    From examining the photo

Well, I can't tell if the photograph is authentic or not but here's what I can tell from examining it. Color artifacts from a Bayer filter are definitely present on the sign and seem to be in the rest of the photograph as well. This indicates that both the sign and the rest of the picture were taken with a single chip camera--not a scanner or a three-chip video camera. The edges of the sign are neither overly sharp nor blurred over. The former would've indicated the signs were matted into the photograph and the latter that they were matted and an attempt was made to conceal it by blurring the edges. There is an interesting red spot just on the left edge of the lower sign near its middle. This looks to me like an internal lens reflection. This would be a masterwork of deception if someone added this after matting in the sign. Having said all that I still can't be sure that the text on the sign was added afterward or is part of the original. Someone could've taken a picture of text under similar lighting conditions and then matted the text onto the signs but it would be really hard to do.

just cuz an area is blurred does not mean something was there and blanked out.

Well, without a proven source stepping forward for this picture it appears we are going to have to leave the verdict of authenticity and "undetermined"

I do think those splotches and blurs look suspicious, but to truly rule this a fake we would have to find an older version of this picture online with a different message on the sign.

Someday, the people in this photo are going to see it online.

All we can do for now is just let people know that we do not have full confidence in this picture and that it's authenticity is in doubt.

It's real and so is it's message.

On another forum a blogger who is a professional checked this picture out to see if it was photo-shopped by blowing it up and checking pixels and it is a genuine picture. Whether it was taken in Arizona or not is irrelevant. It is still a reflection of what we are dealing with.

Which splotches and blurs do you think look suspicious? The ones that I saw make it seem authentic.

Here are two things to look at and consider.

    Actual size and increased 500%
I cut this from the sky and added text, however, notice the halo around the corner of the Times Building and the adjacent tree, which I did not tamper with.

I cut this section off the ground near the sign and increased the size by 500%. You get the same halo and blurred looking areas as you do with the sign.

I took a section of the sign and increased it 500%

Don't have much more I can add to this debate. Fake? Maybe, maybe not. The lettering looks written by the same hand and unlike my letters it does not look like a font.

    dok,
I wish you would reproduce the effects you put on the above on the images I made or increased and see, if you get a similar effect.
