13 Foods that Fight Pain
90 Comments Posted by docakilah on December 8, 2011

While many foods taste great, they are also powerful healers in a vibrant multicolor disguise. The best healing remedies also taste fabulous (I can’t say that about any prescription medications). Plus, foods won’t cause the nasty common side effects that most drugs cause.
1. Cherries
Muraleedharan Nair, PhD, professor of natural products and chemistry at Michigan State University, found that tart cherry extract is ten times more effective than aspirin at relieving inflammation. Only two tablespoons of the concentrated juice need to be taken daily for effective results. Sweet cherries have also been found to be effective.
2. Blackberries 3. Raspberries 4. Blueberries and 5. Strawberries
Dr. Nair later found the same anti-pain compound in berries like blackberries, raspberries, blueberries and strawberries
6. Celery and Celery Seeds
James Duke, Ph.D., author of The Green Pharmacy, found more than 20 anti-inflammatory compounds in celery and celery seeds, including a substance called apigenin, which is powerful in its anti-inflammatory action. Add celery seeds to soups, stews or as a salt substitute in many recipes.
7. Ginger
Ginger reduces pain-causing prostaglandin levels in the body and has been widely used in India to treat pain and inflammation. A study by Indian researchers found that when people who were suffering from muscular pain were given ginger, they all experienced improvement. The recommended dosage of ginger is between 500 and 1,000 milligrams per day. If you’re taking medications, check with your health practitioner for possible herb-drug interactions.
8. Turmeric
Turmeric (curcuma longa) is the yellow spice commonly used in Indian curries. In research it has been shown to be a more effective anti-inflammatory than steroid medications when dealing with acute inflammation. Its main therapeutic ingredient is curcumin. Research shows that curcumin suppresses pain through a similar mechanism as drugs like COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitors (without the harmful side effects). Choose a standardized extract with 1500 mg of curcumin content per day.
9. Salmon 10. Mackerel and 11. Herring
Many fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and herring also contain these valuable oils. Omega-3s convert in the body into hormone-like substances that decrease inflammation and pain. According to Dr. Alfred D. Steinberg, an arthritis expert at the National Institute of Health, fish oil is an anti-inflammatory agent. Fish oil acts directly on the immune system by suppressing 40 to 55 percent of the release of cytokines, compounds known to destroy joints. Many other studies also demonstrate that eating moderate amounts of fish or taking fish oil reduces pain and inflammation, particularly for arthritis sufferers.
12. Flax Seeds and Flax Oil
Freshly-ground flax seeds and cold-pressed flax oil, contain plentiful amounts of fatty acids known as Omega-3s. Do not cook with flax oil otherwise it will have the opposite effect-irritating the body’s tissues and causing pain.
13. Raw Walnuts and Walnut Oil
Raw walnuts and walnut oil also contain the same powerful Omega-3 fatty acids that fight pain and inflammation in the body.
When it comes to pain, food really is the best medicine.

Beneficial Insects for Your Garden

Beneficial Insects for Your Garden
Beneficial insects for your garden can be your best allies when fighting harmful insects that can damage your growing thriving fruits and vegetables. The best way to protect beneficial insects is to avoid using toxic sprays or dusts in the garden. Gardeners may try to use even organically sprays sparingly to save garden crops that are being attacked because a gardener may end up killing beneficial insects by mistake. It is a fine balance of trying to decide if beneficial insects can defend the fruits and vegetables growing or if an organic spray is the best option.

A weed killing recipe is different than what you would spray on your garden plants.

How To Make Glass Bottle Garden Fence
This step by step tutorial of reusing and re purposing glass bottles to make a color garden fence or piece of garden artwork is inspiring. I do have a suggestion to add to the project that I learned from previously working with glass that stays outdoors and encounters windy conditions: Buy rubber gasket discs from your local hardware store (20 cents a piece) to place on each side of the glass bottles as buffer which allows it to flex without breaking.

