode.
If you don’t care for your feet, you’ll become a liability in an emergency.
Blisters, bruises, and rolled ankles will slow you down.
So, don’t go cheap on footwear.
- A good set of tactical boots can last a very long time
- While a cheap pair will wear out in months
There’s a reason why soldiers often stole the boots off a dead comrade in WWI.
If the boots were the same size and in better shape, they upgraded on the spot.
13. Stocking Cap | Neck Gaiters
If you live in cooler climates, you already have a few stocking caps.
And probably a few high-quality neck gaiters as well.
Because venturing into the cold without proper gear can lead to frostbite (or hypothermia).
So, bundling up is your best line of defense.
If you’re looking for a good neck gaiter, go withthis one by American Gunner.

Midnight Camo
This cloth face shield provides the following:
- Ultimate UV Protection
- Protection From Wind & Snow
- It’s Lightweight & Breathable
- Perfect For Hunting, Fishing, Biking & Bugging Out
- Protection From Insects
- One Size Fits All
Choose between Black | Midnight Camo | American Wood
14. Hand and Toe Warmers
Add a few body-warming packets to your bug out bag…just in case.
But save them for serious emergencies only.
For example:
To prevent the onset of frostbite.
Because you can’t afford to lose your fingers or toes in survival.
That would be “game over”…
15. Rain Poncho (with A Hood)
Nothing drains heat from your body (and soul) faster than hiking in drenched clothes.
It’s miserable in the warm.
And dangerous in the cold.
This Princeton study shows:“Generally conductive heat loss accounts for only about 2% of the overall loss. However, with wet clothes, the loss is increased 5x.”So, add a few ponchos to your stockpile.
And they’re lightweight and take up very little space.
- Get one with a hood to keep the rain off your dome
- Make sure it’s durable and won’t tear on the first branch it sees
Yes, one with these features costs more…
But it’s worth it because if you’re cold and wet, hypothermia is coming.

Heating & Warmth Supplies
What’s your backup heat plan?
Perhaps it’s a stockpile of kerosene and a heater.
But unless you stockpile a lot, you’ll run fast…
This solution won’t last an entire winter, right?
So, what’s a well-prepared survivalist to do?
16. Traditional Woodstove
This might only be possible for some.
But it’s the BEST option.
Wood stoves are an incredible invention.
Having a wood stove and a massive pile of firewood is a dream setup for preppers.
The newest models can heat an entire home using very little firewood.
But abundant firewood access is a must.
Maybe you’re blessed with access to downed trees on your property.
These trees equate to “free” heat to keep you warm all winter long.
If you can’t install a large wood stove, get a smaller, portable tent stove instead.
These are miniature wood stoves perfect for camping OR an emergency.
Port the fumes outside to prevent toxic air buildup.
17. Alternative Energy and Traditional Heater
Another option is to pair a traditional heater with alternative energy.
Here are the most popular options:
- Hydro-Electric (water wheel)
- Bio Gas Generator
- Solar Panels
- Solar Powered Generators
- Wind Turbines
- Bicycle Generator
Each of these energy sources has its pros and cons.
- Some can be scaled up, while others cannot.
- For some, investing in one extensive system makes sense.
- While others may prefer to build several smaller ones.
The bottom line is:
Getting off the grid is a real game-changer.
Not only for heat but everything we use electricity for.
18. Tact Bivvy
The unprepared will eventually run out of furniture to burn.
So, instead, get an emergency sleeping bag.
One for each family member.
Because the coldest hours occur in the middle of the night.
When you’re asleep!
These bitter cold temps and lack of activity are a real danger.
A bivy is a survival tool to prevent this horrible outcome.
The best ones trap 90+% of your body heat.
Traditional sleeping bags also do this, but they’re not as good at it.
They’re made from cotton or synthetic polymers.
They don’t hold in your body heat like a Tact Bivvy.
A Tact Bivvy is made with a space-age material that traps up to 90% of your body heat.
So even on the coldest nights, you’ll stay above freezing-to-death temps.
Even better, pair this TACT Bivvy with a high-quality, low-temperature sleeping bag.
And the combo will up your chances of surviving the cold in a pinch.
Heck, even if you DO have a wood stove, you should still invest as a “last resort.”
And it makes sense to store one in your vehicle’s glove box for winter emergencies.
So get one for each family member and put one in every vehicle you own.

Small Energy Devices
Next up are a few small devices you can use to generate some electricity.
19. BioLite CampStove 2+
CampStove 2+
Most new technologies make our society more complacent (and less self-reliant).
But that doesn’t mean ALL new technologies are bad.
Some do the opposite…
They make us MORE self-reliant.
The BioLite CampStove 2+ is such a technology…here’s why.
It cooks your food and charges your smartphone at the same time.
To me, this portable stove that kills two birds with one stone.
This is a dream scenario for prepared survivalists.
20. Light-Weight Rugged Solar Charger
Most of us will have some electronics in our emergency kits, right?
And these electronics are worthless without electricity!
So, add a solar charger to your prep list.
Skilled Survival’s go-to charger is the Anytime Charge Solar Power Bank.
Why? Because it’s one of the most durable, compact, and cost-effective ones on the market today.
But don’t let its compact size fool you.
It has a massive 10,000 mAh battery!
This battery storage is enough to charge ALL your devices multiple times over.
Plus, with dual charging outputs, you can charge multiple devices simultaneously!
Simply plug in your devices and press the power button.
Your device will begin to charge immediately.
And recharging with the Anytime Solar Bank couldn’t be easier.
Just leave it in the sun, and it will fill the battery bank ANYWHERE.
Plus, it’s splash-resistant and comes with an emergency flashlight in a pinch.
NOTE: When this article was published, you could snag some bonus Tactical Flashlights For FREE when you buy multiple Anytime Solar Chargers.

Fire-Starting Tools & Gear
Fire is lifeblood in survival.
You need it to:
- Purify water
- Cook food
- Nighttime warmth and safety
- And it’s a morale booster
But if your lighter runs out or your matches get wet?
Well, then you’re out of luck…
Unless you stock up on some backup fire-starting tools.
EVERYONE should stock three independent fire-starting tools…
21. Stormproof Matches
UCO Stormproof Match Kit
These Storm Proof Matches are the real deal.
Regular matches are not good enough.
When cardboard matches get wet, they’re worthless.
But with these, you can dunk them, stomp on them, break them, and they’ll still light.
And while having a nice stash of survival matches is wise, it’s not enough…
You should also invest in a Ferro Rod Striker.
22. Ferro Rod Striker
Ferro Rods work great if you know what you’re doing.
This fire striker is fantastic, with 20,000+ strikes.
With this affordable Ferro rod, you’ll never run out of sparks again.
Just make sure you practice with it before relying on it for emergencies.
23. Electric Lighter
A lighter is a lighter, right? Not anymore.
- Will a cheap BIC lighter work after dropping it in a river? Nope.
