Senate Remains Up in the Air on Immigration

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist kept colleagues guessing Tuesday about whether he would set aside his own immigration proposal in favor of bipartisan legislation approved Monday by the Judiciary Committee that would allow millions of illegal immigrants to earn citizenship.

Frist, R-Tenn., has been largely silent on his intentions. He has scheduled a 2:15 p.m. cloture vote to limit debate on a motion to proceed to his own bill (S 2454), which is targeted solely on border security and tougher enforcement of immigration laws.

Aides said Frist intended to bring up the issue Tuesday at the weekly GOP caucus lunch. Only then will he decide whether to replace his measure with the Judiciary Committee’s version, which contains important portions of bipartisan legislation (S 1033) sponsored by John McCain, R-Ariz., and Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass.

A big question for Frist is whether he wants to allow the draft bill to be considered even though it was opposed by a majority of Republicans on the committee.

Four Republicans joined all eight panel Democrats in supporting the draft bill, which would allow the estimated 11 million to 12 million illegal immigrants in the country to stay and earn citizenship after 11 years. Six Republicans opposed it.

The bill is vastly different from legislation (HR 4437) the House passed in December, which focused squarely on enforcement and border security. Frist had hoped to go in that direction, but he may not have the 60 votes needed to get cloture on his bill.

Supporters of the committee bill say that blocking the debate would set a bad precedent.

I would like to say that the bill on immigration reform that Senator Spector has introduced is a sick joke. Please ask Senator ________ to tell Senator Spector to come back with a bill that is for enforcement only so that the voting can begin soon and we can get our Borders secured.

The American people are not going to accept an amnesty, or a guestworker program disguiding a shamnesty. The overwhelming majority of the grassroots DO NOT want a guestworker program for the people who are already here illegally. If we get our borders secured and get the companies that have hired illegals prosecuted, and get every one of the illegals out of here and Americans are back at work with their unions restored,the way they were before this administration Purposely let all the illegals in to help Bush's business buddy's bust the unions, THEN and ONLY Then will we accept talk of a guestworker program.

If you follow President Bush’s lead and cram a guestworker program down our throats anyway, let me tell you what the plan of the Republican grassroots is.

We will be voting against EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN this election season.(except for Tancredo and any one he endorses). Why? Do we want a Democratic government? Of course not. Both major parties are riddled with so much corruption that we need to blow them both out of the water! The only way we can do that is by supporting the third party candidates. The Constitution Party is a little far right for my tastes but I'd rather give some of them a chance than a Democrat. There appear to be lots of Independents who are interested in working for the American people, too. I think we should consider everyone's merits before we give the government to the Democrats. After all, Clinton gave us NAFTA and sold us out to China.

From what I can see, Democrats and Republicans are all globalists, they just grab from different angles at the gold ring trying to make us think they are different. One is just as crooked as the other and to give either one power is folly!

Well, everyone has their own decision to make here and I certainly agree we cannot give the government to the Democrats. Im the last one who wants to see the witch in the presidency. But since this is a midterm election, I think we have some room to 1)Chastise well the Republicans and teach them a lesson they will not soon forget 2) Get a decent Republican candidate elected in 2008 - a much better candidate that we will get if the present Republican Party keeps getting its way.


I think it would work because President Bush and Cheney would certainly get their come-uppance. Since Haskert would still be the interim REPUBLICAN president, the Dems could not get alot of their silliness through into law. Then in 2008, the Republicans and many conservative Dems, would be ready for a Republican president and more Republicans in Congress by 2008. A chastened Republican party might be ready to give us the candidate that we want and would certainly remember the upsets of 2006 the next time they think about betraying their grassroots.

Third parties are great, but that would still be voting against the Republicans, wouldn't it? I just believe the Dems will win if Republicans desert the Republican elites. Even if they dont, the effect on the Republicans will be the same if THEY GET PUT OUT OF OFFICE EN MASSE.

I only tell them(the Republican Senators) the Dems, because that is what they will respond to best. I dont think they can picture a third party as a serious threat .

Bottom line is to CHASTISE THE REPUBLICAN PARTY and let them know we are planning it!!
