This guy not only lost his job today, but he did so in a way that his downfall by his own hand will be archived here at ALIPAC and widely available on the search engines.

BREAKING NEWS ON SEPT 19, 2007!

I just received a call from an Associated Press writer in Georgia. He wanted to discuss this incident that took place in May with Mr. Don Lowery.

The AP reporter told me that Don Lowery has been charged with attempting to rob a bank in Savannah, GA!

The story should be out later today or tomorrow and we will be able to read the full details then.

Former Morning News reporter's condition downgraded to critical .

A Guyton man who tried unsuccessfully to rob a midtown bank Monday told officers he needed the money for his family.

Don Lowery, 52, a former Savannah Morning News reporter, parked his Buick about noon and left it running behind BankSouth on Stephenson Avenue, according to Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police reports.

Lowery, who had disguised himself, then walked into the bank carrying a single-shot sawed-off shotgun and about 25 shotgun shells, the reports indicate.

They go on to say he wore a tan straw hat, big dark sunglasses, a mask over his face, a white shirt, blue windbreaker pants and black gloves.

After a customer tackled him and held Lowery for officers, he told Sgt. Gregory Ernst he was desperate for money. The officer got that response by asking Lowery, who had apparent injuries, if he was OK.

"Lowery replied, 'I'm broke.' I thought this was in reference to an injury and asked, 'What's broke?' Lowery replied, 'I am. I needed the money. My kids ain't got no food,' " Ernst wrote in a preliminary police report.

Contacted Tuesday, Lowery's wife, Sandra, declined to comment. Lowery left the Morning News three months ago after about 15 years of off-and-on employment with the paper and its affiliates.

The bank customer who tackled Lowery said he was convinced Lowery would harm the tellers if he didn't intervene.

"I didn't think. I just did," Harry Gloss said. "I knew that man was going to hurt those women. I go in that bank every day and they are always so nice to me. I couldn't live with myself if something happened to them."

Aside from Lowery and Gloss, no one was injured in the failed heist. No money was taken, but Lowery faces federal charges.

Gloss initially asked that police not release his identity. On Tuesday, he said he didn't want publicity or praise for his actions.

Reports show the 6-foot-2-inch, 200-pound Gloss tackled Lowery and hit him several times to keep him on the ground, according to the report.

Lowery is being treated at Memorial Health University Medical Center. His condition was downgraded from serious to critical Tuesday, according to hospital spokesman Michael Notrica.

However, he was making a political, albeit vulgar, statement as a reporter as an employee of this firm and we are under no obligation to keep that a secret.

As long as our information is accurate, we can leave this thread up.

I don't understand why he didn't get food from a local church or from welfare. It is a shame that he chose this route. I feel for his family.

I wish Don Lowery would just admit that hate isn't the answer. He needs to be a little more open-minded and tolerant of others.