- Will a cheap BIC lighter’s flame stay lit in 80 MPH winds? Nope.
That’s why you should spend a few extra dollars on this new tool:
A Rechargeable Coil Lighter
Why? Because this lighter doesn’t use fuel.
It uses electricity to create a windproof and waterproof arc.
Plus, it recharges by USB port.
Recharge with an electrical outlet, solar charger, or hand crank radio.
Or pair a Tough Tesla lighter with an ANYTIME solar charger, and you’ll ALWAYS have the power of fire.
No matter what comes…
24. Tinder
Skilled survivalists can find tinder in the wilderness.
But what about regular folks?
Most use old, crumpled-up newspapers.
But what happens when the junk mail stops showing up?
Tinder is one area many people overlook…
Because they don’t realize just how hard it is to start a fire without tinder.
Here are some options that work well for this.
Or you can go with cotton balls…
And you can buy them in bulk.
They work even better with a small dab of Vaseline.
And Vaseline is another fantastic item to stock.
25. Small Magnifying Glass | Fresnel Lens
Use a Fresnel lens to start a fire.
Magnification focuses light into dense energy.
Dense energy is full of heat.
This energy can start a fire.
Fresnel Lenses are a wise backup Firestarter to add to your supplies.
First Aid Kits & Medical Supplies
Never rely solely on medical professionals in a worst-case, prolonged emergency.
Why? Because they won’t be available (they’ll be home saving their own families).
OR hospitals are too dangerous and must be avoided.
In either case, we may face the reality of becoming our own physicians.
Plan for it.
You’ll want basic tools and knowledge to care for your family’s medical needs.
Start with first aid supplies.
26. Personal Medications
Stock up on as much personal medications as you can.
There’s NO guarantee you can get more in a worst-case emergency.
27. Antibiotics
Got survival antibiotics?
Before the invention of antibiotics, even a tiny scratch could turn deadly.
Infections are hard to beat, especially once they enter the bloodstream.
In a worst-case disaster, doctors may not be available.
And impossible to get an antibiotic prescription.
Instead, you have to survive on what you stockpiled.
THAT’s why antibiotics are on this list.
However, there’s no easy way to load up on prescription antibiotics.
Doctors control the amount each patient can purchase.
So, the next best thing is to get a variety of antibiotics for fish and bird antibiotics.
Do some more research on which varieties to buy.
The bottom line is:
I’d rather have “something” to fight an infection than be a helpless victim in a crisis.
28. Wound Gauze Roll
Gauze is the ideal dressing for bad cuts or severe burns.
It’s light and takes up very little space.
29. Surgical Tape
This stuff is made to keep gauze, pads, and bandages in place.
30. Band-Aids | Mole Skin Pads
Band-Aids are the best solution for minor cuts and lacerations.
They help keep open wounds clean and protected.
This can prevent an infection from developing.
You should also add a few moleskin pads for blisters.
Band-Aids don’t stay in place on active feet, but moleskin will.
31. Neosporin (or similar salve)
Add this cream to any cut or laceration to prevent infections.
32. Pain Killers
For minor aches and pains, these can keep you going.
Painkillers will take the edge off of serious injuries.
You should also consider foraging wild lettuce, a natural pain remedy.
33. Vaseline
We mentioned Vaseline earlier as a fire accelerant.
But this stuff is great for chapped lips, dry skin, and rashes.
Add some to your medical kit.
34. Blood Clotting Sponge
Nasty, deep wounds won’t clot on their own.
You must apply intense pressure to the wound for a long time.
These Quick Clot Sponges help with this life-or-death effort.
35. Super Glue
Super glue can seal up small cuts.
Plus, it comes in handy for other survival uses.
36. Sterile Alcohol Pads
Clean all wounds early and often with these alcohol wipes.
They help clean wounds, killing infection-causing bacteria.
37. Hydrogen Peroxide
Use hydrogen peroxide to keep wounds clean and bacteria-free.
38. Tourniquet
IF you need one, you’ll be thankful you stocked it.
Tourniquets help stop blood loss in a severed leg or arteries.
Belts work in a pinch, but you’d rather have the real deal.
39. Cotton Swabs
Use Q-tips to clean your ears.
Excess wax in your ears can lead to infection.
And buildup muffles your hearing.
Clear hearing is a survival advantage.
They’re also ideal for applying small dabs of medical salves.
Lastly, tear off the cotton ends and use them as tinder.
They’re lightweight and valuable, so buy a few hundred.
40. Tweezers and Nail Clippers
Pack a sharp set of tweezers.
They get slivers out fast.
Add a good set of nail clippers to avoid hangnails.
I bite my nails and occasionally get an infected hangnail.
Once my finger got so infected, I had to take pain pills.
And I lost my entire fingernail a few weeks later.
Don’t make the same mistake.
Take care of your nails properly.
41. Insect Repellent
Mosquitos are a nuisance and can transmit diseases.
So add some repellent spray with high amounts of DEET.
42. Sunscreen
Stock up on a decent amount of this stuff.
Save it for the worst days only.
Otherwise, keep your skin covered with long sleeves and hats (even on warm days).
Get one with an SPF30, like this one.
Higher SPFs are just a marketing ploy.
Personal Hygiene Prepper Supplies
IF you enjoy daily hot showers, get ready for an abrupt change.
Water will be hard to come by post-disaster.
Heating it to comfortable levels will be an extreme luxury.
Why? Because it takes a ton of energy to heat water.
And how will you create the pressure to run water through a showerhead?
So after SHTF, it’ll be the return of the occasional bath; like in ancient times.
The point is:
Modern hygiene and sanitation depend on grid power and water distribution systems.
If these modern wonders go away…
Your hygiene will suffer!
43. Soap
Stock up on soap.
That way, you can maintain some cleanliness.
Nothing fancy.
Don’t pay extra for skin moisturizing or scented.
Get something affordable and effective like Zote Soap.
Buy in bulk.
Also, learn how to make your own soap.
It’s easier than you think.
44. Razor Blades
There are a TON of uses for razor blades.
One of which is shaving.
Now, I don’t plan on shaving in an emergency. I’m going full ZZ top.
But if that’s not your thing, stock up on plenty.
45. Oral Hygiene
Tooth decay and pain are the WORST!
Cavities, gingivitis, abscess, etc.
Without access to dental procedures, you’ll have to live with these issues.
So the best way to avoid them…is to prevent them.
Invest heavily in oral hygiene.
Toothbrushes, toothpaste, and a bunch of dental floss.
46. Female Hygiene
Stockpile a bunch of tampons or invest in a menstrual cup.
Ultimately, the choice is yours.
47. Hand Sanitizer
Use a hand sanitizer to clean your hands before eating.
Ingesting bacteria can create stomach issues or illnesses.
Diarrhea can become deadly in an emergency.
Again, prevention is best.
48. Toilet Paper
For short-term emergencies, stockpile toilet paper.
However, you need a plan for a longer-term emergency.
