Poll: Ron Paul Strongest Against Obama In Head To Head Matchup

Also named most truthful GOP candidate in separate study

GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul is leading the incumbent president in a hypothetical matchup, according to a newly released poll from respected pollster Rasmussen.
Paul scores 43% over 41% for Obama in the poll, with 10% saying they would vote for some other option, a figure that includes 17% of Republicans.
Paul also picks up 15% of the vote from self-identified liberals, according to Rasmussen.
Mitt Romney is the only other candidate to lead Obama in the poll, scoring 45% to Obama’s 43%. Paul polls the strongest, however, given that he drives the president’s numbers down further than Romney.
A hypothetical Paul nomination also drives the undecided voters up significantly.
Senator Rick Santorum trails the president nationally by two percentage points, 45% to 43%. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich trails even further behind when pitted against Obama, with a ten point deficit, 49% to 39%.
Paul has regularly emerged as the strongest contender in other polls when matched head to head with Obama. This is the first time, however, that he has done so in a Rasmussen poll.

The poll shows a significant drop in approval ratings for Obama, who has seen a recent bounce in the polls throughout the first two months of the year.
Forty-two percent (42%) now Strongly Disapprove of the way that Obama is performing as president. His overall approval rating is down six points since mid February, according to Rasmussen.
In a separate study by The Houston Chronicle, Ron Paul was named the most truthful of the GOP contenders.
Ron Paul “had 58 percent accuracy from 33 statements that were evaluated on their honesty and truth.” The Chronicle’s ‘Texas on the Potomac’ blog explained. “Paul’s true and mostly true categories were the most plentiful, tied with seven statements in each.” the report continued.
The Chronicle used fact checking site PolitiFact to analyze statements from each of the candidates and assign accuracy values.
Ron Paul was also found to have had the lowest percentage of ‘half truths’, according to the study, with 18 percent. Newt Gingrich was found to be the most untruthful candidate, with just 42 accuracy points.
Over the weekend, Paul delivered a rousing keynote speech to hundreds of supporters in Michigan. Watch the speech in full below:

Romney can’t draw a crowd: Just 1,250 turn out to hear him speak in stadium with 60,000 capacity

Mitt Romney has had a few awkward moments throughout the primary season. But few could match his speech to the Detroit Economic Club at Ford Field yesterday.
The 65,000-seat home of the National Football League's Detroit Lions seemed like an odd choice of venue for an appearance in front of a crowd of just 1,250 people.
Mr Romney spoke from a podium on the 30-yard line of the football field in Detroit, Michigan, as the crowd, mostly men in suits, sat in chairs set up on the artificial turf.

Not quite a full house: Members of the Detroit Economic club gather to hear a speech by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney at Ford Field yesterday

The presidential hopeful has been turning his campaign message back to the economy as he tries to fend off rival Rick Santorum in crucial Michigan and Arizona primaries next week.

Mr Romney vowed to bring fundamental change to rebuild the U.S. economy with fiscally conservative policies, a message he hopes will help him make a comeback in the hard-hit state, where Mr Santorum is threatening to score an upset.

But the economic address became a lightning rod for Mr Romney's odd ad libs.

In an attempt to counter his critics, Mr Romney emphasised his Michigan roots and love for the cars produced by the state's auto industry.

The former private equity executive has taken some criticism in the state because he opposed an $81billion federal bailout credited with helping save the auto industry.

He pointed out that he drives a Ford Mustang and Chevrolet pickup truck, and that his wife, Ann 'drives two Cadillacs, actually' - a comment analysts said could alienate some blue-collar voters by reminding them of Mr Romney's vast wealth.

Closing his speech, he said of Michigan: 'You know, the trees are the right height, the streets are just right.'

The remark was met by puzzled murmurs in the otherwise silent stadium, the New York Daily News reported.

Message: Mr Romney focused his speech on his economic plan, outlining fiscally conservative policies he hoped would win him support in the economically hard-hit state

Quiet: The occasion saw a few more of Mr Romney's odd ad libs, which were met with bemused murmurs from the crowd

Mr Romney spent most of his speech yesterday discussing his economic plan, saying a 20 per cent cut in personal income tax rates would help the economy grow and create jobs.

He also called for reforms to Medicare, the federal health programme for the elderly, which would raise the age at which citizens become eligible for the benefit.

During his speech, Mr Romney declared himself the Republican presidential candidate with 'the only chance' to defeat President Barack Obama.

Mr Obama has been most vulnerable on the economy as the general election approaches in November, but signs are growing that the recovery from the Great Recession is picking up speed.

Mr Santorum has switched the campaign narrative recently to focus on social issues, and he has risen in the polls to a near tie for the Republican lead after his surprise victories in three states on the same day earlier this month.

Mr Romney's campaign rests on a foundation of economic know-how, and the multimillionaire former venture capitalist continues to present himself as a lifelong businessman with the skills to end to the worst recession in decades.

The economy is a safer issue for Mr Romney, as he still faces scepticism from more conservative Republicans over his shifting positions on sensitive social issues such as abortion.

Laid back affair: Members of the press sit on the goal line at Ford Field as they prepare for Mr Romney's speech

Family values: Mr Romney gives a hug to his sister, Lynn Keenan, after his address

Mr Romney and the Republican establishment that largely supports him are counting on the idea that he is the candidate with the best chance of beating Obama to get him the nomination at the party's convention in August.

He remains the front-runner in terms of delegates to the convention and in campaign fundraising, though finance reports released this week show the momentum from Romney donors slowed in January.

Backed by ads attacking Santorum from his own campaign and from Restore Our Future, an outside group that supports him, Mr Romney has made gains in the past week in Michigan.

But numerous polls show that Republicans who say they support one of the candidates could change their mind.

Ron Paul Endorsed by Prominent Pro-Life Leader from North Dakota

Paul Maloney says Paul “has been on the front lines of the pro-life fight not only in Congress but as an obstetrician who has delivered over 4,000 babies”

BISMARCK, North Dakota – 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul was endorsed today by Paul Maloney, one of North Dakota’s most prominent pro-life leaders.

Mr. Maloney serves as Executive Director of the North Dakota Right to Life Association. Established in May 1971, North Dakota Right to Life is the largest and oldest pro-life organization in North Dakota. In making his endorsement, Mr. Maloney stated he was doing so as a private citizen and not on behalf of any prolife organization.

“I endorse Ron Paul, because he has been on the front lines of the pro-life fight not only in Congress but as an obstetrician who has delivered over 4,000 babies. Ron Paul knows that our individual rights stem from the value we have for all human life, especially innocent human life, and that a disregard for human life will not expand human freedom,” said Mr. Maloney of Mandan.

News of the endorsement was well received from the Paul campaign’s North Dakota operation.

“Congressman Ron Paul is a man of faith who understands that our rights come from our Creator and that the right to life stands above all other rights. Dr. Paul delivered more than 4,000 babies during his distinguished medical career as an OB/GYN. The experience of bringing new babies into the world profoundly affirmed his view on the sanctity of all human life. By conviction and by science, Dr. Paul understands that we should foster a society with a far greater respect for life,” said Jared Hendrix, North Dakota State Director for the Ron Paul 2012 Presidential campaign.

North Dakota is ranked the seventh most prolife state in America according to Americans United for Life’s latest-available annual scoring.
