This gentleman has obviously reached the end. Let's hope and pray his life will turn around and totally change from the desperate state it has apparently been in for a very long time due to his decisions. His family is in need of prayer as well.

    What a story.

Feel sorry for the guys family.

Now we know the story and the story behind the story.

But why would this guy send an email like that?

Mr. William, if Mr. Lowery would've appologized to you about the email, you think you would've let it go?

Thing I wonder bout is the "what-if's" of this whole ordeal.

and if he didn't get fired, he wouldn't have tried to rob a bank for food and stuff.

I do think the person has some real issues... but now, he's really at the point of no return and he'll likely get out of jail and work menial jobs for the rest of his life b/c no decent company will hire him.

DeputyWP, I do think this man was starting to crack when he sent ALIPAC/William this email. I also have to believe he was not simply fired over this email, but most likely a string of events stemming from his failing mental state. Likely he had stepped on one too many toes long before he emailed William.

I do feel bad for his family, they will suffer more for this than he will.

Though I side with Dixie, that what goes around comes around, and he simply could not deal with the consequences of what he had always been a supporter of, the harsh effects of open borders. It came back to bite him the backend.

I wonder how long it will take for it to get to our elected elites who not only support it, but have pushed aside their fellow citizens and constituents to aid and abet illegal aliens? I can only wait for this with anticipation, as they deserve it more than this man did.

Suspect he did have[quote] some other things he did at work that would lead them to fire him other then this.. and this may of been the last straw..

This guy clearly has poor judgement

The newspaper did not give me the details, but they did hint at this not being the first problem they had with Mr. Lowery.

I would not have held my breath waiting on an apology from him considering the level of animosity he displayed towards us.

Of interesting note, Mr. Lowery told the police he needed money for his kids to eat.

The Editorial printed above mentions that Mr. Lowery is 52 and the father of two ADULT children.

If true, so much for his claim he needed to feed his kids.

The sad thing is, if this guy had been an illegal, he'd probably have gotten away with it!

OK, I'm confused... He needs to feed his grown children?

PhredE, your right. None of us is protected from unemployment in a competitive market. Especially since illegals are filling the fall-back jobs.

Sad to say, harsh reality is the only way a Liberal learns the lessons. Conservatives can tell them all day long and until they experience a life changing event, they refuse to understand.

Why rob a bank? Ex-reporter to police: I'm broke
    By RUSS BYNUM

    Associated Press

    3:31 PM EDT, September 19, 2007

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- A former newspaper reporter charged with trying to rob a bank with a sawed-off shotgun told police during his arrest he needed money because ``I'm broke,'' according to a police report.

Don Lowery, 52, was also ill and in need of a liver transplant, the editorial page editor of the Savannah Morning News said in a column published Wednesday. Lowery left his job at the newspaper in May.

Savannah police say a bank customer tackled Lowery on Monday after he walked into a BankSouth branch with a shotgun, 25 rounds of ammunition and two knives. The customer pinned Lowery until police arrived.

Savannah police Sgt. G. Ernst wrote in his report that he was placing leg shackles on the suspect when Lowery said: ``I'm broke ... I needed the money. My kids ain't got no food.''

Lowery has been hospitalized since his arrest and was in listed in serious condition Wednesday. Police say Harry Gloss, the customer who grabbed Lowery, tackled him as Lowery fumbled with the gun in his belt. The report says Gloss struck Lowery repeatedly to keep him on the ground.

``I was scared for those women working in that bank,'' said Gloss, who would not talk about his actions in detail. ``I thought he was going to hurt those women. I just couldn't let them get hurt.''

Lowery's wife, Sandra, did not immediately return a phone call Wednesday.

Former colleagues at the Savannah Morning News, where Lowery had covered neighboring Effingham County since 1989, knew him as a dogged reporter who fought for public access to government and had little patience for dishonesty.

He could be painfully blunt-spoken, even when it came to his own shortcomings, as was apparent in the online profile Lowery wrote about himself for the newspaper's Web site.

``I've been cussed, beat up, fired, bit, burned, busted for drunk driving (at 10 a.m. on my way to work), cut, threatened,'' Lowery wrote. ``...I've also tried to accurately cover news I felt was important to readers.''

Tom Barton, the newspaper's editorial page editor, said in a column Wednesday that any attempted heist by Lowery would be ``doomed to fail.''

``Don Lowery knows as much about bank robbery as the pope knows about Viagra,'' wrote Barton, who said he's known Lowery since 1978.

Charlie Cochran, a former Morning News editor and reporter, recalled that Lowery and other reporters used to joke that bank robbery was ``the stupidest crime in the world, because it's the one crime guaranteed to get the FBI on your case.''

``He actually is a thoroughly decent human being,'' said Cochran, who left the newspaper last year to become a minister.

``Don, if he had been in his right mind, would not have done what he's allegedly done. I just think he was under a tremendous amount of pressure.''

Savannah Morning News Publisher Julian Miller said the newsroom staff has been collecting cash donations to be sent to Lowery's family.

``We were all disturbed when we heard that Don was involved in this,'' Miller said. ``He had been part of this newspaper and the news community here for a couple of decades. Our hearts go out to his family.''

Four months before his arrest, Lowery left the Morning News after an advocacy group complained to the newspaper that Lowery had sent it an e-mail message filled with insults and profanity.

The North Carolina-based group Americans for Legal Immigration posted a copy of Lowery's e-mail on its web site May 15.

William Gheen, the group's president, said Lowery had used his newspaper e-mail account to reply to a press release the group had sent him urging state and local governments to step up enforcement of immigration laws. Lowery's e-mail began: ``Go (expletive) yourself.''

Gheen said he complained to Susan Catron, the newspaper's executive editor, who later told him Lowery was ``among the ranks of former employees.''

Miller and Catron declined to comment, saying the newspaper does not discuss personnel issues.