Compost toilets are something serious preppers invest in.

Essential Hand Tools
Power tools are just expensive paperweights without electricity.
So, stock up on some hand tools.
Old school, yes, but guaranteed to work in an emergency.
49. Hammers
Any head of household worth their salt has one standard claw hammer.
A good one will last you a lifetime.
And for most, that’s all you’ll ever need.
However, there are a few specialty hammers, such as:
- Ball-peen hammer
- Rubber mallet
- Sledgehammer
- Etc.
50. Shovels
Digging in an emergency may be required.
But not for planting trees…
To dig a latrine trench or an outhouse pit.
Get a sturdy one.
You may also want a few specialty shovels, such as:
- A snow shovel
- A small hand trowel
- A survival shovel
51. Survival Knife
I can’t stress enough the importance of a high-quality survival knife.
Research the best survival knives before buying.
Find one that best meets your needs.
Because a survival knife has so many survival uses.
Then. once you’ve found “the one,” learn how to use it.
Also, get a sharpener.
It would be a shame to allow such an important tool to become dull and useless.
52. Pliers
Pliers do things human hands cannot.
Most DIY projects require a set of pliers.
And there’s a wide variety:
- standard pliers
- needle nose pliers
- vice grips
- adjustable wrench
- and monkey wrench
To name a few.
You should also get a bench vise.
While this is not technically a plier, it performs a similar function.
It holds items firmly in place so you can work with both hands.
53. Saws
There are several types of saws you’ll want to add to your stockpile.
Let’s name a few:
- folding handsaw
- hacksaw
- pole saw
- two men saw
- coping saw
- etc.
Carpentry will be desirable in survival mode.
Having these tools (and knowing how to use them) will be in high demand.
Wise in a barter economy.
54. Hatchets and Axes
Wood is an essential resource for cooking and warmth.
But not only THAT.
It’s also necessary to build things.
Before you can build things out of wood, you have to process a tree into lumber.
The ancient way to split trees into lumber was with a sturdy axe.
The bottom line is:
You should own at least one hatchet (at a minimum).
55. Hand Grain Mill
Let’s move from shop to kitchen.
Many people forget to get a hand mill or grinder.
But it’s the best way to turn whole grains into flour without electricity.
If you don’t have one, get one.
Otherwise you’ll have to use a stone and pestle.
But trust me:
You’ll want to avoid this slow and tedious process.
56. Well Hand Pump
IF you live on well water, do you have a backup pump?
One that doesn’t rely on grid power to run.
If NOT, you should invest in a hand well pump or a solar-powered water pump.
Otherwise, you’ll get completely cutoff from your life saving H2O.
THAT’s a very fragile way to live.
Illumination Devices
Illumination is necessary for all sorts of tasks.
- You’ll need a source of light to work in complete darkness.
- You’ll need it to move to see where you’re going.
I can’t imagine surviving an emergency without them.
Attempting to do so puts you at an extreme disadvantage.
57. Super Bright LED Headlamp
Two words:
- Hands
- Free
Getting a bright one with rechargeable batteries.
You’ll also need a way to recharge them.
That’s where a portable solar charger comes in handy.
58. Bright LED Tactical Flashlight
While a headlamp is a good start, get a few LED Tactical Flashlights as well.
Flashlights give you more control.
You can shine it in multiple directions without turning your head..
Get one that’s super bright but only needs a single AA battery.
That way, you don’t have to stock any unique battery sizes.
Check out our FireHawk Tactical Flashlight, which you can get for FREE by covering the reasonable S&H.
↓ Get A FREE FireHawk Tactical Flashlight (+S&H)
59. LED Lantern
What if you want to illuminate an entire room?
This is where LED lanterns come in.
Again, get one that uses standard-sized batteries.
60. Glow Sticks
Glow sticks work great for emergencies.
They signal a warning and provide general illumination.
But they can give away your position to potential threats.
So only use if THAT’s not a primary concern.
Communication Devices
Intelligence is crucial to survival.
Gathering and sharing information can improve your chances of success.
Whether it’s a weather forecast or knowing the location of threats.
The more you know, the better you can prepare, adapt, and overcome.
It’s one of your main defense tactics.
Now, the fragile masses think I’m talking about cell phones.
But THAT’s a mistake.
Cell phone signals vary even in good times.
It’s a terrible solution for a widespread disaster.
You need reliable, foolproof communication.
61. Hand Crank AM/FM/NOAA Digital Radio
You’ll want a way to get updates on how the “situation” is progressing.
This is critical to planning your ‘next move.’
Providing confidence you’re heading AWAY from danger and NOT into it.
Hand-cranked radios do this AND without batteries.
IT’s a surefire way to get intel over emergency broadcasts.
↓ Hand Crank Radio Review – Eton Microlink Review
62. Two-Way Radio Walkie-Talkies
Walkie-Talkies are an essential tool for a local survival group.
If your team separates you’ll be able to keep in touch at short distances.
The best ones can even work at a distance of up to several miles.
63. HAM Radio Setup
A HAM radio is the best way to communicate long distances in an emergency.
- Hand crank radios are listen-only devices.
- Walkie-talkies are local only.
A HAM radio removes both limitations.
Some folks are even able to communicate around the world.

Self Defense Tools
In SHTF, you’ll be the hunter or the hunted.
Are you prepared to defend yourself from threats?
If not, these are the items you should get ASAP.
64. Survival Firearms
So, which firearm is best for survival?
To be honest, I could write an entire book on the subject.
It’s a very personal choice.
One with lots of nuances to consider.
The good news is:
You don’t have to choose just one or two guns.
You can invest in an entire arsenal of firepower if you’d like.
Stock up on several and a TON of ammo as well.
65. Ammunition
Ammo is to prepping like water is to life; essential.
There’s a reason why there are ammo shortages after a crisis.
Millions start stocking up on as much as they can get their hands on.
Are you?
Ammo is essential for self-defense.
Without it, your high-powered rifle becomes a shitty baseball bat.
That’s why ammo is a precious commodity in a worst-case disaster.
That’s why it’s not a bad idea to make ammo a primary stockpile item.
66. Bow and Arrows
The bow and arrow has several advantages over firearms.
- Arrows are reusable
- Bows are quiet to shoot
- Less regulated
- Easier to repair
- Etc.
Here’s a longer list of reasons to invest in a recurve crossbow.
67. Home Defense Items
You should fortify your home.
Make it a HARD target for intruders.
This prevents rogues, thieves, or bandits from breaking into (or targeting) your home.
Tools such as outdoor motion detection lighting and security alarm systems, etc.
But today, I want to highlight two lesser-known home defense tools.
Why? Because MOST break-ins occur through first-floor doors and windows.
67(a). Armor Concepts Door Armor
Door Reinforcement Armor
Armor Concepts sells door armor!
Door Armor is a patented security device to reinforce your existing doors.
These products help you do just that!
And the cost of these products is very reasonable.
