By Emma James • American Staff Writer • August 25, 2008

LAUREL — A pastor of a Laurel church has reported that several of his members have been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

The Rev. Nilpon Garcia, pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Laurel, said he had family members of eight Hispanic workers at Howard Industries call him this morning upset about the raid.

Garcia, who was at the scene at the Laurel plant, said these members were employees but was not sure what their duties were.

Howard raid was result of union tip

By EMMA JAMES • American Staff Writer • August 25, 2008

No arrests totals are available yet in the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid of Howard Industries’ Laurel plant.

Barbara Gonzalez, spokeswoman for ICE, said the raid was executed because of a tip from a Howard Industries union member.

Employees are being interviewed, and if they are found in violation of U.S. immigration laws, they will be moved to a facility for processing, Gonzalez said.

No one is being let in. One car has left the Howard building since reporters have been on the scene.

Two men wearing camouflage near a car inside the gate at Howard Industries are guarding it. The camouflage uniforms bear the ICE letters, indicating that the guards are with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

No one will make any comments at the Ellisville location, either from the company or ICE.

ICE Raids Plant for Illegal Workers

    Posted: Aug 25, 2008 10:54 AM

    Updated: Aug 25, 2008 11:06 AM

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Federal immigration agents raided a major manufacturing plant in south Mississippi on Monday, but it wasn't immediately clear how many illegal workers were taken into custody.

Barbara Gonzalez, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman, said the target of the operation was Howard Industries Inc. in Laurel, a town of about 18,000 people located about 85 miles southeast of Jackson.

Howard Industries produces dozens of products, ranging from electrical transformers to medical supplies, according to the company's Web site.

"This is a targeted enforcement operation that is part of an ongoing ICE investigation that has revealed that illegal aliens are employed at Howard Industries," Gonzalez said from the scene.

"Because the operation is still under way, an arrest total is not available at this time."

A recording at Howard Industries on Monday said the telephone switchboard was closed. A man who answered a phone call from The Associated Press at the company's security station said "no" and hung up when asked if there was anyone available to discuss what had happened.

Gonzalez said public health service officers were on the scene to interview and evaluate the condition of the workers to determine if there are "any humanitarian concerns we need to be aware of."

"Humanitarian concerns will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine if an alternative to detention is warranted," she said.

Gonzalez declined to tell AP how may agents were involved in the operation, saying "that's law enforcement sensitive information.

ICE says people whose relatives were detained can call for information: 866-341-3858.

I.C.E. finally enforces our immigratin laws at Howard Ind. in Laurel, MS Not sure really of the exact numbers working at Howard's but it is well over a thousand for sure. All I can say is it is about time!!!!!!! Here's a few pics and a video I made after they swooped in this morning. Somebody's in trouble, LOL. Couldn't have come at a better time as the Company was about to break it off in us. We are currently renegotiating our contract with the company and with all the non-union illegal aliens that WERE working here we didn't have much of a foot to stand on. WE DO NOW!!!!