Art or Shooting Practice?
Is it art or shooting practice?
In my years of totem making, I've collected glassware that didn't make the cut. What should I do with them? They're still beautiful in their own right. But, they don't fit the criteria for totem-ness. After three years of crafting the crazy garden jewels, I've finally identified what works and what doesn't.

Alas! I saw this fabulous photo on the internet and my inspiration took shape. I began planning the materials. Thankfully, my husband finds some satisfaction in creating something beautiful, so he was in charge of the frame. I began choosing the candidates.

Beautiful, aren't they? The next step was determining their placement. I did this by lining them up on the table and playing with the order of colors and shapes. This became my initial plan (below).

Through the process, several bottles broke, so I did some rearranging of the layout later as I went. We had to drill holes in the bottoms of all the bottles so I first tried drilling them with a hand drill and "diamond bit." However, it took FOREVER to drill one bottle and it was a tense process-- not to mention, highly volatile.
The crappy photo below shows one bottle propped in the drain of the kitchen sink. I was drilling and my daughter was spraying with water. It's imperative that you drill with a water bath because of the heat it generates.

Enough of that! We graduated to a drill press we borrowed from a friend. It took us a while to find a good drill bit that wouldn't break after 5 or 6 bottles. The winner was a diamond CORE drill bit. Once we found these, the process went fairly smooth. That's me squirting a water bottle while my hubby did the delicate work. He was compliant and wore safety glasses. He's smart.

Once the bottles were drilled, it didn't take long. Mark has already built the frame from copper pipe and drilled holes in the top and bottom pipe. We strung the bottle with clothesline cable (it's a plastic coated cable) and spaced each bottle by inserting 3/8" clear plastic tubing between each one. We strung the cable into the pipe's holes and secured them with cable clamps at the top and bottom.

The finished product exceeded my expectations a hundred times. It's absolutely beautiful during every part of the day.

It's even beautiful on an overcast day (photo below).

My only fear is that someone may mistake it for shooting practice. :-O

How to Plant and Grow Potatoes
Learning how to plant and grow potatoes because the taste and texture of home grown potatoes are far superior to store bought ones plus you will save money growing from your own backyard garden. As a homesteading gardener, you can grow varieties that you hardly ever find in grocery stores.
Beans, cabbage, corn, and horseradish will enhance potatoes to grow more rapidly and greatly improve the flavor of your potatoes when grown together. Plant nasturtium around potato plants to repel Colorado potato beetle which can damage your potato crop. It is best to avoid planting potatoes near tomatoes, sunflowers, raspberries, pumpkins, squash or cucumbers because these plants seem to weaken the potato plant making them more susceptible to blight.

How To And Why You Need To Make A Solowheel Pack
Jump To:
Concerned about the bugout bag weighing you down too much? This should be a concern.
Americans are sedentary creatures, and we spend a lot of time behind desks and on keyboards. That said, it’s important that we consider our true capabilities in a situation where we need to get out of dodge!
We have a very interesting build here called the Solowheel, and this could be just the answer you are looking for.
It might be just what you need to handle your pack, or it could provide you with the leverage you need to carry even more when the time comes.
What is a Solowheel?
The solowheel is essentially a pack-carrying system or a gear-carrying system that is designed to be pulled with a single wheel.
It is comprised of a small shelf that tapers down to a single wheel. This design uses a pretty big wheel, but I would imagine you could even put something like a wheelbarrow wheel on the solowheel.
This system can hold a pack and two other items, or maybe smaller packs.
Creating the Solowheel
To do this properly, you are going to need a mold for the frame and have some experience with veneer.
If you are in the dark about those things, simply check out the build on its original page. There is no doubt that the solowheel can lighten your load.
With a small shop, you could create your own custom solowheel and outfit it just the way you like. If nothing else, it would be a great solution for children who get tired of carrying their bags on a hike or bugout.
We all have physical limits and stress around the topic of bugging out. It’s a big deal, so we need to take every advantage.