Watch this video on how well it works:
↓ Door Armor Testing (how does it hold up?)
67(b). Window Security Film
Window Security Film
If you’re serious about protecting your windows, read our article on Security Film.
It covers details I don’t have time to discuss here…
In general, there are several types of film.
Or even burglar bars, riot glass, or security screens.
But a quick, good-looking upgrade is window security film.
67(c). Motion Trigger Lights
Most criminals prefer to work in the cover of darkness.
Use this to your advantage.
Most people have lighting at their front and back doors.
But not the sides or detached sheds.
Keeping your perimeter well-lit is essential for fortification.
It’s easy with motion-sensing solar lights.
68. Camouflage
I’m a big fan of camouflage….probably because I’m a duck hunter.
I’ve got a set of real tree 3D printed pants, jacket, waders, and hat.
Well, in a long-term emergency, camouflage is also essential for home defense.
Why? Because if you use a scouting system, you’ll want the scouts to disappear.
They want to see but not be seen.
Take things up a notch and go with a ghillie suit.
These will keep you hidden in natural surroundings.
Want a free 78 item bug out bag checklist?
Enter your email below to instantly download this Complete Checklist PDF. No purchase necessary. 👇 👇Misc. Tools & Prepper Supplies
Here are a few random items that didn’t fit into other categories.
69. Rechargeable Batteries
Rechargeable batteries in all the sizes you need for your gear.
Or consider these new USB rechargeable batteries.
They’re an excellent device to own in an emergency.
70. Gold & Silver
Stockpiling rare metals is a good idea.
Sure, you can’t drink it; you can’t eat it; you can’t shoot it.
But gold acts as a hedge against inflation.
And it’s held its value in times of financial crisis.
So, having gold or silver in a collapsed lawless society gives you powerful trade options.
71. Paper and Pencils
Today, paper is abundant.
But what if it wasn’t?
IT was extremely beneficial before the modern era.
And it may become useful again after WWIII.
It’s also necessary for art hobbies, like drawing.
So, stash a box or 2, along with some number 2 pencils.
72. All Forms Of Entertainment
Keeping one’s sanity will be important in a collapse.
There will be no TV or internet, video games, or social media to fill your hours.
Instead, stash a few excellent books.
Ones you don’t mind reading again and again!
Also, books on DIY projects or survival skills are worth a spot in your home library.
Puzzles are a great way to keep your mind occupied and challenged.
Classic strategy games such as chess will also pass the time.
Board games are fun for adults and kids alike.
Playing cards can be used to play hundreds of different forms of strategic games, like:
- poker
- gin rummy
- solitary
- etc.
Or even simple games like “slapjack” or “war” we played as kids.
↓ 10 Prepper Supplies EVERYONE Is Overlooking
73. Corrective Lenses
Some of us are at a survival disadvantage without corrective lenses.
Get at least one extra set of glasses, preferably 2.
They don’t need to be designer frames.
It’s better if they’re NOT.
Look for a sturdy pair at a low price point.
You can also stock up on contact lenses.
But you’ll also need cleaning agents and cases, etc.
74. Duct Tape
There are lots of survival uses for duct tape.
Check out The Daily Sheeple’s 25 Survival Uses For Duct Tape.
Look for a bulk deal online and stock up on this essential “DIY” item.
75. Scissors
Often, a good knife can substitute for a pair of scissors, but not always.
Make sure you have a sharp pair lying around your house.
76. Gas Masks and Filters
As humans, we breathe all day, every day, for the remainder of our lives…
From our first breath to our last.
But we die after about 3 minutes without it.
Now, oxygen won’t just disappear.
But it can become poisoned or infected!
So, stock up on a good gas mask and filters.
You may never need a gas mask, but if you do, you’ll be glad you did.
Without a doubt – MIRA Safety has the best gas masks on the market today.
I bought the CM-6M mask and several filters for myself.
↓ MIRA Safety Gas Mask Review
77. Electrical Tape
Electrical tape has a lot of survival uses beyond electrical.
The stuff stretches and sticks; there’s nothing quite like it.
78. Vices
Vices help cope with stressful situations.
And nothing is more stressful than a widespread crisis, right?
Stock up on alcohol, cigarettes, or even dirty magazines (if that’s your thing).
Not necessarily to consume but to trade with.
A case of whiskey will last forever and hold its value.
Prepping Checklist – Final Thoughts
My advice is to ta**ke action TODAY using this checklist.
Focus on the highest priority items: food, water, medicine, guns, and ammo.
After that, round out the rest of the supplies.
Over time, you’ll amass an impressive list of critical survival items.
But don’t forget, disasters arrive when we least expect them.
And complacency kills…
I recommend you check out My Patriot Supply or 4Patriots today.

Prepper supplies: 30 Survival uses for coffee filters
Tuesday, January 17, 2023 by: Zoey Sky
Tags: bugout, coffee filters, Gear, homesteading, off grid, preparedness, prepping, prepping tips, self sufficiency, self-reliance, survival, survival gear

(Natural News) Non-preppers use coffee filters to make coffee, but preppers know that this useful item is a must-have for your survival stockpile.
If you’re looking for a firestarter or makeshift insulator, stock up on coffee filters and learn about this item’s many survival uses. (h/t to AskAPrepper.com)
Absorb spills
If you accidentally spill something and you have to clean it in a hurry, place a coffee filter over the spill and blot it up with a paper towel.
A coffee filter is absorbent and it will help soak up the majority of the liquid, which can help prevent clothes or furniture from being ruined.
Alternative for rags and towels
You can use coffee filters to dust furniture or clean windows instead of rags or towels.
Apply calamine lotion
If you hate getting calamine lotion all over your hands, place a generous dollop on a coffee filter and use that to apply the lotion to your skin instead. The filter will help absorb any excess lotion so it doesn’t end up on your skin or clothes.
Bug protection
If you don’t have any bug spray, you can use coffee filters as a makeshift mosquito net.
Poke holes in the center of the filter and wear it over your head like a hood. The tiny holes will keep bugs out while still allowing you to breathe comfortably as you work outdoors.
Cloth diaper liner
If you use cloth diapers for your baby, use clean coffee filters as a liner. Coffee filters are great liners because they’re cheap, disposable and biodegradable.
Place a filter inside the diaper before putting it on your baby to catch solid waste. When the diaper is dirty, remove the liner and its contents, then wash the diaper.
DIY bandage
If you don’t have a first aid kit, use coffee filters as bandages or dressings for wounds.
The absorbent nature of the filter will help to soak up blood and other fluids and the paper material will keep the wound clean and protected from infection.
Dry wet clothing
Place small wet items inside a coffee filter and leave them to dry in the sun or close to a fire to dry out. The coffee filter will help absorb some of the moisture so your clothes dry faster.
Emergency toilet paper
If you run out of toilet paper, use coffee filters as an alternative. Make sure you dispose of the used coffee filters properly.
Firestarters
Coffee filters soaked in wax are great DIY firestarters because they light easily and burn for a long time.
To make coffee filter firestarters, soak the filter in wax, let it dry and store it in an airtight container. Keep the container in your bug-out bag or firestarting kit so you can start a fire quickly when SHTF.
Keep insects out of food
Place a coffee filter over the top of food supplies in your stockpile to keep insects out.
Keep produce fresh
Line a fruit bowl or vegetable crisper with coffee filters to help keep produce fresh longer. The filters will absorb excess moisture, which helps prevent mold and rot from setting in.
Keep soil in the pot
Use coffee filters as transient liners for pots full of soil. Line the pot with the filter before adding your soil and plants.
When it’s time to transplant them into a larger pot or into the ground, the filter will prevent the soil from falling out as you work.
Make a cold compress
Soak a coffee filter in cold water to make a temporary cold compress and apply it to a bruise or insect bite to help reduce swelling.
Make a funnel
Prevent spills by using a coffee filter to make a funnel.
Cut the bottom off of a coffee filter to make a funnel so you can easily pour powders or liquids into small containers.
Make an oil lamp
Use coffee filters to make an oil lamp if you need light.
First, take a coffee filter and roll it up. Next, fill a glass jar with some vegetable oil and soak the coffee filter all the way inside.
Light up the filter and you will have light for a few hours.
Make a pair of gloves
If you need gloves for chores that will make your hands dirty and you don’t have an extra pair, cut two holes near the top of two separate coffee filters large enough for your hands to fit through.
Wear these “gloves” while finishing your task and dispose of them when you’re done.
Make tea
If you love tea but you’ve run out of tea bags, improvise by using a coffee filter instead.
Place loose tea leaves inside the filter, then secure it with string or a rubber band before steeping it in hot water to make your tea.
Remove odor
If you spilled ashes on your clothing or in your hair, rub them away with a dry coffee filter.
Coffee filters can also be used to remove unwanted odors like shoes. If you have a pair of shoes that are smelling funky, place one inside a shoe to absorb unpleasant smells.
For a better result, add baking soda inside the coffee filters and secure it with a bit of string or a rubber band.
Pet food dish
If you need to feed your pet dog but don’t have a pet bowl on hand, use a coffee filter. Just place the food in the center and your pet should be able to eat without making too much of a mess.
You can also use a coffee filter as a pet poop scooper. Bring coffee filters while hiking or taking your dog on a walk to the park so you can easily clean up their poop.
Portable food wrapper
If you’re going camping and you ran out of sandwich bags, use coffee filters to wrap your food in.
The paper is strong enough to prevent leaks and tears, but lightweight enough that it won’t add too much bulk or weight to your bag.
To pre-filter water you’ve collected
When SHTF, use a coffee filter to pre-filter the water you collected. Use coffee filters to remove large particles from water before running it through your main water filter.
Protect skillets from rust
Cast-iron skillets are prone to rusting while in storage.
Place a coffee filter in the bottom of your skillet before storing it for a long time to protect it from rusting.
Sore throat relief
If you have a sore throat, soak a coffee filter in warm water, then lay it over your throat like a compress. The warmth and moisture from the compress will help to soothe your sore throat.
Sprout garden seeds
If you want to sprout seeds for your garden, soak the seeds overnight. Next, place them on a coffee filter moistened with water then fold up the filter and place it in a resealable baggie.
Store garden seeds
Once the gardening season is over, save some seeds from your best-performing plants so you can replant them next year.
Place the seeds on a dry coffee filter and fold it up. Store the filter in an airtight container in a cool, dark place until spring arrives.
Temporary insulator
If you need a temporary insulator, use coffee filters to insulate your home.
If you have a drafty window or door, cut a coffee filter to size and tape it over the opening to help keep the warm air in and the cold air out.
Temporary survival straw
Use a clean coffee filter to make a temporary survival straw so you can filter water on the go. Cut the top and bottom off of a coffee filter and roll it into a cone shape.
Cut a small slit in the bottom of the filter and insert one end of a drinking straw. Suck the water up through the straw to drink filtered water wherever you are.
Trap cooking grease
Place a coffee filter over the top of a pan while cooking to trap grease splatters. (Related: Natural healing: Survival uses for coconut oil.)
Write notes
If you need to leave an emergency note and you don’t have paper or a notepad, get a coffee filter and write your message on a coffee filter.
The thin paper is perfect for writing down notes or lists.
Disposable bowl or plate
If you don’t have water to wash the dishes, use a clean coffee filter as a plate.
Make sure you don’t put too much food on them or they will collapse and make a mess as you eat.
Stock up on useful survival items like coffee filters before SHTF so you can make firestarters or leave messages.

The Best SHTF Gear List and Plan (2024)
Corporal Wabo January 13, 2021
This site contains affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate, I earn a commission from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you. Full Disclosure Here.
The collapse of industrialized civilization isn’t as far-fetched as many people think. With the ever-increasing amount of corruption, global conflict, natural disasters, and tension amongst world leaders only a fool would not take notice.
As the world becomes an increasingly dangerous place, it seems like the average person is becoming more dependent on the government and mass disruption channels.
This is a recipe for disaster.
I mean, think about the chaos that would ensue if we couldn’t get our 2-day Amazon Prime deliveries and the Walmart shelves were no longer being restocked. Honestly, very few people are actually properly prepared for even minor situations, let alone worse case scenarios.
That’s why you need to have the right SHTF gear, plan, and essential items so you’re part of the solution and not part of the problem.
Along with essential items like food and water, it’s also important to have a means of self-defense.
Because don’t forget, like my favorite Comedian Bill Burr says.“If you don’t have a way to protect yourself, you’re just gathering supplies for the toughest guy on the block!”In desperate times people will do desperate things… so don’t forget about having a means of self defense handy in-case of a shit hits the fan situation. We all have witnessed the looting and hysteria that follows emergencies, like what we saw with Hurricane Katrina. Police are spread thin, so it’s important to stay self-reliant.
By taking simple steps, like developing the best SHTF plan possible for you and your family, life will be a whole lot simpler should something happen.
Below, I wrote out an in-depth gear list, as well as some good plans you can follow if shit hits the fan. You can use the navigation menu below if you’re interested in just one particular area.

SHTF Meaning?
The acronym SHTF means when shit hits the fan. It’s a situation associated with chaos, panic, and unpredictability. Having a SHTF plan ready is a good way to prepare for the unknown and will allow you to stay self-reliant. People sometimes jab at preppers for being paranoid, but preppers don’t mind because they know the people who look at them as “weird” will be exactly the type asking them for help.
Every time I turn on the news there is chaos in the world. Shit is hitting the fan big time, whether it be due to a flood, hurricane, or other situation. It’s crazy how helpless people are.
Just think…
When even when just a relatively minor storm or threat is coming people rush to store and stock up on the essentials in-case they can’t make it out for a few days.
But…
The store shelves quickly thin… I’m from Pennsylvania, and even when a minor snow storm is coming this happens. Now just think of all the potential SHTF scenarios that could arise. People will lose their minds.
Consider the Current State of Things
Think about some of the current world leaders, I’m not going to mention anyone specifically, *cough*… Rocket Man. They aren’t exactly trustworthy or stable. They’re one bad day away from turning the world upside down.
Are you ready?
We’ve all seen images of the aftermath of hurricanes, tsunamis, wicked floods, and seemingly endless wars in many countries, like many in the Middle East. While some of these scenarios are unlikely, I think you get the idea, you need to be ready. Ask yourself, are you ready if a situation like that comes to an area near you?
It’s also important to have a SHTF plan ready for every season. For example, if SHTF in the winter you’ll need a lot more gear to stay warm/alive.
Types of SHTF Situations:
- Extreme Weather
- Rapid Economic Downturn
- Natural Disasters
- Terrorism
- War
- Nuclear Attack
- Attack on central power grids (EMP Blast)
- Mass sickness / Epidemic – Ebola, Zica, Sars,
Having the proper gear is very smart if you truly want to be prepared for any situation. Ben Franklin was a smart guy, we should all take his advice! Here is a quote from him below.
By failing to prepare, You are preparing to fail.Benjamin FranklinSHTF Gear List and What You Need to Know
There are some people actually hoping for a SHTF situation. They are tired of all the needy people that constantly complain. I will admit, sometimes it seems like the world needs to hit the reset button, but we need to think about the implications of saying something like that. I’ve read estimates of up to 90 percent of the US population passing away during hypothetical SHTF scenarios. 90 percent… that’s not the criminals and bad people in the world, that’s friends and family.
Taking the time plan and investing in the right SHTF gear could save your life or the lives of your loved ones.
If you have everything on this list, you’ll be living comfortably while your neighbors are struggling to survive. If you like them, you’ll be able to help them out, otherwise, you’ll have peace and quiet going forward.
Now, lets cover a good SHTF gear list.
1. SHTF Guns, Knives, and Weapons
Utilize Non-Lethal Options When Possible
Not every situation justifies deadly force. As much as we all want to our moneys worth on our recent AR purchase, we need to be responsible! Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for loading up on boom-sticks and hand cannons, but it’s a good idea to have some non-lethal SHTF weapons as well.
You have to remember, in a SHTF situation ordinarily good people may be forced to act uncharacteristically in order to provide for their family. So, while right now you could never image your neighbor breaking into your home, when SHTF and their family is struggling and hungry you may be surprised by what they’re capable of. I will have an entire section dedicated to SHTF Guns, but here I’ll discuss SHTF weapons that are non-lethal.
1. Standard Pepper Spray
In the less than lethal weapon world pepper spray is pretty much the gold standard. On top of being extremely effective, it’s very affordable. You can pick up a reliable can for under 10 bucks.
If you’re someone that’s intimidated by the idea of carrying a real firearm, or you’re in an area where firearms aren’t permitted, pepper spray is a great alternative.
It’s very effective, I mean, it can be used to incapacitate bears, so you can bet your ass it’s going to stop some punk trying to steal your emergency food rations.
There are my different brands on the market. Range and canister capacity varies greatly from product to product, but to be honest the one I listed here will do.
2. A Dog that Doesn’t Run When the Door Opens
When it comes to personal protection, a Yorkshire Terrier isn’t going to do you much good. They’re all bark and no bite. They love to act tough, but as the door opens they’re suddenly nowhere to be found.
So what kinds of dogs are we talking about…
Usually, the same breeds that the military and police use. If trained properly, dogs can be one of the best and most practical home defense tools. In fact, homes with dogs are far less likely to be broken into. In surveys conducted on deterrents to crime, many burglars admit that dogs and security cameras major determinants to crime; they say they these houses with dogs or cameras are more difficult to break into and are more likely to draw attention. Here are some breeds that are known to take down bad guys.
- German Shepherd
- Doberman Pinscher
- Rottweiler
- Great Dane
- Huskies
- Belgian Malinois
- BULLDOGS!!!
- And many more (I can’t list them all here), but you get the idea. Big dogs with teeth!
Oh and don’t worry, if trained properly they’re totally safe to have around kids.
3. Non-lethal Self Defense Gun
These function much like a paintball gun, in fact, the gun most commonly marketed for this purpose is just an overpriced Tippmann brand paintball gun. It has better range than standard pepper spray and is more effective, but for indoor use, a standard can of pepper spray will do the trick.
4. Stun Gun
A lot of my Marine buddies were posting videos on Facebook this week of taser guns in action. Now you won’t be able to find a military strength one on Amazon, but the one I listed here definitely packs a punch and will put even the largest guys on their ass in a hurry. The major downside of tasers is you have to make contact with the skin, so you either have to hit an area of the body that isn’t covered with clothing or buy one that has sharp and pointy electrodes that can penetrate through clothing.
I’ve never personally been tased, but after watching videos and reading advice from self defense experts I assure you a taser is a very inexpensive and effective means of self defense. I recommend researching, reading reviews, and watching some YouTube videos of them in action. I think you’ll be impressed.
With most tasers, you have to literally be an arms distance away to be able to use them, but there are also ranged tasers you can buy. They’re a little pricey, but I’ll link one below that has some pretty good reviews.
2. SHTF Rifles, Pistols, and Knives
Recommended Knives
1. KA-BAR
If you don’t already own a KA-BAR, do yourself a favor and pick one up. They’re a great knife and you’ll own an important part of history. I wrote an entire article on combat knives about a week ago where I explained how the KA-BAR got its name. It’s a pretty badass story, and if you want to read my full review on combat knives you can find it here. Basically the name is a play on the words “Kill-A-Bear,” which comes from a story of a man taking down a bear with one after his rifle jammed.
During World War 2, Marines and US troops needed a weapon that could match the effectiveness of German close quarter weapons, and the KA-BAR did just that. Along with being a great self defense weapon, the KA-Bar is also a great utility knife for survival situations.
SHTF Rifles
Note: If you plan on using a firearm for defense, make sure you have a reasonable supply on ammo. You might have the nicest arsenal of weaponry, but without ammo, any SHTF gun is just about worthless.
Chances are if shit really hits the fan you won’t be able to get a hold of any more ammo, so even if your wife complains a lot, just keep stockpiling.
Henry U.S. AR 7 .22 Survival Rifle
If you’ve never heard of Henry AR 7 survival rifle it’s pretty cool. One fun fact about it is that it was designed by the same guy who designed the AR-15.
It’s a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle that can be disassembled and the entire rifle fits into entire rifle fits into the stock of the rifle. It’s a perfect little survival rifle for backpacking and is perfect for taking out small game. Another great feature is that when the rifle is disassembled and placed into the stock it is water tight and floats.
I wouldn’t recommend this as a primary SHTF rifle, but it’s still an awesome little rifle that I figured some of you might like to know about. It’s inexpensive and .22 ammo is cheap! It’s also a great rifle to throw in your pack during long hikes or to keep in the safe as a backup SHTF rifle. Just keep in mind this is a survival rifle. I wouldn’t recommend busting this bad boy out for too much target practice.
Here is a good video that shows this little rifle in action! If you are looking to pick one up or want more information about it, you can check out the Henry Repeating Arms website here.
AR-15 (Recommended)
Ok that’s pretty generic, there are so many different types of AR-15, and the market is flooded with cheap ARs, so which model do I recommend? The Colt 6920 is probably the cheapest AR-15 that I would be caught dead with. There are better models, but this is a great starting point for anyone looking for an entry level AR 15.
- Colt LE9620 AR-15 (Best Value)
- Colt AR-15A4
- Sig Sauer M400 SRP
Remington 700
Now if you’re only planning on buying one rifle, I wouldn’t buy a bolt action rifle like the Remington 700, but I think most of you are just looking to beef up your arsenal. The Remington 700 is a perfect addition. If it’s good enough for Marine Snipers it should do the trick in a SHTF situation. The Marines actually use a variant of an M40, which is just a modified Remington 700.
AK-47 (“The most reliable gun that still sucks”)
Now I personally wouldn’t buy an AK, and they’re often called the most reliable gun that still sucks. They’re not very accurate, but if you want a gun that you can count on going BOOM in just about any type of condition they aren’t a bad option.
Shotgun (Best for Close Quarters)
SCAR (Best Overall If Your Budget Allows)
SHTF Pistols
If Shit hits the fan and you’re using a pistol, you’ve made a big mistake! When SHTF you are going to want a rifle!
3. Emergency Food Supply (Secret Bulk Food Option)
Below, I’ll show you a way to get bulk food you probably haven’t heard of.
Most people have enough food on hand to make it for maybe… a week tops. They have no form of emergency rations. If shit hits the fan getting to the store for a long period might not be possible.
Even if you could, those store shelves might not be getting restocked. I mean, if the semi-trucks and transport vehicles can’t get the supplies to stores… you can imagine how things would quickly get crazy.
In the United States, we have already seen this happen many times when hurricanes or other natural disasters hit. You see people looting stores and burglarizing their neighbors to make ends meet.
Ask Yourself: How much food will I need for me and my family?
The American Red Cross recommends having at least a 3 day food supply ready, but preferably a 2 week supply. In my opinion that is the bare minimums, and how much you should have really just depends on what you feel comfortable with. Along with food, it’s a good idea to have some multivitamins handy.
What is the best type of food supply and storage method for me?
I actually wrote an entire comprehensive review on how to choose the best emergency food supply for you here.
Bottom Line:
Most people just don’t think ahead, and they pay the price down the road. It doesn’t cost much and it’s a good idea to have at least a few months of food supply. Keep reading to learn your options.
4. Mormon Food Canning Center (Hidden Gem for Cheap Bulk Food)
Although I am not a Mormon, I know they believe everyone is responsible for having at least a 1 year food supply so they can remain self-sufficient in-case of emergency.
So why am I telling you this? Well, you can take advantage of this. What my family does is hook up with a local Mormon food storage facility that allows us to go in and can all types of foods, such as various types of wheat, beans, fruit, etc. This is one option you could explore. You can also just go there and purchase the food by the can or case.
You can check out the food storage section of their website here they have 101 locations in the United States, so you should be able to find a facility near you.
5. Freeze Dried Food
Buying freeze dried food is a great way to enhance your emergency food supply, and it stays good for up to 30 years! There are a lot of options when it comes to food storage so make sure you take a look at my full review on your long term food storage options. You can buy or read reviews on my favorite freeze dried meals here.
Freeze drying is an old technique that allows food to retain its nutritional value and taste over extended periods of time.
Keep reading to find out how freeze drying works and two good companies you can buy from.
How it Works:
Freeze drying is a three-step process. First food is frozen, then placed in a low heated vacuum chamber, causing frozen water crystals to evaporate directly from ice to vapor in a process called sublimation.
Next, the food goes under a “second drying” where any residual water molecules are removed at increased temperatures.
The food is then sealed with nitrogen for storage to prevent any water or oxygen from getting inside, thus preventing the food from spoiling.
Where to Buy Freeze Dried Food:
Option #1: There are a couple of products I recommend, the first is the Mountain House Just in Case Bucket.
The company has a 30 year taste guarantee… One case provides 12 meals, which is a 3.5-day supply for a single person.
There are many different great meal combinations, and they’re very affordable. Click here to read reviews and more about the Just in Case Bucket.
All you need to do is add water to each individual packet, and you can eat right out of the packet so there is no mess.
You can buy or read reviews on Mountain House freeze dried meals here.
Option #2: If you’re looking to buy a bulk long term food supply (3 month supply), the Valley Food Storage company offers a good section offers healthy freeze dried survival food for emergencies.
Each box provides a 3 month supply for one individual. The company ensures quality by not using harmful ingredients like monosodium glutamate (MSG), hydrogenated oils, or GMOS.
The packets are lightweight, making them easy to transport and store. The bags are resealable, so you can rest assured your food will stay fresh even after opening.
You can buy or read reviews on Valley Food Storage freeze dried food here.
6. Meals Ready to Eat (MREs)
A MRE is an individually packed dehydrated meal that lasts a very long time (typically 5 years or more depending on how they’re stored).
They’re very nutrient/calorie dense and are designed to provide the body with essential nutrition when traditional food supplies are not available. They usually consist of a main meal along with several accessories, such as muffins, cookies, fruit, etc.
If you want a very in-depth review of MREs check out my everything you need to know about MREs page here.
Where to Buy MREs:
There are many types of MREs. I don’t sell any on this site, but I have listed some good Meal Ready to Eat suppliers below. To see what is in each menu item, check out my everything you need to know about MREs page (link above).
To buy MRE menu items 1-12 check out this supplier.
To buy MRE menu items 13-24 check out his supplier.
They usually have competitive prices and reasonable shipping. And most importantly, you can rest assured they were stored correctly and are fresh.
7. Water Supply and Water Filters
How long you can survive without water depends on where you live and other factors. Under ideal conditions, people are recorded living up to 10 days without water. You can read the full review on my favorite water filters here.
Exposure to heat and activity increases the about of water that leaves the body, thus increasing the amount you’ll need to take in.
Under extreme conditions, an adult can lose up to 1.5 liters of water through sweat in an hour.
There a many ways to ensure you’ll have enough clean water.
Using the products below, in conjunction with bottled water will ensure you’ll have a sustainable water supply.
Bottom Line:
Ensuring you have clean water and the ability to filter and/or sterilize water is very important. Purchasing a water filter and/or water purification tablets will increase your chance of survival in an emergency situation. To find the best products in each category, keep reading.
8. Water Purification Tablets
The active ingredient in water purification tablets is usually iodine, chlorine, or chlorine dioxide. These chemicals deactivate viruses, bacteria, and parasites that might be living in the water.
Drinking untreated water from rivers, lakes, wells, cisterns, or collected rain can make you sick, and can even be life threatening.
Water purification tabs are used by all major aid agencies, NATO, and other military organizations to purify water in emergency situations.
I recommend purchasing Aquatabs Water Purification Tablets. They have been around for over 20 years and have treated over 3 billion gallons of water.
The fast-acting tabs make water ready to drink in 30 minutes. These tablets don’t make the water taste bad like many other products out there. Aquatabs have been used during hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and floods.
Warning: Taking iodine tables may be contraindicated for anyone with thyroid conditions, iodine allergies, or women who are pregnant. Water purification tabs are not 100 percent effective and may lose effectiveness over long periods of time.
9. Water Distiller
After a natural disaster, many contaminants such as lead, salt, heavy metals, radiation, and/or other contaminants can taint previously safe drinking water supplies.
Distilling water involves boiling water and capturing/collecting the steam, leaving the dangerous contaminants behind. There are many ways to make a water distillation system at home, but it’s much easier to just buy one.
You can read more about the nonelectric water distiller I recommend here.
The Waterwise non-electric distiller can distillate 3.2 quarts of water in 1.2 hours, which is equal to about 16 gallons in a day.
This product is great for camping or adding to your emergency supplies. Another plus is that it comes with a 2 year warranty.
#3 Survival Straws
How survival straws work:
Survival straws are an easy way to filter water. The active carbon filter element found inside the survival straw filters out large pathogens and bacteria that might be living in the water. Another plus is they also remove bad odors and flavor from the water.
Lifestraw’s personal water filters are award winning and have been used around the world by millions of people since 2005. They remove 99.9999 percent of bacteria and protozoan parasites, which far exceeds EPA standards for water filters. Each Straw filters up to 1000 liters of water without iodine, chlorine, or other chemicals. Each straw comes in a sealed bag, making them perfect to put in a backpack or storing for emergencies. Survival straws are a great addition to your bug out bag and SHTF gear supply.
You can read reviews on the top rated survival straw by LifeStraw here.
#4 Boiling water
Boiling water kills parasites, bacteria, and other pathogens. Although boiling water does not remove heavy metals and other contaminants, it is still one of the best methods to make water safe to drink.
I recommend letting the water boil for 5-10 minutes to ensure your water will be safe to drink.
As long as you have a metal pot and a butane burner, you’ll be able to safely boil a lot of water.
I recommend this portable butane stove burner.
Or if you already have a propane tank for your grill, this propane gas cooker is a good buy.
10. Clothing and Rain Gear
Many times during a SHTF situation there will be rioting and looting on a mass level.
You may want to relocate in some cases. For this reason ensure you have good hiking boots/shoes, rain gear, and clothing for hiking long distances. During winter months the leading cause of death is likely to be freezing to death.
If you find yourself in a situation where it’s raining or storming you’re definitely going to want a survival style rain poncho like the one here.
When it comes to a type of clothing that will keep you warm I recommend buying some wool clothes. Heat leaves the body through the head very quickly, so make sure you have some quality hats. I was issued a sweater like this Rothco wool commando sweater here when I was in the Marines and I loved it.
You’re going to need a good pack to carry all this clothing and gear, which leads me to the next section.
11. Get Home and Bug Out Bag
If you have to get away, or bug out, having a good bag is essential. A bug out bag is essentially a portable kit that has all the items you would most likely need to survive away from your home. You would only use this bag in an absolute worst case scenario. I also wrote an entire page on get home bags, which basically bags designed to help get you home during an emergency. These bags are best left in the trunk of your car.
You can either buy a quality bag and pack it yourself or buy one that comes filled with items you’ll most likely need to survive for 72 hours. I’ll link to two I would recommend below.
In your bug out bag, you might want to add some things that are often taken for granted and overlooked like personal hygiene gear, toilet paper, supplies to brush your teeth, etc.
You can pick up a good military style bug out bag (3 day assault pack) here.
12. Shelter
A survival tent is a must have item on an emergency supplies list. In some cases, your home may be destroyed, or you’ll have to relocate for a period of time. Having a survival tent will protect you from rain, wind, and sun.
Recommended Product:
I recommend buying the Survival Shack here.
It is made from a mylar thermal material designed by NASA to reflect up to 90 percent of body heat to keep you warm.
It is lightweight, compact, and easy to carry. It’s good for hiking, boating, hunting, backpacking, or just a good addition to your emergency gear list.
It sets up in minutes and comfortably accommodates two adults.
Flashlights and Headlamps
You can check out my full review on the best hand crank emergency flashlights here.
Anyone who has ever lost power quickly realizes how dependent we have become on electricity. Not being able to flip on the lights is very limiting.
Having a dependable flashlight that will keep working in adverse conditions is very important. Along with battery powered emergency flashlights, it’s also a good idea to have a solar powered and/or hand crank flashlight.
Having a headlamp flashlight is very nice so you can work hands free. You don’t need anything super expensive or fancy. The headlamp I recommend here is cheap and will do the job just fine.
A hand crank flashlight is nice because obviously, it doesn’t rely on batteries. One good hand crank flashlight can be found here. It also can be used as a mobile cell phone charger and radio.
One cool product to add to your house is a product developed by the Red Cross called the blackout buddy. When the power goes out the blackout buddy automatically turns on. If you lose power the blackout buddy will allow you to find other hand held flashlights and other things you might need.
13. Other SHTF Items
Another important thing I want to remind you of is not to tell others about your plans or what supplies you have. Instead of telling them exactly what you have, it’s a good idea to inform them of how they should prepare so they aren’t coming to you for help. While it’s great to help others, when shit hits the fan your family should always be priority number one.
The below items are not necessarily must have survival gear, but are definitely things you should consider adding to your emergency supplies list.
- 550 Cord
- Backpacks
- Batteries
- Battery Powered Fan
- Duct Tape
- Emergency Radio
- Epirb
- Fire Starting Materials
- Firearms
- Compass
- First Aid Kit
- Fix a flat
- Flashlights and Headlamps
- GPS (Global positioning system)
- Hand Sanitizer
- Hang crank battery charger
- Hats
- Heavy Duty Trash Bags
- Hygiene Products
- Hand/foot warmers
- Insect Repellant

Final Thoughts
You don’t have much control over when and if a SHTF situation takes place. You do, however, have control over if you’re prepared and how you react to these situations. Having the best SHTF plan possible and investing in emergency essentials will save you time down the road… and possibly your life.
I Need Your Help!
If there is anything you think should be added or changed on this list or have something you think I should add to this SHTF gear list, leave a comment below and let me know. I know a lot of you are experts when It comes to survival and emergency gear. Even if you’re not, I always like to hear other perspectives! Be sure to check out the other sections of my site before you go.
Remember…. The time to Prepare is Now!
